May be a newbie question about but will ask anyway as search do not give a meaningful answer.
It seems but for both and it happens so that often lock files hang/stay in profile after normal restart or shutdown. As result I gent this error message that e. g. Firefox is running while I just powered pc on and logged in.
Proflles located outside of home dir, permissions in flatseal are given for these directories. But still having that issue.

It's fun that people come up with truly clever little hacks like the udm14 trick for Google search and find ways to integrate it into their setups, but I can't help but feel that it has the same vibe as those allegedly heart-warming news stories where a kid runs a lemonade stand to raise money to pay off their classmates' school lunch debt or their Mom's medical bills. Like, that's nice but why the hell are we even in this situation in the first place?

If they forced by corporate policy, it is time to pack suitcase and run to company which do not enforce "only-windows" policy.
After all, who said inventions always happen sitting at desk stared into a screen?

Just a #programming #rant of a #newbie
It is sorta depressing when I was trying to do very simple thing in #python - encode raw bytes sequence into emoji with #base1024, to see whether it would be shorter than base64, but I can't install related packages such baseEmoji. This package gives obscure error when started while other similar packages even can't be installed as it return an error.
May be this is some punishement for being on windows 10? But errors I see don't look platform-specific.

@mborus Thanks a lot for this very informative answer!. Other packages I tried just fail at installation with obscure (for me) errors. This one at least can be installed, yet with own problem being unusable with this error. i just asked search engine (Kagi) for "how to encode bytes to emoji in python". May be I had to use specialized search tool such as pyPI instead from start, which allows to find not so ancient packages.
I am newbie to Python, so prefer to NOT edit packages written by others.

The challenge with a federated DeviantArt platform will be payments, if they can offload that to a 3rd party by allowing users to add links to the store, it could work IMO

Otherwise, each instance would have to host their own Stripe payments account, and other complexities

Not to mention, giving Apple/Google Play 30% of the cut

In @pixelfed, we're handling this by allowing users to add links to specific items that redirect to 3rd party platforms

@dansup Sounds like some federated fiat (micro?)-payments standard is necessary, so often I see contexts where some payments are mentioned regarding ways to support creators, backup plan for indie games authors if MS will buy Valve...
It should be simple as possible and federated. E.g. person adds account to instance, that gives them storefront, and payments processed via local bank payments API's (called by instance). As soon enough for local operator limit payments collected, do local withdraw

@pluralistic Well, it more and more looks like covert push to make access to internet services authorized by government id. Coming EU regulation about Digital ID and related wallets very handy. So in few years we first will have a choice between captcha torture and ID verification, and few years later, only ID verification will be left as an option.
Complete deanon of everyone and wiping even illusion of privacy away.
BTW: have you an adblocker/anti-tracker extension installed?

The bald eagle could have easily gone extinct. But we did all sorts of "woke" things protecting it legally, ran conservation and study programs, banned DDT (that was good for other reasons too) and in 2007 they were removed from the endangered species list.

Likewise pine forests could be dead from acid rain.

The ozone could have a huge hole.

We CAN take care of nature when we want to. And the successes have been worth it.

I feel like we forget this, you know?

A scary moment in the Ukraine war has been captured by a helmet camera. As Russia sent new troops over the northern border into the Kharkiv Oblast recently, a small platoon were the first to hear a large number of enemy troops approaching their foxhole.

As the battle rages, they try to fire back using a german MG3 machine gun, but it jams as more and more Russians are approaching, leaving them only with small arms fire.

@luckytran At peak of restrictions a curfew has been introduced in Republic of Georgia. As it has been done at exact moment when political protests started to gain traction, many people here are sure that all these restrictions have been introduced just to suppress protests against falsifications at elections.
In Russia opposition events still forbidden under "covid restrictions" sauce while pro-putin events allowed.
These are examples of why many people doubt these restrictions were necessary.

Over and over AI is being deployed as a way to avoid the high cost of human mental labor.

You'd rather have a bank of servers huffing clouds of carbon into the air than just paying some people to solve the design problem.

I know hiring programmers to work on UI isn't glamorous, and the work is slow, the results aren't flashy, but we just can't keep on skipping this step or wishing that some cocktail-shaker full of matrices and stolen data will paper over the issue.

@pluralistic Sadly, these harms coming from "dophamine loops" (when people get bored just by not scrolling their "social network feeds", or when they "feel lonely and bored" when encounter some social media when there is no such thing as that "for you" or other algorithmic feed - this exists.
Impact of disinformation on election is real. Even if it is one-time effect as happened in 2016.
The "you are product" is not a hyperbole, yet it is not so strong as social media companies represent it.

It reminds me how Google removed the apps created by Navalny team for the so called "Smart Voting" (idea was to vote en masse to some 'most viable" candidate from any other party or even for a spoiler candidate but not for putin or his "United Russia" party. Ruzzian oil production/processing and export will be completely stopped, then it will cause the spike of oil prices and it will be used by US corps to jump prices of gasoline at pump, at US gas stations, and this will help Trump to win, and in this case US will stop any help it provides now.

    @GottaLaff Reasonable. From what I know, main promise of Netanyahu was like "I will give you safety if you will vote for me!". This was meaningful in context of fortress-under-siege context of Israel. But after Hamas attack at 7 October (Putin birthday!) this promise broken. I seen some accounts in internet suspecting that the attack has been allowed by Netanyahu to happen, to distract people from protests against judicial system "reform" (read "making courts docile to Netanyahu").

    Make use of #Lists, and when you follow someone make a habit of adding them to a list right then.

    It's quick and easy:

    • Set up at least three or four lists. You can number them to arrange the list display order.
    • After you hit FOLLOW, click the three vertical dots and choose "Add or Remove from lists". This will bring up your lists and you can click to add the follow to one or more lists.

    They will make your #Fediverse life so much better.
