😫Judge in #Trump#Documents Case Rejected Suggestions to Step Aside
Two federal judges in South #Florida privately urged Aileen M. #Cannon to decline the case when it was assigned to her last year, according to two people briefed on the matter. She chose to keep it.
Shortly after #AileenCannon drew the assignment in June 2023 to oversee #Trump’s classified documents case, 2 more experienced #Florida#judges on the federal bench urged her to pass it up & hand it off to another jurist.
The judges who approached Judge #AileenCannon —incl the #ChiefJudge in the So Dist of #Florida, Cecilia M. Altonaga— each asked her to consider whether it would be better if she were to decline the high-profile case, allowing it to go to another judge.
But Cannon, who was appointed by #Trump, wanted the case & refused the #judges’ entreaties.
#AileenCannon has broken, acc/to lawyers who operate there, w/a general practice of federal #judges in the Southern District of #Florida of delegating some pretrial motions to a magistrate — in this instance, Judge #BruceReinhart. While he is [technically] subordinate to her, Judge Reinhart is an older & much more experienced jurist. In 2022, he was the one who signed off on an #FBI#warrant to search #Trump’s #MarALago …for highly sensitive govt files that Trump kept after leaving office.
“A former top law enforcement official in #Florida is accusing Gov. Ron #DeSantis and his top aides of forcing him to retire after he refused to carry out orders he says were illegal or inappropriate, according to a lawsuit filed overnight.”
DeSantis declares state of emergency for South #Florida as torrential rain brings heavy #flooding
"#FlashFlood warnings were issued for parts of Miami-Dade and Broward counties, where rainfall rates of several inches an hour submerged streets and snarled traffic.
The storms are part of a stalled system that's pummeled Florida, dumping a month's worth of rain in just 24 hours, with more rain forecast this week."
"When we hear about the threat of #flooding and #SeaLevelRise caused by #ClimateChange, that may appear like a distant future. It’s not — and this week’s torrential rainfall proves South #Florida is not fully ready for increased water levels despite local governments and the state having spent millions of dollars to keep streets dry."
"A federal judge has ruled that Florida’s new restrictions on gender-affirming treatment for children are unconstitutional, and that Gov. Ron DeSantis and other Republican lawmakers who supported them were not acting in the interest of public health."
"Florida’s ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors and several of the provisions restricting such care for adults are unconstitutional, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday, finding after trial that animus impermissibly motivated the legislative and administrative actions.
"U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle’s fiery, 105-page ruling is a complete and proper repudiation of the campaign of hate against transgender people employed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and his allies in the legislature and appointees within his administration."
You have to carefully read this Axios piece -- on the rise of "partisan-backed outlets designed to look like impartial news outlets" -- to learn what should have been shouted right at the top: The overwhelming majority of these "pink slime" sites are engineered by right-wingers.
With that context firmly in your mind, do read it.
@dangillmor just want to point out the Right is treating #Florida like a swing state.
"Nearly half (45%) of the sites observed as part of the study were targeted to communities or regions in swing states, according to an Axios analysis of the sites. The most frequently targeted states are Illinois, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Ohio, Florida, Michigan and Georgia."
Not much of a #Florida#Palestine update except this movie screening of Where Olive Trees Weep coming up. Filmed in 2022 in the occupied West Bank, this documentary dives into colonization and the ongoing genocide.

#ExtremeHeat Is Endangering America's Workers—and Its Economy
"Public Citizen, a Washington, D.C., based consumer rights advocacy group, estimates that extreme heat contributes to between 600 and 2,000 deaths a year, along with 170,000 injuries, making heat one of the three main causes of death and injury in the American #workplace.
In most American states, you can be fined for leaving a dog outside without water or shade."
[Workers don't have such protection].
"Yesterday, #California regulators voted to establish #heat protections for indoor workers for the first time.
#Florida proactively passed legislation that would block any future local #HeatProtections for workers, and #Texas passed a law to eliminate the bare minimum form of protection, mandated water breaks for construction workers.
Most states, though, simply have no laws on the books to address the risk of work-related heat illness."
