Let's say that's true.

I'm not a believer, but let's say this guy is right. Eventually, we die and then we stand in front of this guy's god and have to justify our existence and then face that god's judgement.

Where does THIS guy come in?

What's his stake in what happens to me? I mean, he sure as hell doesn't like me, or wouldn't if he knew me. So what does he care? Does he get Holy Joe Salvation Credits for warning me? Can he cash them in for upgraded Platinum heaven? The fuck does he care?

@stonekettle what's gonna be hella funny is when Jesus is sitting on his throne next to his husband John and they're both listening to music played on a harp by David and his husband Jonathan.

The homophobia these clowns find in their holy scriptures is rooted in bad 19th century translations of the original ancient texts.

UPDATE: NY Governor Kathy Hochul said on CNN last night that she is considering a ban on masks.

This is absolutely shameful! New York has suffered so much from COVID, and COVID is not over. We should be normalizing and depoliticizing masks, not banning them.

    @luckytran you can bet the NYPD, FOP, PBA etc are behind this.

    The worst part is the police have freakishly disproportionately been killed by COVID and they have the audacity to hate masks AND count COVID deaths as line of duty deaths.

    (To be clear, I'm making an educated guess here but I'm not basing the claim that LEOs are behind this right now on direct evidence.)

    So this is making the rounds on , trying to paint democracy as the cause of fascism. Does anyone know the source and origin of this clip or who the speaker is? Dan somebody?

    video/mp4

    philip_cardella ,
    @philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

    @DemocracyMattersALot I'm not recalling his name but he's a Bircher and spouting typical Bircher fascist friendly bullshit.

    Not all Birchers were fascist but pretty much all Birchers preferred fascism to their boogie man, communism, which fascists like Henry Ford, Father Coughlin, Charles Lindbergh and Adolf Hitler called a Jewish plot a generation before him.

    This evil jackass comes from post wwii illiberalism fueled by the Red Scare. The video is, I'm guessing, from that period.

    philip_cardella ,
    @philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

    @DemocracyMattersALot The Birchers were known for being "crackpots". They tried to have Eisenhower and Earl Warren impeached.

    The issue of course is the Nazis, the Italian fascists, Vichy French, Francosl's fascists, etc were all probably crack pots too (as was Stalin on the other side of the spectrum). Doesn't make them less dangerous.

    philip_cardella ,

    @DemocracyMattersALot Matthew Dallek' excellent book Birchers: How the John Birch Society Radicalized the American Right mentions him in four times in the index. Pretty spread out.

    You have to admire in this respect: what he says is a perfect fit for the dumbest person in the room.

    Take this random quote:

    https://thehill.com/policy/technology/4717755-trump-says-remaining-bitcoin-must-be-made-in-us/damp/

    "Trump says remaining must be made in US"

    Ignore that Bitcoin is an energy wasting grift, ignore the wrongness on technical or legal merits.

    The stupidest dingbat's brain lights up like a Christmas tree when hearing it: "That's it! I love it!"

    You can't fake this level of perfect stupidity no matter how hard you tried.

    philip_cardella ,
    @philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

    @benroyce but there's also the part about how there's just no possibility he decided to talk about Bitcoin now on his own.

    Somebody is paying him to talk about it.

    philip_cardella ,
    @philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

    @benroyce no doubt. Whoever put him up to it was either as stupid as he his and hoping to benefit from the ponziesque scheme that is Bitcoin or is simply a con artist using a dupe to benefit from the ponziesque scheme that is Bitcoin.

    There's simply no way an honest business would want Trump talking about their product.

    They may want him to be President but there's no way they can expect him to understand what their product or what the pitch for their product is.

    philip_cardella ,
    @philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

    @benroyce @humanhorseshoes it is an artform, indeed. 🤣

    I firmly believe in holding individuals to account for their own actions, which is part of the reason I reject the idea that this is a cult. Cultists, not the leaders but the bulk, are victims. I don't like thinking of MAGA violence and hate as coming from the brainwashed. I think it's worse than that.

    That said, I do think there's a lot of evidence that when run of the mill MAGAs actually hear him speak they're turned off.

    philip_cardella ,
    @philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

    @benroyce @humanhorseshoes there's lots of videos of MAGAs streaming out of his rallies while he's talking.

