I like to ask a variety of questions, sometimes silly, serious, and/or strange. Never asking in an attempt to pester or “just asking questions” stuff.

I’m generally curious and/or trying to get a sense of people’s views.

ALostInquirer OP Mod ,

Has anyone tried making a spinning wheel of people associated with communities looking to change moderators and letting it determine who takes on the responsibilities?

ALostInquirer ,

I had been publishing articles on my own website since 2003, but I did that mostly manually by writing whole HTML pages.

Huh, so literally raw html? I know it's not too difficult, but I have wondered occasionally how many small websites may have been written that way.

ALostInquirer ,

Does it sometimes seem like commenting in high traffic online spaces feels this way too, not just Reddit?

ALostInquirer OP ,

Huh, thanks for the detailed reply! I suspected some of them must have something extra going on to help their time in the water, but wouldn't have thought this!

Were you able to feel how dry the otter was through the sealed fur, or was it sealed enough that you couldn't really tell?

ALostInquirer OP ,

Second, as a disposable, dead layer, it also provides protection against UV light and such. We don’t think of living out of water under the direct radiation from the sun as being particularly difficult or the environment harsh, because we casually do it every day, but it was a very hard problem for life to solve.

Oh yeah, that's a good point! I'd typically be more concerned with the drying out part for a lot of aquatic life, forgetting about the UV exposure issues.

ALostInquirer ,

Ooh, which drawing app did you use for this?

ALostInquirer ,

Thanks for the reply and note on the pen use!

ALostInquirer OP ,

Only an existential crisis? What about existential crises?

ALostInquirer OP ,

duplicate duplicate, unless there's something you'd prefer with multiplidicity

ALostInquirer OP ,

I was looking for a word that might immediately resolve questions regarding how it might work and the like, to avoid those follow-up questions and free people up to answer however they imagine it would work. It's...Kinda worked? Aside from a few replies like this, which I don't mind, I just wanted to encourage people to roll with it as they will

ALostInquirer ,

Apart from the HackerNews sort, wouldn't this also be feasible with a list on Mastodon/Akkoma/Misskey of news accounts (unofficial and official)?

ALostInquirer ,

I'm confused on your use of "but" here; are you aware you can do likewise within Mastodon (and in some more interesting ways, Misskey & its forks) and third-party apps without another tool (Skyfeed) or any coding? Regardless, I agree that custom feeds have a lot of potential, albeit I've not found many that demo it yet.

ALostInquirer ,

Oh! Hey, it is cool! Sorry to have rained on that, it was a fault in how I was reading it more than the way you wrote it, I think

ALostInquirer ,

For those interested in discussing their job searches, did you know there's a !jobs community? Not terribly active at the moment, but given the discussion here there seems to be some potential interest

ALostInquirer OP ,

Any odd stories from that job?

ALostInquirer OP ,

Anyways. I know you probably wanted a story that was more interesting than depressing, but that’s just one that really stuck with me from that point in my life there. I don’t think that’s a normal experience for a Night Auditor to have, so I wouldn’t take my experience as a reason to dissuade anyone from taking the position, but you asked for a story, and so you got one.

Even a depressing story is interesting in its own way, so I appreciate it all the same! I can see why the experience stuck with you, it's a rough situation to find oneself in for almost all involved

ALostInquirer ,

Asking similarly as I did with a Twitter post, because I think it's worth discussing (and people should want others to leave the corporate enclosures so info on the internet may move more freely):

How might we help and encourage people to leave Reddit?

Where to find online communities of people making stuff mainly as a hobby?

Stuff could be anything, digital or physical, but the idea is of discussing and doing it as a hobby without any pressure or push to make it a business or side-gig. Nothing against that, simply that communities/groups with that atmosphere are easy enough to find as-is.

ALostInquirer ,

Is living room a new name for worship space?

ALostInquirer ,

What is the ontology of a concept or idea? If nothing doesn't exist materially but strictly conceptually, does it not exist or is there a different term one should employ to refer to it? 🤔

ALostInquirer OP ,

Thanks for the pointers, I'll have to give'em a look! Eusociality does sound right in line with what I was wondering about, but hadn't heard of it before!

ALostInquirer OP ,

I thought of "surfing the web" as more of a superficial approach personally. I was thinking more along the lines of "researching" or digging through sites with a similar topic but each went deeper or in different directions than the first.

Although on second thought and a little looking around, it looks like "net diver" never took off as its own term? What strange rocks have I been under? 😵

Are there any WYSIWYG html editors? just curious

Hello, i was looking for a wysiwyg html editors i could use for my personal website, perferrably just as a simple open source desktop program on linux (though anything else is fine). i DID find something called KompoZer but i was wondering if there's any other ones, thanks

ALostInquirer ,

Have you seen Publii yet? Dunno how well it works on Linux, but there's a version for Linux as well.

ALostInquirer ,

if you primarily watch videos with your smartphone, couldn't you call it a pocket tv?

https://media1.tenor.com/m/QLbV11ltA8cAAAAC/smart-thinking.gif

ALostInquirer ,

Would this require feeding it batteries like a triggerhappy machine gunner?

ALostInquirer ,

Is this ever noted in any of the documentation, outside of some fine print, with the printer to let someone know that it's being done? If your product is secretly leaving indicators for anyone aware of the indicators to track your actions in some way, that's problematic in my opinion.

Given a printer is arguably a lesser issue anymore, but the same idea applies with other tech.

Do others feel somewhat conflicted talking positively about commercial goods/services?

Sometimes I feel like if I do so I'm basically serving as an ad, and I don't really care for that, especially if later I find that the business was scummy in some ways (which is often the case, especially later as it changes leadership/ownership)....

ALostInquirer OP ,

This is mostly a symptom of being online too much and seeing enough ads to think critically about them.

Would this apply even in the case of an avid ad-blocking person? At least that's my situation, so what I'm seeing is less the ad-ridden web and more what remains, which is still a lot of discussion of commercial stuff.

I guess I'm thinking along the lines of the "What the hell is water?" story in a way.

ALostInquirer OP ,

Your last sentence gets at part of what I was thinking in writing this question. I see where others are coming from when talking among friends or not awkwardly dropping in products/titles, but it's that limbo space when either talking among acquaintances or online with strangers where it gets murkier to me.

I think some of this also comes from the posting culture you see if you browse microblogging platforms, even apart from influencer-types, which I think comes from the constraints of a lower character count to some degree.

ALostInquirer OP ,

But the fact that you feel like you’re an ad suggests that maybe you’re doing it too often.

It's not that I feel like that, as I don't talk much about these things, and I don't because even the little I might sometimes feels that way. It's more of a conflicted feeling than feeling outright like an ad, as in that it can come across as promotional even if it may simply be talking about a good experience.

ALostInquirer OP ,

I feel less conflicted about talking up community-built things than business-built things, since the former can use the attention and typically lacks any sort of marketing or other means of promoting themselves. Businesses don't need any more of either given they often literally have marketing divisions or can afford to hire marketing firms.

Is Lemmy World's default when signed in local? Or is this a consequence of many more active communities being there?
