Absolutely and with great game engines like Godot it has never been easier to make open-source games from scratch as well.

Anything metal or wood will probably create too much dust etc.

Maybe get a 3D printer?

Our instance on https://movim.slrpnk.net is only a few commits behind this release, but I'll likely update it later today.

Mostly fine, but at this point I would wait for the new Battlemage GPUs that should come out soon.

What is the one year message limit on the Matrix server?

I have read in the TOS for the Matrix server that all messages are deleted after one year. If I am talking with someone, does that mean that messages that are older than a year are deleted on my side, or both sides of the conversation? What if the chat is E2EE? If I am using a device that is signed in and has seen old messages,...

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

That's not how Matrix works. Matrix runs an internal DAG that stores all messages basically permanently.

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

I assume the part in the TOS refers to an experimental feature of Synapse that allows setting a message retention time. I think what it does is to set a deleted flag in the DAG and maybe overwrite the internal storage...but deleting anything on Matrix is surprisingly difficult and this experimental feature comes with a big disclaimer in the config file.

However, the ever increasing storage requirements are a serious issue for large public Matrix servers, having resulted in some of them shutting down permanently and the tchncs one had to do expensive hardware upgrades solely because of that.

Its not a big deal to have one more user.

Beluga whale pair move from Ukraine's war-torn Kharkiv to Spain's Valencia ( www.reuters.com )

MADRID, June 20 (Reuters) - Marine biologists have moved a pair of beluga whales from the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv - the target of daily shelling by Russian forces - to the eastern Spanish city of Valencia, in what they described as a long and risky international rescue operation....

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

As much as I think these animals should not be held in captivity, seeing Beluga whales in Valencia years ago left a deep impression on me.

They have a large underwater window where you can try to interact with them if it isn't too crowded. Maybe I was more impressionable back then, but these animals are incredibly smart, almost an alien experience.

Almost as if it is a bad idea to use any kind of social media run by for-profit, venture-capital funded businesses... (sarcasm obviously).

protest does shine a light on humanities superficial respect for historically important monuments and cultural sites

Interestingly the former leader of the Taliban argued exactly the same way when asked why they destroyed some world famous statues in Afghanistan (but compared it to the total lack of care for the actual humans living in Afghanistan, which is ironic considering the source... but hey, everyone is the hero in their own story 🤷‍♂️ ).

The entirety of Dubai doesn't count?

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Yes, I could easily configure our Podman containers to auto-update, but given how there have been significant breaking bugs in Lemmy releases before, I think it's better to not automate it.

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Systemd is very useful for managing (rootless) Podman containers.

Looks really nice... I guess a good time to visit the Alpine glaciers before they are gone completely.

It's not that bad actually. Uganda has a very progressive refugee policy (likely because the President once was a refugee himself). But yeah, anything that could be seen as a threat to his decades long presidency is clamped down hard on.

"Moderation tools are nonexistent on here. It also eats up storage like crazy [...] The software is downright frustrating to work with" - Can any other instance admins relate to this?

After a year online the free speech-focused instance 'Burggit' is shutting down. Among other motivations, the admins point to grievances with the Lemmy software as one of the main reasons for shutting down the instance. In a first post asking about migrating to Sharkey, one of the admins states:...

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Here it isn't so heavy on CPU, but the database eats RAM like crazy. My guess would be that their server is constantly swapping out stuff from RAM due to insufficient surplus RAM and this as a result creates the high CPU load.

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

They are not included. You need to divide the 3.600€ by two main developers and then add up the irregular NLnet payments to that. So as a result it comes to approximately 3000€ for each of the two devs per month (6000€/month total). At least that is my understanding from what is written above.

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Hmm, I think there are more people that are #1 and #2 the same time (not me though) and the bigger divide is between those that rent a VPS and those that run a homelab.

Usually* there is a database for the file meta-data that will benefit from faster access times of a SSD, the files themselves can be on a HDD.

*not sure how Immich specifically does it.

@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

You forgot adding a link (or more likely the stupid Lemmy 0.19.4 post submission bug at fault again).

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Yeah, sounds like the same bug that prevents cross-posting to work properly on lemmy-ui.

Probably too hot to do hiking in central and southern Italy during that time.

poVoq Mod ,

Hmm, interesting project from a technical perspective for sure, but I am not exactly sure why anyone would use it for anything other than testing some Linux distribution.

I mean unlike Waydroid, which helps to run "that one Android app" you need on a mobile Linux device, there isn't really "that one Linux app" you need to run on an Android phone.

poVoq Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Hmm, yes maybe running GNU/Linux on a Lapdock could be an interesting usecase for this. Didn't think of that, thanks!

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Its a slippery slope thing. Sure, technically it doesn't break e2ee, but it basically forces app developers to integrate a trojan into their app that scans messages before they are encrypted and send.
Right now it is "only" for images, but once this is in place and generally accepted, what is stopping lawmakers to extend it to scanning all messages?

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

The main issue with their reporting is that they completely fail to mention that the profits of the retail chains have also spiked and are the main "cause" of these price increases.

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Perceived inflation is not the same as actual inflation as measured by the official inflation basket. Quite often you have a situation where day to day goods are increasing in prices (and thus driving perceived inflation), while more permanent expensive but rarely bought goods (TVs, cars etc.) are dropping in prices, so that on average the official inflation rate isn't increasing that much.

poVoq Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Its quite easy to make rainwater harvesting tanks from so called ferrocement, which is basically chickenmesh plastered with a thin layer of cement/sand mixture.

As for the shingles: I guess you could settle out or filter any solids that get washed off the roof?

A Modest Proposal: /c/pleasantpolitics

There is clearly a problem that most of the politics and news communities on Lemmy are unpleasant places to take part in discussion. People yell at each other. The tone of disagreements is that of saying what your opinion is, and insulting the other person if they don't agree with your opinion, or a bunch of people giving quick...

poVoq Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

We are defederated from Lemmygrad and Hexbear so at least that part of the Lemmyverse wouldn't be able to participate if the community was hosted on SLRPNK.

poVoq Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

I would like to discuss this with the other admins first. To be honest I am a bit sceptical as I don't think what you want to do can be really done as even if you think you are being unbiased in your banning criteria, it is basically impossible to do so. And as a result you will likely get an endless number of "polite" concern trolls that will test how far they can go.

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

I was being ironic. But look for a microwave with grill function. That is entirely separate from the microwave itself and adds some infrared heaters at the top. This is insufficient for baking, but frozen pizza with a pre-baked crust will absolutely get a bit cispsy in it.

Upgrade to 0.19.5 was a quick one. Please let us know if this fixed the main issues with the lemmy-ui interface on 0.19.4.
