There’s a bit of a paradox for those of us committed to combatting authoritarianism in the U.S. The more extreme the Republican crime syndicate party becomes, the more daunting it can feel to resist and to work on GOTV for this fall. The rabid authoritarianism and white Christian nationalism can seem so power mad that it can seem like we must summon a huge amount of energy to defeat it. Simultaneously, it can seem so nuts that it is unbelievable that anybody would vote for it. 1/

The verdict may not matter to Trump's base, but I do think there is a group of people it matters to who are being overlooked: the people who were already likely to vote for Biden.

A Trump acquittal would have sapped trust in legal systems and government further. It would fueled apathy. Hopelessness and apathy can reelect Trump.

You are exactly correct about this and I probably didn't want to think about it but now that we got the right outcome..
I have a friend who has been right about Trump's ascendance since 2015. Even 2020's win didn't shake her sense of doom because it was so close and so weird. Yesterday's verdict really, really gave her hope. Onward! Everbody keep rowing!

    This happens every day now: New accounts are created to spread propaganda about the Ukraine war.

    I block them, and the next day, more accounts show up in my notifications with the same trivial replies "Ukraine is bad", “We should not fund Ukraine", "Zelenskyy is a nazi”, …

    I suspect the accounts are computer generated, as the contents posted to them is generic photos with no text.

I blocked what looked to me like an actual person spewing a lot of stuff I object to, there was certainly some anti Ukraine messaging although I can't quite recall why I did the block specifically. Anyway my thought in blocking not reporting was that this person was entitled to their lousy opinions, I just don't want to hear them. What would be a grounds for reporting?

    Holy hell. I never thought I'd be in agreement with Senator Tom Cotton. I think Ukraine should do as much damage to Russian oil production as they can now before the US gets the money and weapons flowing again. Maybe that's the play? Make that the clear trade off and maybe Putin will put out the bat signal to his "friends" in Congress to release the $$.     I'm a huge fan of the comedian @mariabamford (don't think she's on yet but she ought to be - she was a cool twitter follow). Anyway, she's been very open about her own fairly severe mental health issues and one of the things she says to her audience about suicidal ideation is "talk to someone, anyone". Call and talk to your dentist's receptionist. Anyone to make a connection with. It doesn't have to be a hotline. So good advice here @alice....

    It's as plain as the nose on your face. I was screaming at the tv as Jonathan Karl on ABC's Sunday show led with this Biden age horsesh*t; the same week that Trump gave Putin the green light to attack our allies. When Senator Coons suggested that the issue is driven by press coverage Karl looked like he'd just been slapped in the face. Like it was shocking and rude to imply that he is anything other than a fair arbiter. I stopped watching. They're going to click bait us to hell.

    Ants Canada (Mikey Bustos) is the largest "Ant YouTuber" and now and then someone finds out I like ants and says "oh you should watch Ants Canada." (which is kind of like suggesting that serious foodie "check out Iron Chef") -- If you go into the "online ant-keeping community" you'll find a surprising amount of antipathy for Bustos, is it jealousy? Serious professional disagreements? It always seemed odd to me but I think I know why this is happening. It's three main factors: 1/

    I agree. What's left of the GOP is absolutely zombified by FOXNews and other right wing media and social networks including think tanks, and all of those messaging nodes have willingly turned pro-fascist. We will have to bludgeon it out of them over several election cycles. So we've got to win '24. And perversely, because of who the GOP has become, the semi-normal Haley can be more easily beat than the spectacularly evil Trump.
