I don't understand why there is a file size limit (15MB) when posting to @pixelfed. Aren't the images getting compressed anyway? Last time I checked, images there are displayed at a little over a megapixel and are just a few hundred kilobytes. Is the full resolution image taking up space on a server somewhere?

Will @loops have this limit? And if not, why should Pixelfed?

Same question for Mastodon, which has a 16MB limit for images.

@dansup @Gargron

422 Validation failed: File must be less than 16 MB, File file size must be less than 16 MB

FediTips ,
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

@mntyfrsh @pixelfed

I'm guessing the limit is to prevent the server being overwhelmed with huge files. Even though it's compressed on the server, it at least has to store the original file while it is in the queue for compression.

The limit is set by the server, I don't run a Pixelfed server though so I don't know how easy it is for admins to access it.

I had a look at the githubs for Pixelfed and Mastodon and couldn't find a direct answer to whether the original file is stored permanently.

This is part of the issue with third party implementations of this.

It might look like a quote in your client, but for someone on the standard Mastodon web interface it just looks like a link to a post.

FediTips , (edited ) to random
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

Have you ever wondered about quoting posts on Mastodon? Is it possible? If not, why not? Will it ever be possible? How come some people seem to be able to quote posts already?

Hopefully your questions are answered in this article:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/why-cant-i-quote-other-posts-in-mastodon

FediTips OP ,
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

@nlupo

Yup, I've tried to mention this in the article.

A number of third party apps do have an unofficial "quote" feature but technically they are just copy-pasting into a new post and linking to the source of the copy-pasting. If they're viewed within the same app it looks like quoting, but if they're viewed elsewhere it just looks like copy-pasting.

@adrianmorales

You can't delete replies to your post, but if someone has posted something that breaks the rules on your server you can report it. You can also mute or block the account that made the reply.

There isn't an option to disallow replies, but this has been a very very popular suggestion (it's currently third most supported suggestion on Mastodon). If you're comfortable using github you can give a thumbs up at https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/8565

FediTips OP ,
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

@adrianmorales

A workaround to restricting replies is to restrict post visibility, to use followers-only or mentions-only (or on some servers local-only):

https://fedi.tips/who-can-see-my-posts-in-mastodon-how-do-i-send-dms-in-mastodon/

It doesn't do the same thing as disallowing replies, but it does at least somewhat limit the potential for trolls etc.

Apologies for the post earlier today about how to see text-only posts on Pixelfed. Due to updates to Pixelfed's software, the info I posted on it was out of date. There seems to be no useful way to change the info as the feature itself seems to be absent/undergoing maintenance.

Really sorry, will try to check things more carefully on future posts. 😳

Thanks to the people who pointed the mistakes out, really useful feedback 👍

FediTips OP ,
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

@Rusty

Thanks 😁

I normally just try to step through whatever it is that the user has to do, so I can try to see where they might get tripped up by the interface and need advice.

That's how I wrote the original version of the article about Pixelfed, but I didn't repeat the step-through when publishing the post today, and ended up with egg on face 🍳

Random question: can Mastodon mute words in images?

FediTips ,
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

@theresmiling @tptigger

You can filter posts based on their text content, including text in the image descriptions.

However, if the person posting the image hasn't added an image description then the filter won't work on it.

By the way, there's more about using filters on Mastodon here:

    The main strength of the Fediverse is that it is spread out on many independent servers. It is a strength because it gives grassroots communities direct control and ownership of the network, without relying on tech companies.

    However, this structure can also make it more difficult to find stuff or see complete versions of profiles and threads.

    There is more info about why the Fediverse works like this (and how problems can be solved/mitigated) at:

    ➡️ https://fedi.tips/why-arent-all-mastodon-and-fediverse-posts-and-accounts-automatically-visible-from-all-servers

    FediTips OP ,

    Yes, agreed. The Fediverse is a lot more organic and closer to how real world communities function.

    Mentions (also known as @-ing) means when you type @ and then an account, which causes a link to the account's profile to appear in your post.

    Mentioning an account also generates a notification for the owner of the account, and in some post visibility modes it also allows the mentioned account to be able to see your post. Mentions can be handy to let other people know exactly who you are talking about.

