You can get a burn from a reflection. There’s a building in Las Vegas that caused this problem due to its windows and angle towards the sun.

There are too many variables to say if you’ll get a burn though.

How to work with someone that regularly arrives as the wrong answer?

I work with a person that went presented with a problem, works through it and arrives at the wrong solution. When I have them show me the steps they took, it seems like they interpret things incorrectly. This isn't a language barrier, and it's not like they aren't reading what someone wrote....

Brkdncr OP ,

Vagueness was intentional.

In this case I was an observer, so my writing style didn’t affect the situation I had described. I’m also not the first to recognize this type of problem with the employee.

Brkdncr OP ,

No SOP because no one else has trouble understanding this process. At the level they are at they shouldn’t need written steps for this and every other aspect of their job.

I’ve been suspecting adhd for a while but I’m not sure how to approach that topic.

Brkdncr OP ,

if others were regularly coming to me with questions about my direction I would agree with you. In this case I was an outside observer to how the situation transpired, and the individual seems to run into this problem with me and others.

Brkdncr OP ,

Great example/joke. A rational person would either understand that six eggs were wanted, or that six cartons of milk is an odd request and ask for confirmation that they understood the request correctly.

My problem to solve is how do I fix this? While clear instruction should be given, I can’t be there to translate every request this person receives, nor should I have to approve every action they want to take.

Brkdncr OP ,

I wasn’t directly involved in this example, so if the problem was with how I communicate it didn’t affect this situation.

I agree that the request was worded poorly but you correctly hesitated.

Unfortunately they seem to be the only one that has difficulty in asking questions when the instructions are unclear or outside the norm.

Brkdncr OP ,

Agreed. I didn’t proof what I wrote very well.

This example didn’t involve me though, so my poorly written post and writing style shouldn’t have impacted this situation.

Brkdncr OP ,

I agree, but here is some more info:

Employee seems to misunderstand requests from most people and published documentation at a rate much higher than others.

Employee has had years to figure out how people communicate with them.

In this case I wasn’t the one that worded the request poorly, it was someone else. I have adapted to using lists when making requests, and avoiding vague statements, but I can’t expect everyone to adapt to this person and I can’t be there to translate everything for them.

Brkdncr OP ,

Another example:

The product they were sending is only relevant to remote workers.

The product group they were to send it to consists of remote workers and in-office workers.

They are aware that the product they are sending is only for remote workers.

This isn’t the first time they have had to send something to only remote workers.

They sent it to all of them instead of only the remote workers.

While I concede that the instruction could have been worded better, they should have either known to send the product to the appropriate people or asked questions.

Others have said in this post that I need to improve my comms skills, but this person regularly mis-interprets things from everyone, including documentation and guides, and then executes without hesitation. So how do we fix the individual?

Brkdncr ,

There is a lot of hip hop that fits this idea of great music with wacky lyrics.

Megan thee stallion, cardi b, and the like sing some raunchy songs.

Bbno$, yung gravy, lil dicky, flynt flossy and the entire turquoise jeep records collection of artists are humor-forward

Then theres czarface which has made many albums all about comic book characters.

Why does a state like California that has supermajorities in both houses of the legislature not have a livable wage, housing guarantees, universal healthcare, and other very progressive policies?

I keep being told it's because of the Republicans that we can't have nice things. So what gives in California? We should be overflowing with progressive policies.

Sennheiser, jabber. You’ll need to buy into their up-market products though.

r/sysadmin and the size of this community

So I have been a part of this community for a while and it seems pretty quiet. I know Lemmy is not as big as Reddit so this community will always be much smaller but I kind of miss the activity on r/sysadmin. Infinity for Reddit still works for view only so I have been scrolling though posts on Reddit as some of the stories and...

Brkdncr ,

I disagree. Merge with techsupport or even technology. Critical mass needs to be natural.

What is the benefit of closing Studios? Why not sell them?

Yes, this is in relation to the closing of Tango Gameworks and Arcane Austin. Is there some immediate monetary benefit behind it that I have no idea about? Is it so they can keep the IPs and not have to deal with the developers? Are the Studios too expensive for anyone to buy? I honestly don't understand how these executives...

Brkdncr ,

There are no buyers for studios that had their IP stripped already.

Brkdncr ,

I love how when this gets recommended the responses turn into trying to find the more exact correct amount to set the line at. Just like normal politics though, they get bogged down so much that what seemed like a simple answer turns into discuss, defer, delay, and the original point was missed.

Brkdncr ,

Back when Reddit was still “new” people posted niche content into a few broad categories until there was enough of that content to start its own category.

I wish people used Lemmy like that.

Let's gloat a little, What makes Lemmy/Mastodon/KBin/BlueSky and the Fediverse better than Facebook/Reddit/Twitter? ( kbin.social )

With Lemmy - I can block whomever is bothering me and I will not see their posts ever again. I can see their notifications and they somehow can keep responding to me (which ought to be worked on). But erasing their existence on my end should be a thing when you don't want to deal with them....

