Independent Senator Lidia Thorpe has been ordered to remove a pro-Palestine “protest” sign from view during a senate hearing on Friday.

Ms Thorpe was attending the meeting by video conference from her office in Victoria when she was asked to remove a “protest sign”.

    Morning all. Bit pissed off, because of something I read yesterday - that some stupid percentage of people apparently want fewer non-clinical staff in the NHS, in relation to the usual election bullshit about 'efficiency savings'.

    I work for an ambulance service. Our ambulances see all kind of unpleasant things, so it's essential that they're kept clean.

    But without non-clinical staff, we have nobody working in Cleaning, so infections spread.

    And we can't have a plan to bring these infections under control, as we now have no Infection Control staff. What, you thought Infection Control was a clinical job? You probably thought everything was a clinical job, right? Guess what? Just because a role is in some way connected to medical things, doesn't mean it is classified as 'clinical'.

    Also, we don't have anything with which to clean and stop infections, because no non-clinical staff means no Procurement staff out there buying what's needed.

    Even if we could procure what we needed, how could we pay for it? We'll have nobody in Finance.

    Perhaps, okay, we can have Finance staff, but who's going to do that job if we can't pay them? Because we can't pay anyone, if we have no Payroll staff.

    And if we have someone doing Payroll, presumably they'll be using payroll software on the computer. Except, they can't do that, as we won't have any IT staff.

    This is a bad idea, right? Let's bring back Cleaning, bring Infection Control, bring back Procurement, bring back Finance, bring back Payroll, bring back, IT. Except... actually we can't do that either, because no non-clinical staff means no Recruitment team.

    Non-clinical support staff matter as much in the NHS as any other organisation. Without non-clinical support, there is no NHS.

    This has been a public service announcement on behalf of Support Staff Who Are Already Overworked And Underpaid As It Is, And We're Really Fucking Tired.

    @RolloTreadway It has obviously not been explained to them exactly what tasks non-clinical staff perform. If that information is left to the slash-and-burn party, they won't ever know.
    Without non-clinical staff, clinical staff can't do their jobs.
    I can see independent news headlines now "Ramping out of control as ambos have to clean vehicles between runs. More emergency vehicles off road, due to maintenance work piling up".

    I just started reading this article and in general ( since I just started reading) I like the language, their mindfulness, and participatory action research. I celebrate and thank the authors. We need more of this. Still, this made me laugh aloud ( with pain): “ To ensure that differences in learning and cognition were due to neurodiversity, both neurodivergent and neurotypical participants had to have no diagnosis of any mental health condition.”

    Does ‘Not being diagnosed’ really mean no PTSD, no anxiety( the kind of anxiety that can’t be used to motivate one’s self, the kind that is crippling so much that one only survives through), no depressive periods at least? Maybe it is, if one is diagnosed very early and lived in very supportive, welcoming environments. I hope it is.

    And ( not addressing this particular article but in general) what about people who are not officially diagnosed and who don’t even know they are neurodivergent yet? How are we going to or how can we reach them and make their voices heard?

    On June 21, 1877, the authorities hanged ten Irish miners in a single day in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Known as Black Thursday, or Day of the Rope, it was the second largest mass execution in U.S. history. (The largest was in 1862, when the U.S. government executed 38 Dakota warriors). They convicted the Irishmen of murder, and accused them of being terrorists from a secret organization called the Molly Maguires. They executed ten more over the next two years, and imprisoned another twenty suspected Molly Maguires. Most of the convicted men were union activists. Some even held public office, as sheriffs and school board members.

    However, there is no evidence that an organization called the Molly Maguires ever existed in the U.S. The only serious evidence against the men was presented by a spy, James McParland, working for the Pinkerton Detective Agency, who provided the plans and weapons the men purportedly used in their crimes. The entire legal process was a travesty: a private corporation (the Reading Railroad) set up the investigation through a private police force (the Pinkerton Detective Agency) and prosecuted them with their own company attorneys. No jurors were Irish, though several were recent German immigrants who had trouble understanding the proceedings.

    Nearly everything people “know” today about the Molly Maguires comes from Allan Pinkerton’s own work of fiction, The Molly Maguires and the Detectives (1877), which he marketed as nonfiction. His heavily biased book was the primary source for dozens of academic works, and for several pieces of fiction, including Arthur Conan Doyle’s final Sherlock Holmes novel, Valley of Fear (1915), and the 1970 Sean Connery film, Molly Maguires.

    News is re-evaluating its hiring of former RNC head as a paid contributor following a major internal backlash from some of the network’s top on-air personalities.

    The network is expected to make a decision..shortly, according to a person with knowledge of the matter who asked not to be identified. Puck reported earlier Tuesday that the network, owned by Comcast Corp., planned to drop McDaniel.

    So-called 'biofuels' are NOT a climate solution. They are capitalist industrialist greenwashing at its worst.

    Below is a statement posted Friday by Greta Thunberg. She and a group of activists are protesting in Sundsvall, Sweden, outside the annual general meeting of Svenska Cellulosa.

    Here is what Greta wrote...

    Forestry is Sweden's single largest emitter of greenhouse gases and the main driving factor behind loss of habitat and species.

    Svenska Cellulosa (SCA) is Europe’s largest private forest owner, and we are demanding an end to their systematic clear-cutting of irreplaceable natural forests with high importance for climate and biodiversity. After the demonstration, some of us went inside the meeting to demand accountability.

    SCA's logging is built on systematically expanding into the last remaining natural forests, forests whose conditions are vital for many species and which have stored carbon for up to thousands of years, and thus both slow down and act as protection against the climate crisis.

    These ecosystems are destroyed to make place for the replanting of environmentally harmful monoculture tree plantations. Often, these monocultures consist of invasive lodgepole pine, which is devastating for indigenous Sámi reindeer herding.

    Forest companies, despite their claims, don't consult with Sámi villages on equal terms, and can more or less freely log due to loopholes in laws that they use to their advantage. The Sámi are heavily affected by both the climate crisis & industries like mining and forestry.

    All these factors are extensions of the colonialism that has been going on in Sweden for centuries.

    Clear-cutting is also a climate bomb. The carbon emitted during clearcuts takes many decades for the replanted trees to reabsorb. This is time we do not have.

    After harvesting, the majority of the biomass goes to short-lived products and bioenergy with a higher carbon footprint than burning fossil fuels. Biofuels are nevertheless seen by many as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, much to the delight of the forest lobby. They are the ones who have largely created and spread this greenwashed narrative, due to enormous financial interests.

    The burning of biomass leads to more carbon dioxide emissions per unit of energy than other fossil fuels. But, thanks to loopholes in international climate frameworks, it is counted as "climate neutral," so these emissions are not counted in the statistics. Many countries' climate policies, including Sweden's, are completely dependent on these loopholes which actually do more harm than good, not only for the climate but also for the environment and biological diversity.

    The level of awareness around these issues is almost non-existent. In this knowledge gap, false solutions to the climate and environmental crisis flourish. False solutions that lead to increased exploitation of nature, continued emissions of greenhouse gases that destabilise the planet and cause the death and suffering of countless people, and continued colonisation and destruction of lands that we all depend on.

    We demand protection and restoration of forest ecosystems, an end to clear-cutting and the planting of lodgepole pine as well as a transition to making long-lived products.
