'It’s Misguided to Say That #CEOS Are Warming to #Trump. Here’s Why'
“…even after the collapse of Trump’s #business advisory councils in Aug 2017, triggered by the exits of #Merck’s Kenneth C. Frazier, #Disney’s Bob Iger, & #Unilever’s Paul Polman, among others horrified by Trump’s kind words to the #WhiteNationalists at a #Charlottesville rally.
@rbreich It's sickening that #BobIger has directed #WaltDisneyCo to resume contributions to anti-LGBTQ+ #GOP to appease #DeSantis and a handful of filthy rich fascist Wall Street investors.
#Disney isn't for regular Americans anymore. It's for the rich and the MAGA.
This is great. Disney workers, trying to unionize, created buttons and stickers featuring Mickey Mouse's raised, clenched fist. It's public domain after all! Disney tried to stop them wearing these at work, but there's a law that says companies can't do that, even if they have a dress code, so the unionizers are suing Disney.
So, the Rock just signed a 'first look' deal with #Disney, meaning he will be producing a number of projects for theaters and streaming. This is actually a really big deal for a number of reasons, but I think one thing we may see soon is an invasion of 'Hollywood' from the #Anoai family. He's got about twenty of his family members working for #WWE television now, and this is just getting audiences ready for some very specific representation. 😎
Today in Labor History May 29, 1941: Animators working for Walt Disney begin a five-week strike for recognition of their union, the Screen Cartoonists’ Guild. Disney’s initial response was to fire them. However, the union held fast and ultimately prevailed, winning union recognition. Still, dozens of Disney’s best animators left for good, joining other studios or, as in the case of Hank Ketchum (creator of Dennis the Menace), starting their own studio, United Productions. At the time of the strike, the Disney animators were working on Dumbo. The clowns in the film were a caricature of strikers, when they “hit the big boss for a raise.”
@MushuChupacabra@wintermute_oregon I'm mixed on a take like this. He did make the state a lot better, but it's to such a degree that people have swarmed the state and people are now complaining that the cost of living is too high. Between that and the authoritarian/pseudofascist way he likes to address culture war issues (banning handing out #Nazi pamphlets in public, punishing #Disney for being woke, etc.), I don't think #DeSantis should be too closely emulated.
Saw someone post a stupid Forbes article that says the profit from the new Star Wars movies doesn’t cover the cost Disney spent buying the franchise.
Duh. That’s only one small slice of the revenue stream. Buying a franchise is a long term investment and takes over all the revenue streams and all future revenue streams. I have no doubt Disney is quite happy with their investment.
#Disney secured enough shareholder votes to defeat a challenge against its board mounted by #NelsonPeltz's hedge fund #Trian Fund Mgmt.
Enough votes were cast as of Tues night to put Disney's board of dirs safely ahead of Trian's 2 challengers, that included #Peltz & fmr Disney CFO Jay Rasulo, per sources.
#NelsonPeltz is the billionaire & #GOP#megadonor who on the day the #Jan6#insurrection, disavowed #Trump, calling it a “disgrace” & apologized for voting for Trump.
But earlier this month, #Peltz had breakfast w/Trump & other billionaires — including hotelier #SteveWynn, #ElonMusk, & fmr Marvel chair #IsaacPerlmutter — at Peltz’s “luxurious oceanfront mansion” in #Florida. Peltz then told the FT that he would “probably” vote for Trump in 2024.
The #Disney World oversight board [#Gestapo] installed by #DeSantis accused its predecessor of using an 11th-hr agreement to sharply curtail the new board’s powers & bolster the company’s control over the #Florida-based amusement park.
[So, DeSantis renamed it & replaced 5 members selected by Disney, w/ 5 members he hand-picked.]
Allies of #Florida Gov. Ron #DeSantis and #Disney reached a settlement agreement Wednesday in a lawsuit over who controls Walt Disney World’s governing district.
Hello,
I was originally on ppb1701@noc.social, but started my own instance.
A little about me, I’m a Software Engineer from Tennessee. Been #Coding for over a decade, primarily in the .Net world, but also some Flutter and Ruby. I enjoy #gaming, #SteamDeck, #Disney, #StarWars, and #StarTrek.
Lanny Smoot has been innovating at the Walt Disney Company for more than 25 years, and was involved in projects such as the creation of BB-8, and a realistic lightsaber that debuted at the now-closed Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. He talked to IGN about bringing Star Wars and Holodeck dreams to life, his love of inventing, and his hopes that he can be a role model for Black kids. Read more about him in this @Flipboard Storyboard.
It's hard to find Black princesses to appear at children's birthday parties and if you manage to hire one, she'll usually be appearing as Tiana, Disney’s first Black princess from the 2009 film "The Princess and The Frog." TODAY talked to women who are righting that wrong. "Having Black women play this role for little girls can be seen as a mode of resistance, a way of telling little girls that yes, you can aspire to it," says Patricia Davis, a critical/cultural studies scholar at Northeastern University.
Florida shines under DeSantis' leadership. His liberal critics should learn from him. ( www.usatoday.com )
