What people seem not to be thinking about with Trump's choice of J.D. Vance as his running mate is that Vance became Catholic to great media fanfare in 2019.

The white Catholic vote is critical in the swing states that will determine who wins the White House.

The Catholic archbishop of Milwaukee, Listecki, gave the opening prayer at the Republican national convention.

The Supreme Court is controlled by a bloc of right-wing Catholics.

"A Catholic priest under criminal investigation for sexual misconduct with multiple women – and consequently prohibited from ministering in two states – has been charged with illegally possessing child abuse imagery depicting girls.

Vargas' report features a video showing Father Odiong preaching a homily in November 2023 in which he refers to members of the LGBTQ+ community as "monkeys and animals and chimpanzees."

As Vargas notes,

"He was able to build a loyal following in the US in large part by claiming he had a special understanding with the Virgin Mary through prayer. The charismatic clergyman would hold so-called healing masses…."

"Like many Supreme Court cases in recent years, the key to reading Cannon’s opinion is to refuse to engage with it as a piece of serious legal analysis.

Instead, it should be read as what it is: an expression of pure power, the kind that knows there’s no consequence for its misuse. That’s why Cannon can breezily dispose of decades of precedent about special counsel appointments: Who’s going to stop her?"

"She looked at the law and went 180 degrees from it to rule in Trump’s favor. She assessed the issue here in a way that no other court to consider the constitutionality of appointing a special counsel has. And although she wrote that her ruling applied only in this case, that’s not how precedent works."

"In any other country, we would recognize Cannon’s actions—dismissing a major criminal case against a presidential candidate on the first day of his party’s convention—to be part of an ongoing constitutional coup. Even more so if that judge had been placed on the court by the defendant after he had lost his re-election bid…."

"Judge Aileen Cannon is not smart enough to come up with the idea of ignoring controlling precedent to hold that special counsel Jack Smith’s appointment violates the Constitution. "Roberts has led the Supreme Court into an era in which precedent can selectively be ignored, eviscerated, or overruled when it gets in the way of conservatives’ goals. That, in turn, has led lower court judges to feel that they have been given power to do the same — predicting, in essence, the precedents that they believe the current court would ignore.

This is not how the law is to work."

@Godfrey642 I very much agree. Part of the terror is the discovery that so many of us simply do not intend to learn the hard lessons the 20th century should have taught us about how authoritarian turns inevitably end in violence, bloodshed, suffering for everyone. It's as if many of us are determined to put us (and themselves) though that learning experience all over again, because the siren call of authoritarianism and its invitation to stigmatize and hate vulnerabl communities is so compelling

Many of us have long been perfectly willing to cut off our noses to spite our faces, if that means showing "them" that they cannot have the goodies we take for granted as "ours." White Southerners shut down swimming pools, amusement parks, etc., and gutted public education, to show "them" that they cannot enjoy "our" things.
