It's fun that people come up with truly clever little hacks like the udm14 trick for Google search and find ways to integrate it into their setups, but I can't help but feel that it has the same vibe as those allegedly heart-warming news stories where a kid runs a lemonade stand to raise money to pay off their classmates' school lunch debt or their Mom's medical bills. Like, that's nice but why the hell are we even in this situation in the first place?
Microsoft Recall and AI training is the largest theft of human innovation in tech history.
When someone invents something or develops something, the first thing that happens is the inventor or developer types about it. To record a patent. To seek funding. To share news with a friend.
Recall will get access to early prototypes or concepts before anyone else.
My hard disk isn't taking screenshots and giving it to 3rd parties involuntarily or going out of its way to create insecure devices. It also impacts what you print.
If we are indeed "at the top of a slippery slope and this will change", then what is it about Recall, that Microsoft would need you to run it to help itself to your data? The Windows OS has full access to your hard disk as it is.
And yes they could take the data at any time and many have already voluntarily moved the data into their cloud. I'm not sure what their privacy policy says they can do with your data.
I learned 25 years ago not to trust Microsoft. I was working as a partner on Windows 2000.
There's no requirement to heed my advice or even believe it. Everyone is their own risk manager.
@sibrosan I said we were at the top of a slippery slope. And that I didn't know their privacy policy. Enshittification is real - why wouldn't it apply to recall? Now consider that Microsoft has enshittified more than one product in their past - what about if it happens here?
But many people don't want to discuss climate change as the world burns so why consider how badly this can go?
@Npars01 Do inventors use windows these days?
If they forced by corporate policy, it is time to pack suitcase and run to company which do not enforce "only-windows" policy.
After all, who said inventions always happen sitting at desk stared into a screen?
Also, experience of Soviet dissidents how to avoid total surveillance IRL would be handy, it seems.