    You can find out all about mentions on Mastodon at:

    If you have to crosspost professionally on Mastodon and Twitter/X, there are paid professional third party services that allow this at https://publer.io and https://buffer.com/mastodon

    Musk shut down Twitter's free API so all free third party crossposting services closed down. If you use a paid service, bear in mind a portion of your subscription will go to Musk.

    Anyway, @FediTips - is there to automatically have the toots translated to English without having to click the "translate" functionality all the time?

    FediTips ,
    @FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

    @ryan2one3

    No, because it costs the server owner money to run the translate feature. That's also why the translate button isn't available on every server, or may disappear if the server's budget runs out.

    If you want everything translated, there may be third party browser extensions that do this, but they will usually pay for the translation by selling user data. (That's how Google Translate pays for itself for example.)

    Mastodon doesn't sell user data, so the admin pays for translations.

    The official Mastodon apps still do not indicate if an account has transferred to a new server. (The website, web app and third party apps do indicate this correctly.)

    This means people using Mastodon through the official apps may attempt to follow the old accounts and just get an error message, without knowing why.

    If you're comfortable using Github, you can vote for this to be fixed by giving thumbs up at these issues:

    Android App

    @squarenessie

    It's because the web app has been around since 2016. The third party apps have been around for many years too. They're mature and full of features.

    The official app store apps were only introduced in 2022 and are still missing lots of features. They were mainly released as new people were so used to Twitter, Facebook etc being so oriented around official app store apps, and assumed that was the only way to sign up.

    Have you transferred your account to another server but some followers seem to remain behind? You can usually get most of the ones that remained on the old account by repeating the transfer process after 30 days.

    The followers that are already transferred will remain on your new account, but by repeating the process you might get some of the remaining followers transferred across too.

    There's a complete guide to repeating transfers on the transfer guide:

    FediTips OP , (edited )
    @FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

    p.s. To get a better idea of why followers don't always transfer, I went through the remaining 260 followers (out of 4K) that were still following the old FediVideo account after transfers.

    255 of them were either:
    -on servers that didn't exist, or...
    -accounts that didn't exist, or...
    -their server was running unusual software which wasn't compatible with transfers, or...
    -their server seemed broken in some way.

    The vast majority of this 255 were simply accounts from now-deleted servers.

    As well as replies, are three ways to interact with a post on Mastodon:

    ⭐ Favouriting - This lets the post's creator know you enjoyed their post. It's the equivalent of a like.

    🔁 Boosting - This shares the post with everyone who follows you, and adds the post to your profile's timeline. It's the equivalent of a re-tweet.

    🔖 Bookmarks - This adds the post to your private bookmarks list, without telling anyone you've done this.

    More info including how to browse them:

    @rita

    The bookmarks built into Mastodon are fairly simple, there are no folders or anything like that.. I'm not sure what to suggest other than browser bookmarks?

    However, there are search operators you can use to search within your bookmarks and favourites. If you include "in:library" in a search, this will search amongst all the posts you have interacted with including bookmarks and favourites. FediTips ,
    @FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

    @wertercatt @Naureckas

    Yeah! For some weird reason this doesn't happen to my site at all, which is particularly weird as my account distributes to a lot of servers.

    It seems to be because my site's hosting company uses a caching system which evens out the traffic spikes on all its sites.

    (By the way if a site does crash it usually doesn't last long, a few minutes at the time of publishing the post, but it is annoying.)

    @Naureckas

    Think I just answered in replying to someone else in this thread, but in case anyone can't see that, the workaround seems to be asking your hosting company to have a caching system switched on for your site.

    FediTips ,
    @FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

    @Naureckas @wertercatt

    I'm not sure, and I'm not a SysAdmin so I don't know the technical details, but I guess that's how the cache would work? So people aren't all fetching it from the same place at once?

    (By the way, my website is hosted separately from my Fediverse server, by a totally different company, so in theory my posts should be crashing my website just like anyone else's site.)

    Due to the way the Fediverse works, it's a good idea to have at least some followers (even a handful!) before you post interesting content. If you post stuff when you have literally zero followers, that content will usually not be visible outside your server, even if people follow you later.

    Are Mastodon users really happy with thread behavior? So, for example, this post had a lot of replies, but even if you look at it on the original instance you can't see any of them. You can see my reply to the post on my server, but it is no longer connected to the original post. So it is often impossible to read old threads (& of course even to see all replies on a current one).
