Strange, isn't it, that the values of real people — the things most of us truly care about — are not reflected at ALL in the values of our hegemonic capitalist consumerist culture...
@breadandcircuses our economy devalues all the care- care for kids, each other, elders, the sick, the infirm, the garden, the land, the sea, the animals, the planet. People who value money most reinforce the message that caring doesn’t matter- until they mess up their knee or have a stroke or their favorite beach is covered in oil soaked carcasses.😓
@breadandcircuses “Man’s greatest wealth is to live on little with contented mind; for little is never lacking.” ~ Lucretius, On the Nature of Things (De Rerum Natura)
@breadandcircuses You're considered a 'slacker' and bum if you pursue any of them while you're of working age. Once you're retired, it's fine.
That has to change.
@breadandcircuses As what was once a young man, I'd want to preface all of these with a spot of adrenaline. Climbing, skiing, motorcycling, out at night for gigs. It fits with, "time for fun and play" but it usually requires having some gear which can be expensive. I don't think it's classically consumerist but it's borderline.
@breadandcircuses didn't amazon start as a bookstore?
I would say that these values are super common, also in capitalist society. Look at TV ads - they will have most of these.

Today I parked my car and got out.. while at the same time, a guy emerged from the next car over, whistling a tune to himself. I thought: that’s what it’s all about.
@breadandcircuses They commodify whatever they can. They sell you sleep aids, caffeine, consumer choice, processed meals, e-books, bots to chat with, videos of what they can't directly provide, and of course, the "free" speech of others to cure you of the desire to listen.
@breadandcircuses These can not (or only indirectly through time and security) be bought with money, that's probably why a capitalist mindset is not interested in them.
@breadandcircuses Thx for pointing out these normal things that a normal person or a normal family should do. But I am wondering how many of these are being done given the stress and anxiety we all have. 🤔
@breadandcircuses Like this pic.
I never was able to take a day nap, even when had a formal opportunity. At children camp I usually read some book (paper book!) at that time.
Not fan of long walk because of my personality traits, as I prefer other activities over being outside.
I can have a good conversation with my wife or here at Fediverse.
Good night sleep seems to be undoable thing for me, even when I established some stable "regime" with alarm clock and stopped to rotate around the clock...
@breadandcircuses because before you can do all these things you have to work for the daily needs. Not cooking because it belongs to the daily work (that only a very few people do freely every day).
