A streak of record-setting that began last summer has now persisted for an entire year across the globe, researchers announced Wed, pushing closer to a dangerous threshold that the ’s nations had pledged not to cross.

What's better for the environment: A paper book, or an e-reader? NPR spoke to industry experts about the rise of digital reading, how the publishing industry is reducing waste, and whether using a fossil-fuel-derived plastic e-reader is a better option than a paper book. The short answer, according to professor Mike Berners-Lee (yes, he is his brother): It depends.

@CultureDesk @bookstodon At least with a proper book you can be pretty sure it's not been 'censored', especially if you find one as close to first publishing date as possible. Also, they can be passed round easily to others and in hard times, trashy novels can be used to insulate walls and floors and pages used to light stoves etc.

As Heather Cox Richardson reports, the Supreme Court just signed off on a South Carolina congressional map that dilutes Black votes by gerrymandering.

And Samuel Alito wrote the majority opinion. She writes,

"Almost exactly 70 years after the Supreme Court unanimously decided Brown v. Board, it appears that the framed timbers designed to reverse the expansion of minority rights are falling into place."

@RolloTreadway @purplepadma I've gone through long periods in my life of having traumatic dreams where I shouted out so much I actually woke myself and my lovely neighbour asked me if I was ok the next day. As I keep a diary I'm able to correlate these periods with very stressful daytime situations over which I had little or no control. Part of having little or no control though was because I couldn't "let go" and back off, step away and put myself first. I'm still working on that!

    Been thinking.

I would give anything to never have any dreams again. If there was some pill that could wipe away all dreams, whilst still allowing me to have a good sleep (yes, I know this isn't really possible), I would be first in the queue. My life would be improved so much.

It's not just the bad dreams and the trauma dreams (though there are far too many of those), also the exhausting ones, and the nicer ones too that just leave me feeling devastated on waking up back in my rubbish life.

And I was wondering: does anyone else get this? I don't mean, does anyone else get problematic dreams because everyone does sometimes.

I mean, does anyone else find that their regular dreaming is so impactful that it has a measurable disabling effect and life would be massively improved with zero dreams?

@RolloTreadway During several very stressful periods in my life I've had really awful dreams, where I've been shouting out or crying and woken myself up, or my neighbour has asked me if I'm ok the next day. I get that it's the mind trying to deal with stuff in it's own way and am thankful that most of the content of awful dreams are largely forgotten either straight away or a short time afterwards. They reminded me though that I really had to make an effort to deal with the stresses somehow, which I mostly did in the end.

Through YT, for the past 15 years, the world has basically entrusted Google to be the custodian of pretty much our entire global video archive.

There's countless hours of archived footage — news reports, political speeches, historical events, documentaries, indie films, academic lectures, conference presentations, rare recordings, concert footage, obscure music — where the best or only copy is now held by Google through YouTube.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I’ll state it anyway.

Those of us fortunate enough to have access to washing machines and dryers should use them as little as possible.

Try to wear your clothing — shirts, trousers, socks — more than once, ideally several times, before washing them again. That will save water, save energy, cause less pollution, and make your clothing last longer.

@breadandcircuses I have one of those old-fashioned aerial clothes dryers up on the landing...stuff's dry in about 24hrs or so. I save all my laundry til I have a full load and use those weird little balls with balls inside jobbies. I only use liquid for woollens and sheets/towels/teatowels. I save my washing up for about 3 days and it takes about 15 litres to do as I rinse so as not to have to hand-dry them with a teatowel. I have solar panels and because my usage is relatively low, I've run a cable next door so's my lovely neighbour can do her washing for free.

It’s amazing how many replies are from those who think they know exactly how everything will turn out for Trump, who know exactly what will happen when he appeals, who can foresee the future, who know, well, exactly everything there is to know about everything, and then get angry if someone else differs.

I rarely, if ever, do speculation, a personal rule.

    Glad I got offline early

@GottaLaff Most amateur political commentators on here fall into that category...they've got their crystal balls and 'know' with utter certainty what's going to happen...yeh, right!

Another worrisome tipping point: accelerating ice melt in Greenland potentially disrupting vital ocean currents...

The Greenland ice cap is losing an average of 30 million tonnes of ice per hour due to the climate crisis, a study has revealed, which is 20% more than was previously thought.

Some scientists are concerned that this additional source of freshwater pouring into the north Atlantic might mean that a collapse of ocean currents called the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc) is closer to being triggered, with severe consequences for humanity.

The Amoc was already known to be at its weakest in 1,600 years, and in 2021 researchers spotted warning signs of a tipping point. A recent study suggested the collapse could happen as soon as 2025 in the worst-case scenario.

A significant part of the Greenland ice sheet itself is also thought by scientists to be close to a tipping point of irreversible melting, with ice equivalent to 1-2 metres of sea level rise probably already expected.

The scientists said: “There is some concern that any small source of freshwater may serve as a tipping point that could trigger a full-scale collapse of the Amoc, disrupting global weather patterns, ecosystems and global food security. But freshwater from the glacier retreat of Greenland is not included in oceanographic models at present.”

@breadandcircuses Fresh water floats on saltier water and therefore when super-cooled at the Arctic forms ice instead of sinking and maintaining AMOC. I predict attempts at geo-engineering involving massive dumping of salt into the far northern parts of the Atlantic to counter this...correction...to TRY and counter this.

    So now I'm getting:

How DARE you not want to talk about something here? You're a political commentator! You're required to talk about what I want to talk about!

Not if it results in troll swarms I don't.

Not if I choose not to I don't.

    Not if I don't feel qualified to I don't.

Not if it brings out the worst in people I don't.

Nor do I demand that others discuss what I want to discuss.

    Kthxbye.

@GottaLaff You could just add "HA. HA. HA." to the end of your post there...to hammer home the point they're plainly not getting?
