FACT SHEET: President Biden Announces New Actions to Keep #Families Together
Since his first day in office, President #Biden has called on #Congress to secure our border & address our broken #immigration system. As Congressional #Republicans have continued to put partisan politics ahead of #NationalSecurity – twice voting against the toughest & fairest set of #reforms in decades.
President #Biden on Tues will announce sweeping new #protections for hundreds of thousands of #immigrants who have been living in the #UnitedStates illegally for years but are married to American #citizens.
#POTUS will detail the policy at the WH on Tues while marking the 12-yr anniversary of #DACA which protects people who came to the US as children from #deportation.
Under the #policy, #undocumented spouses of US citizens will be shielded from deportation, provided work permits & given a pathway to #citizenship. It could affect up to 500k undocumented spouses.
Marrying an American citizen generally provides a pathway to US citizenship. But people who crossed the southern border illegally — rather than arriving in the country w/a visa — must return to their home countries to complete the process for a green card.
The program #Biden is expected to announce on Tues is known as “parole in place,” which has been used in the past for other populations, like families of military. It gives unauthorized #immigrants in the #UnitedStates protection from #deportation for a period & access to a work permit.
“What the Biden admin is doing may well turn out to be the biggest news for common-sense #immigration#policy since the #DACA program in 2012 helped childhood arrivals stay,” said Mari Urbina, dir of Indivisible.
Just 3 staffers remain at the Observatory, who will either leave or find roles at #Stanford’s #Cyber#Policy Center, which is absorbing what remains of the program, acc/to 8 people familiar w/the developments.
The #ElectionIntegrity Partnership, a prominent consortium run by the Observatory & a University of Washington team to identify #ViralFalsehoods about #election procedures & outcomes in real time, has updated its webpage to say its work has concluded. #law#CyberSecurity#disinformation
It follows Harvard’s dismissal of #misinformation expert #JoanDonovan. A Dec whistleblower complaint alleged she used the university’s close & lucrative ties w/ #Facebook parent #Meta led the university to clamp down on her work, which was highly critical of the #socialmedia giant’s practices.
…At #NOAA, where a 2020 investigation found that agency leaders violated its #ScientificIntegrity policy after #Trump showed a doctored hurricane forecast map, stricter standards took effect in March. A similar #policy will soon be extended to the #Commerce Dept, including to the #political appointees whose #violations were detailed in the 2020 probe.
After the [#Trump hurricane Dorian incident,]… #NOAA updated their policy…said NOAA’s #ScientificIntegrity officer. The #policy includes guidelines on how #scientists should conduct themselves, & asks them to articulate their findings openly & clearly to the #public. It establishes that “credible allegations of #fabrication, #falsification, #plagiarism, & #interference w/or undue #influence on accurate public reporting of #science” can result in “personnel actions” & referral to the IG’s office.
'Georgia Is Our Laboratory': Inside Trump's Plan to Rig 2024
Team #Trump sees #Georgia as 'a road map' for putting Trump's heads-I-win-tails-you-lose philosophy of #elections into practice
The Peach State is unique—it's the sole battleground state in which the #Republican Party has total #control over the levers of #power: a trifecta in state #House, #Senate, & governorship
But ever since President #Biden's inauguration, #conservative activists & policymakers in #Georgia have tried to bypass #Raffensperger & worked diligently to turn Trump's heads-I-win-tails-you-lose philosophy of #elections into public #policy.
As #Trump has continued to lie that the #2020election was "stolen" & "rigged", Trump & his supporters have been making concrete, step-by-step progress in shaping electoral processes to his benefit.
Last wk, President #Biden announced a crackdown on migrants trying to cross the border. Responses from #immigrants’-rights groups, #CivilRights groups, & some Democratic politicians were instantaneous. California Sen Alex Padilla said the new #policy …“undermined American values & abandoned our nation’s obligations to provide people fleeing #persecution, #violence, & #authoritarianism w/an opportunity to seek refuge in the US.”
But at least one economist, who strongly favors liberal #immigration policies, was more sympathetic to the White House’s move. “The situation at the southern #border has been chaotic,” Giovanni Peri, who directs the Global Migration Center at the U , Davis, told me. “It has been hurting the case for immigration because people have only been talking about that, & not talking about all the migrants who have been coming here & working & boosting the #economy.”
Michael Clemens, an economist at George Mason University who is an expert on #immigration, said that some of the coverage of the new #Biden#policy, particularly online, had been #misleading. Under certain exceptions enumerated in the plan, at least 60k migrants—w/access to parole pending an #asylum or other court hearing—are likely to be lawfully admitted to the US each month, about 6X as many as under #Trump, Clemens said.
Nevertheless, he & Peri both agreed that there is an urgent need to accompany the new #policy w/more legal-entry options for immigrants who are trying to cross the southern border. “We can easily absorb these people, & the #economy needs them,” Peri said. Clemens also argued that expanding #legal channels is necessary to #secure the #border: “Just denying access is very likely to encourage more clandestine entry. It may be completely ineffective.”
It is irresponsible to obsess over Pres #Biden’s tendency to mangle a couple of words in a speech while #Trump is out there sounding detached from reality. Biden, who is old, at least makes sense. Trump, who also is old, rants like someone you’d cross the street to avoid.
Trucks? He’s actually [supposedly] talking about the transition to #Electricvehicles, which he has vowed to halt. That entire #hallucination is part of #Trump’s rationale for one of his major #policy positions. [policy via hallucination, girl bye]
…The White House press corps would be in wolf pack mode if #Biden were in the middle of a speech & suddenly veered into gibberish about boats & sharks.
“…when he gets to be president, not only is he gonna secure the #border, he’s going to #deport hundreds of thousands of people here illegally. And if you wanna shut down illegal #immigration, those coming need to see an outflow by the tens & hundreds of thousands. That will deter. The only #policy change that will work is to have #MassDeportations.”
A streak of record-setting #heat that began last summer has now persisted for an entire year across the globe, researchers announced Wed, pushing #Earth closer to a dangerous threshold that the #world’s nations had pledged not to cross.
Temperatures surpassed the 1.5°C #warming threshold over the past year, & scientists warn they will again soon.
#India's #solar capacity jumped by 9.5GW in 2024 Q1, partly due to Government policy:
"This increase is not merely a result of favorable market conditions but also a product of strategic #policy interventions and technological innovations. The Indian government's renewable energy policies have significantly lowered implementation and financing costs, enhancing the overall economics of solar projects."
