The latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Household Pulse Survey, taken between March 5 and April 1, 2024, estimated that nearly 7% of the adult population — more than 18 million people — currently have long COVID. Data from other countries also suggest that millions have been living with long COVID for years now, and hundreds of thousands have seen their day-to-day activities significantly affected. There is an urgent need for more funding, long COVID clinicians, multidisciplinary clinics, and education for non–long COVID physicians and specialists, doctors said. Instead, funding remains limited, clinics are closing, wait times are "horrendously long," patients are left in limbo, and physicians are burning out.

    In February 2021, the National Institutes of Health launched a new $1 billion initiative to study Long Covid, a chronic disease that has changed the lives of millions of Americans. Then-NIH director Francis Collins laid out the program’s goals in a blog post: find the biological causes of Long Covid, determine how many people are impacted, and identify treatments. Three years later, the NIH initiative, called RECOVER, has not met these goals, according to a detailed review of budget and planning documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act and shared with Long Covid experts. RECOVER’s research into Long Covid’s underlying biology has lagged behind that of privately-funded scientists; it has failed to provide reliable estimates of how many people have Long Covid; and clinical trials, launched last summer, garnered extensive criticism for failing to test promising treatments. As RECOVER approaches the end of its initial $1.15 billion, four-year funding allocation, people in the Long Covid community are questioning whether future funding — including an additional $515 million allocated this year — would help the initiative turn around or would lead to more slow, minimal progress. Many researchers and clinicians outside the program and people with Long Covid have lost faith in RECOVER’s ability to deliver meaningful answers about this complex disease. Some have lost faith in the NIH entirely.

    I'm getting offline early today.

    I loved today's good news, all of it. I love it openly and freely. I'm more than aware of any possible negatives and simply don't care at the moment.

    There's plenty of time for that tomorrow, but today was a good day. Try enjoying it, you'd be amazed at how reinvigorating it can be.

    Thanks for the reminder!

    I tuned in and was happy to hear Dr. Harkins talking about post-exertional malaise and Dr. Al-ly talking about post viral ME/CFS. Both of these have been very low priority for so many years, not even taught in med school. ME/CFS has been ignored by all but a few dedicated researchers.

    But it's much harder to ignore these things now that the pandemic has triggered so many new cases of disabling chronic illness!