Brkdncr ,

Did gentoo stage 1 and used that to get through my college education learning to manage windows systems.

It was neat. I feel like I will never need to do it again.

If you could take a single character out of a piece of media (book, film, TV show, video game, etc) who would it be?

They would lose any magical powers they may have had in the book, but anything they are, rather than can do, will stay. For example people from the His Dark Materials world would keep their daemons. You can take them out at any time in the story's plot, but for all other people consuming the media, it will be shown that the...

Brkdncr OP ,

I dated a uni prof for a long time and they work waay too much. Every night, every weekend, much of the summer. They then get paid peanuts.

It’s less than minimum wage and many of the consumables they pay for themselves.

Then the big wigs at the top get too much compensation.

Then the vendors get paid too much to provide piss-poor software and services.

  • Secure erase using the drive OEMs tool.
  • If you were using something like bitlocker then simply dump the key.
  • Wood chipper or some other form of absolute physical destruction.
Brkdncr ,

You can’t fill the drive. The drive decides when to use its buffered free storage blocks. It’s at the hardware level and only the Secure Erase command will clear it.

Brkdncr ,

So many people here responding with outdated misinformation.

Brkdncr ,

Then why do that when you can do a secure erase in seconds?

Do I need a new phone for 2FA? (Tad Long)

So recently my work, a mid sized engineering firm, decided to start upgrading their IT security. The rumor is that we have potential DOD work coming our way. Over the past few months there has been multiple company decided changes to our 2 factor authentication mobile app. I willingly installed the app on my phone over a year...

Brkdncr ,

Ask them to reimburse you the cost of a new phone.

Ask them to give you a yubikey or some other OTP token device.

As much as I love the idea of the @framework laptop, and as much as I want one, I just can't seem to justify it over my current Lenovo T480. Other than a faster/newer processor, I'm not sure that I'd truly get any benefit at this point in time. :sadness:

Brkdncr ,

Lenovo t-series is pretty good.

Brkdncr ,

They probably said the same thing about riding horses when cars became popular.

In grade school was taught how to write cursive so I could be taught how to use it when writing checks. I was taught that cursive was more resistant to fraud because someone would be comparing writing styles when clearing checks.

My cleared checks were returned to me by the bank so I would be able to keep record of the transactions.

My 1st bank had 2 branches and would mail a double sided newsletter to me every month. They had a play area for kids in their lobby since the line to wait for any of their 10 tellers would get long on payday.

One side of the bank was the smoking section.

Sometimes if I was in a hurry I would use their drive-up. It had 3 manned stalls, but would use vacuum tubes to send and return checks or deposit slips for the 2nd and 3rd stall.

Brkdncr ,

Yup. I forgot to add that when debit cards became a thing you basically used them as a 24x7 bank teller, usually only at the bank. Sometimes your bank would have an atm at its own stand at the grocery store.

Oh and the delays at the grocery store because of slow check writing or getting a check OK’d.

Brkdncr ,

What does this even accomplish? If your execs are working 6 days a week but no one else is, is any work really getting done on that extra day?

Brkdncr ,

“Why should we upgrade our tech when we can just artificially reduce capacity and charge more for priority access?”

Brkdncr ,

The Amen Break is a few seconds sample that became drum and bass. All of drum and bass has roots from that sample.

a LOT of gun owners hate these types of dipshits. Leaving a gun out like that should be a fine or felony.

Brkdncr ,

This is why I think there needs to be a way to recoup costs besides donations. Having a blended income is a good thing.

Donations, subscriptions, “gold”, maybe a light sprinkling of ads or sponsors, and even a paid api for LLMs to scrape.

Brkdncr , (edited )

Reddit did it wrong. Here’s how I would do it:

  • register as a non profit
  • determine the per-user cost and make it available for the user to see it.
  • create a “show me ads” toggle for the user to enable. Indicate how much this covers their cost.
  • create a “sell my content” toggle and indicate how much this covers their cost.
  • create a donation field.
  • recalculate the numbers and prompt the user to make changes on a monthly basis.

It’s possible that enough donations would cover the entire cost of operations. In that case, as a non-profit it would be necessary to stop selling out the users when costs are covered.

Can someone demystify computer Ports for me? Please? Blocking, unblocking, opening, allowing, VPNs and their effect, what ports are and what they do, step by step, when you have to interact with them?

It's the one thing when I'm configuring things that makes me wince because I know it will give me the business, and I know it shouldn't, but it does, every time. I have no real idea what I'm doing, what it is, how it works, so of course I'm blindly following instructions like a monkey at a typewriter....

Brkdncr ,

If an IP address is like a building address for a mall, ports are like suite numbers of the different businesses inside the mall.

There are a few types of ports, but mostly you deal with tcp and udp. Tcp ports create a connection, udp is connectionless.