    Is it all of them? No. Are there MAGAs that go to ALL of his rallies? Yes, absolutely.

    But I think we need to realize that the bulk of his voters don't actually know he's spewing this sort of madness.

    Why don't they? Is the big question for me. I have guesses and a lot of it I do blame on the Russian government, as well as Saudi, Iranian, North Korean and other state actors.

    philip_cardella ,
    @philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

    @benroyce @humanhorseshoes but it's more than just hostile state actors. I think we need to recognize that Putin has exactly one skill and that's mind fucking populations. He was trained to do that. That's his only skill imo.

    But there's other things going on too. Someone said the corporate media and their oligarchs. No doubt that's true.

    What else?

    Human nature?

    Covid rotting brains?

    philip_cardella ,
    @philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

    @benroyce @humanhorseshoes to me, post 2020, it's clearly fascism. In that sense, it's been studied, which is why I feel so comfortable saying it's fascism despite fascism being an over used term.

    That said, I also think it's a new iteration of fascism that places less emphasis on nationalism and more on a transnational identity (eg white, Christian). In the US and much of Europe this is White Christian "Nationalism." But nationalism in that context has no nation state, the way 20c fascism did.

    philip_cardella ,
    @philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

    @benroyce @humanhorseshoes as such, we need to study is more. Absolutely. And it's more complicated than just plain fascism (or neofascism, which I take to mean transnational fascism), of course.

    The reality is Mussolini and Hitler were laughed off too. I'm not sure about other interwar fascists like Franco. But certainly the most famous fascists were clowns and con men.

    philip_cardella ,
    @philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

    @benroyce @DemocritusDiscoBall @Stoneycase @humanhorseshoes right? I didn't understand why people liked him when I read about him. Then I watched a live news conference and he had the press eating out of his hands. He was brilliant with words and at a podium.

    He was a monster with his foreign policy.

    The North Carolina mask ban hasn’t been entered into law yet & already there’s a story of a woman being intentionally coughed on & harassed.

    The man demanded she remove her mask, called her a Liberal and himself a Conservative and tried to tell her masks were illegal in public places. She explained she had stage 4 cancer and was immune compromise and he responded by purposefully coughing on her.

    This is disgusting behaviour but make now mistake - lawmakers are effectively encouraging this type of harassment. Banning medical masks emboldens those who seek to harm high risk and disabled individuals. We are already seeing it.

    It’s also fascinating that her attacker felt the need to call out his political affiliation (as well as make an assumption on hers).

    I need people to understand masks aren’t political. Covid isn’t political. A virus is incapable of caring what side of the aisle you’re on - and a mask is a medical device to protect the health of the wearer (and others). This politicization of masks is mainly being driven by people who are angry about mandates at the height of the Covid pandemic - they consider the months they had to mask as the most egregious violation of their freedoms imaginable - and now they’re lashing out at those who remind them of that time in their lives. They don’t want to see masks (or disabled people) ever again.

    Please keep pushing back. Speak out. Get loud. Let lawmakers know you won’t stand for bills that violate a person’s right to protect themselves and their health. The harassment will only get worse from here and we need to call out bad behaviour whenever it happens - and support each other through these difficult times.

    @TonyStark @imstilljeremy @MariaHill absolutely. I'm going to be speaking at my dad's funeral next month and there's going to be a lot of people there I cut out of my life because of their religious beliefs. Probably at least 40 I haven't spoken to since 2020.

    Believe me, if you want to shit on the Catholic Church for it's crimes against humanity I'm all for it. I'm just not ok with blaming all Catholics for it.

    @imstilljeremy @TonyStark @MariaHill friend, this is on a public channel. I'm saying it to the universe.

    I feel like we're on the same page, honestly. I hope we are.

    I tend to think of myself as a critical theorist so I'm 100% for analyzing systems and their flaws and looking at leadership roles in that.

    @philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

    @TonyStark @imstilljeremy @MariaHill yeah. I mean both Piuses can kiss my ass and anyone who disagrees with that can too.

    Hagiography is evil for this reason. Though I'm a Christian (mostly ashamed of my fellow Christians) I'm absolutely personally against the deification of anyone (ok, I deify Jesus but that's not a hill I'm willing to die on anymore).

    No one deserves worship. Period.
