Feeling lost and with no direction, what skill should I learn?

Hi everyone. I am feeling like I've lost any direction after getting laid off earlier this year (was working as an analyst in telecom and very recently landed a much lower position in healthcare data entry due to necessity). I already have several hobbies but I am either burnt out on them or they have lost their luster (similar...

I’m taking some welding classes later this year. Being able to fix or create things with a welder seems like a useful skill to have.

I suspect the intro classes are all the same regardless if you take welding into the art direction or the mechanical direction.

The link has extra panels and a comment from the artists that explains it more. This isn’t a joke so much as it is explaining their situation in a joking manner.

“Per our discussion, you do not want to hear anything more about updating from a windows 7 machine that is no longer being updated, no longer receiving security fixes, and is end of support, to my recommended windows 10/11 machine. You’re aware that I have advised you that not updating is possibly a HIPPA violation.

This email confirms that I will no longer bring the subject up again.”

That’s it. CYA and print that Sent item out. Move on to the next issue.

    Trombone.

You don’t need to learn finger combinations like on most brass and woodwinds, nor chords like piano and other string instruments. Just the 7 positions the slide can be at. Blow a raspberry and the note comes out.

Trumpet is similar but a lot easier to store and transport. Also those three valves are pretty much the same amongst other brass instruments like French horn, baritone, tuba, etc. so you can move between instruments if you choose.

    Brkdncr ,

You could have marked your slide, but also if you can’t hear when a note isn’t right you’re doing music on hard mode.

    Brkdncr ,

Agreed. There’s a lot more to it, the mouthpiece is small, hand position in the horn, knowing how to deal with what’s directly behind you.

My recent unpopular opinion post on this topic was controversial

    $$$.

Front engine, rear drive is easy to build. Good driving characteristics until you lose traction in the rear, which isn’t hard because there’s not much weight back there. You get over steer which isn’t the easiest to deal with.

Front engine, front drive is cheap to build. Good driving characteristics until you start pushing the limits, then you get under steer which is easy to deal with by letting off the gas.

Rear engine, rear wheel drive. Same cost advantages of Front/front but has some quirky driving characteristics.

    Rear engine, front drive: nope.

AWD: better driving characteristics, more cost and more weight.

Mid engine, rwd: similar to rear/rear, but costs more, better handling.

    Brkdncr ,

AWD adds weight, cost, and traction regardless of the engine layout.

Your comments have a pretty high negative number, consistently.

The comments themselves don’t seem out of place. I personally wouldn’t ban you if I had the authority because you seem to be doing a good job of lowering your own visibility.

I might suggest that your comments aren’t very constructive. You may need to think about what you’re trying to accomplish and word it better before you hit the reply button.

So to wrap it up, you probably should be worried, but not because you could get banned, but because you seem to have unconstructive comments.

    Can I refuse MS Authenticator?

So my company decided to migrate office suite and email etc to Microsoft365. Whatever. But for 2FA login they decided to disable the option to choose "any authenticator" and force Microsoft Authenticator on the (private) phones of both employees and volunteers. Is there any valid reason why they would do this, like it's...

    Brkdncr ,

While it’s not technically safer, MS does make it a lot easier to set policy’s where you check a box for MSAuth.

Since the config is less complex and easier, it’s demonstratably safer to implement it this way.

Both mint and Ubuntu had issues with simple things like updating or running software, out of the box. Normal computer users won’t put up with that.

Set up iperf on a machine connected to your router.

From your machine, connect it to the router too and see if iperf shows good speed.

Take your machine to another room and plug into your lan and test again.

If the speed is considerably lower then yes you have an internal network issue. I would look into how the cables connect to the router. It might be an old or cheap switch. It could also be the cables or cable ends themselves. I’ve seen cables that are terminated poorly cause slowness. I’ve seen two connections in a single cable end work but have lots of problems.

Are there any EV cars without any "technology"?

Like the title says, are there any EVs that just have a Bluetooth radio and that's it? Like a normal car, not a smartphone on wheels? If not, do you all think that this will actually happen at some point? This is the main reason why I can't (and will never) buy an EV. I like to have actual buttons everywhere on my car. I think...

Mitsubishi has been selling one for nearly a decade. It’s not great.

Toyota has a Corolla hybrid that seems pretty close.

The issue is that why would they build a budget EV when they can sell an expensive, high margin, EV? The batteries are low supply, high demand so they should be wringing every dollar possible from it.

Hey guys. I have a steam link I’ve used for quite some time. But I’m wanting to figure out a solution that is similar but grants full PC control. How to work with someone that regularly arrives as the wrong answer?

I work with a person that went presented with a problem, works through it and arrives at the wrong solution. When I have them show me the steps they took, it seems like they interpret things incorrectly. This isn't a language barrier, and it's not like they aren't reading what someone wrote....

    Brkdncr OP ,

    Most helpful, thanks.

    Brkdncr OP ,

If they are it’s not something that’s been told to me.

I’m very aware that people have different skills and limitations and adjust accordingly. I have done a lot, including helping organize tasks, reviewing issues when they come up, setting goals, positive reinforcement, asking how they want me to change to help them further, suggesting learning opportunities, suggesting social interaction opportunities…

Let’s not assume I came to post this without first trying different techniques, researching topics on how to manage people like this, and reaching out to management peers for possible solutions. I’ve had a few upper management people that knew this person tell me “some people just don’t get it” and “they have possibly hit their peak”

    Brkdncr OP ,

I probably should have included that these were all great responses; just that I’ve tried them.

    Brkdncr OP ,

Thanks, I will do that. Keep in mind that I presented a single situation. It also applies to things like following documentation steps, and coming up with steps on their own to reach a defined goal.

    Brkdncr OP ,

Yeah, it’s vague on purpose. No, not customers.
