W ostatnim odcinku pierwszego sezonu ICD Weekend Arek i Kuba opowiadają o newsach dotyczacych Facebooka, Apple i AI oraz dzielą się nowymi rekomendacjami aplikacji z F-Droida.
Dear tech blogs. Please stop.
These are massive trillion+ dollar megacorporations.
There’s no “war”, no need to choose sides. No flame wars to be had to take more of our money.
These are appliances to get stuff done or enjoy for fun.
Period.
Apple’s industry-defining products made it the juggernaut it is today. But as iPhone sales continue to stagnate and the Vision Pro vastly underperforms, the company’s long-term prospects look increasingly dicey.
Maryland Apple Store Employees Vote in Favor of Strike
It’s been a busy weekend for union organizing efforts at U.S. Apple stores, with the union at one store voting to authorize a strike, while workers at another store voted against forming a union. https://t.ly/btWHh
I feel conflicted about this because I know journalism is in a rough spot, but I also hate the online ads so much. Usually I’d say this would be a nudge to force them to change course, but given the media’s in such dire straits, I’m not so sure this time.
In this week’s Disconnect Roundup, Apple delivered an insult to life itself by crushing all human creativity into an iPad Pro in its recent ad. Plus, recommended reads, labor updates, and other news you might have missed.
On top of the great work that @AsahiLinux and the Fedora Asahi SIG do, they've also worked to line up releases with the rest of Fedora, so thank you for that!
This release brings:
OpenGL 4.6
High quality audio out of the box
Plasma, Gnome, Server, and Minimal variants available
Instead of making the already-too-thin iPad Pro thinner they should have added more battery capacity. People rave about the battery life of iPads , but if you use processor intensive applications they don’t last all day. Far from it. From the very beginning I used my iPad Pro plugged in, because it didn’t last a days painting.
Apple's attempt to prevent fingerprinting through the required reason API seems to be useless. Facebook just updated their iOS app. The app still sends the uptime and disk space information off-device. It declares reasons that prevent the app from sending such data as per Apple documentation:
It’s hard not to come to the conclusion that Steve's explanation of what happens in monopolistic companies is now coming true for Apple itself.
How many "product people" are in charge at Apple these days?
Because the execution on their products have declined a bit... and the culture of innovation, design and user-focused invention as a whole has essentially stopped.
#Apple#AppStore#AI#GenerativeAI#ContentModeration: "Apple has removed a number of AI image generation apps from the App Store after 404 Media found these apps advertised the ability to create nonconsensual nude images, a sign that app store operators are starting to take more action against these types of apps.
Overall, Apple removed three apps from the App Store, but only after we provided the company with links to the specific apps and their related ads, indicating the company was not able to find the apps that violated its policy itself.
Apple’s action comes after we reported on Monday that Instagram advertises nonconsensual AI nude apps. By browsing Meta’s Ad Library, which archives ads on its platform, when they ran, on what platforms, and who paid for them, we were able to find ads for five different apps, each with dozens of ads. Two of the ads were for web-based services, and three were for apps on the Apple App Store. Meta deleted the ads when we flagged them. Apple did not initially respond to a request for comment on that story, but reached out to me after it was published asking for more information. On Tuesday, Apple told us it removed the three apps on its App Store." https://www.404media.co/apple-removes-nonconsensual-ai-nude-apps-following-404-media-investigation/
Apple’s Vision Pro is a bad product with an even worse vision for the future of computation.
New sales numbers prove it’s a failure, but more than that it shows the idea of tech’s inevitability is a myth. We have the collective power to stop tech that doesn’t serve us.
Apple is cutting Vision Pro production as it fails to meet sales targets.
Analysts expected it to sell 700-800k units in 2024, but it could now be as low as 400k. A lower cost model could now be pushed beyond 2025, if it ever arrives.
Something "new" to explore on the workbench today: a 1995 #Apple#Macintosh#Performa 630 in the "DOS Compatible" variant. It’s a bit of an oddball machine from Apple‘s otherwise quite bland (in my opinion) beige era. It has both a regular 68040 Mac and a full 486/DX2-66 PC inside. Should even be capable of running Windows 95 alongside MacOS 8! Thanks to a very generous donation from @markuspooch I’m going to get to play with it. Thank you! #InTheLabDoingStuff#RetroComputing#VintageComputing
