Hooray! The Western kingbirds are back (and sporting some wonderful spring looks)! And they seem to have brought the sunshine with them!

Photo of the same brown, yellow, and grey kingbird taken from slightly below the same branch so e is now outlined only by the bright blue sky, a few companion branches of the same mustardy-lichen patched mahogany rising around like a dry bouquet. The sunny kingbird's body is still facing to our right, but eir face now seems to look down at us. Eir head is just slightly cocked with curiosity, and from this angle the windblown fluff of eir grey pate looks wild and wonderful, like a tiny powderpuff of fine, soft dust. Looking at us under this fuzzy cap makes eir face look narrow--the punk eye makeup a firm strip across the eyes, boldly sketching a shadow over the bridge of the concentrated point of eir dark bill. It is somehow simultaneously a very cheerful, silly, and beautiful-looking bird.
