Article somehow casting Biden in a negative light... Is this balanced reporting? No, it's just ozma posting about his crush. Again.

dream_weasel ,

Oh shit! Not the swimmer with the stutter from men of honor! That will cost Biden literally dozen of people.

I didn't forget the s.

dream_weasel ,

Not in the nightstand. That's just the right height and security for any little kid visitor to end up on the news.

dream_weasel , (edited )

Honestly? It would keep him hopefully from having a close enough election to contest it, game it, and potentially evade punishment for the crimes he's actually on trial RIGHT NOW for committing. Then there is precedent for punishing a president and guess who can be next?

Biden does not sit on a button that says "lower gas prices" or "defund Israel" or "hold trump accountable" or any of a whole variety of things in the first place. Can he do more? Sure. Would I trash him because everybody has to do the exact right thing with the exact right issue every time or I'm going to take my ball and go home to let the other guy win and escape punishment for the first time ever? Fuck. No.

Get precedent for punishment, then punish them all.

dream_weasel ,

See last sentence of previous comment.

Nobody has to get away with anything, the only trick is not chasing every squirrel in the park to make sure nothing gets done.

dream_weasel ,

You forgot all the Montero and coin communities! It's a good start though to be sure.

dream_weasel ,

I thought last I heard about this that the bills for this weren't usually called for payment unless you were suing them for something. Could be mistaken

dream_weasel ,

By "play along" do you mean treat with basic decency and humanity? Because no that's not science, there's this guy from this weird old book the right really likes that says that. In fairness, it's kinda deep--like the second half of the book--so many don't read that far.

dream_weasel ,

Most people probably don't think doing anything based only on race is very good anymore. Unfortunately if you keep to a totally homogenous group, use only negative language to describe another group (like black people or hispanic people being this or lazy or entitled or weird names or bad music or whatever), and only associate people from those groups with causes or ideas you feel strongly negative about (BLM / border walls / etc)... You are still providing some good old fashioned indoctrination to that effect. That behavioral training will stick much deeper than any message you might give about not seeing color or similar. It's easy to get really sideways really fast with tribal behaviors, since that's sort of the main human distinguishing thing.

dream_weasel ,

So I'm gonna make some assumptions here to make this point, and I'm also gonna admit I'm a big old lefty and what I'm about to say even makes me a little uncomfortable (I'm working on it).

So first I am going to presume that you are male and not totally jacked or otherwise in amazing shape. What if you were in going to get take out and some called you Ms. Flax? You might say "it's actually Mr. Flax thx" and then they say "well, you're in pretty poor shape Ms. Flax... Men are jacked and you arent jacked... So... ?". This is patently shitty yeah? It's the same thing you have to go on if you hear anyone ask you to use different pronouns: the only way you can know for sure is to do a visual inspection of goods or a blood test. There is literally no circumstance where that would be ok. Now what is that was not once, but many interactions. If you weren't miffed to start, I bet it starts making you put out. I can understand that.

Now extend it to bathrooms. Do you usually card people in your house for the toilet or see it happen at restaurants? What if now it's on you to bench press 300 lb or you need to go sit in the girls room? It's demoralizing. It literally costs you nothing to just let someone go take a leak. You are at greater risk of some R/Tory going in to the bathroom with your kid to take some pictures than someone with some current or past gender identity issues (resolved or unresolved) who has to take a shit.

It is not always super easy. Even I sometimes see a really square jaw and broad shoulders and a skirt and it makes me uncomfortable for a split second until I remember I don't have any obligation but to call them what they want to be called and treat that person like a person. Then, it's just not that big of a deal.

dream_weasel , (edited )

You are within your rights to do how you want, but you'll catch some hell.

I know 6 people in the trans community now, none of whom have "detransitioned" and none of whose judgement I would question. I was lucky to spend a long time in both boarding school and college and every trans person I know was and is of unimpeachable character and intellect. My argument to you is that it cost you nothing to trust that any person is their own best judge of their needs and perspectives. In the worst case, you end up on a position to have a frank discussion with someone you have always supported. If the shoe were on the other foot, I know I would feel pretty salty if my friends or acquaintances thought they knew my struggles better than I did.

There's nothing to be gained from yelling at you or anyone else who isn't "on board", but just like other social issues, I don't think it's the job of your friendly neighborhood trans person to explain to you either (and that's a totally separate tough place to get to). I would rather step up and try my best to do that role myself.

On the one hand, crazy missing and what a weird set of circumstances, on the other hand, most people have never and will never have to put down a dog for something besides old age and won't ever understand.

I'm fairly confident she is a giant piece of crap, but there's a large reader base that lived their entire life inside the burbs that wouldn't ever be onboard with putting an animal down yourself. People that have never watched the young friendly doggo run a cow to death or similar. It's sad and infrequent but it happens.

Edit:

Bunch of experts here thinking it was our cows he was running to death. Or that we could have afforded to replace them, or that Mr doggo nicely comes back when he's called and stops running animals in the middle of a field. It was unfortunate, dangerous, and a rifle problem.

Changed the wording to make it clear this was not a little puppy at the time.

dream_weasel ,

Exactly.

Anyone not voting because they don't like Biden very much is missing the whole picture. It can always get worse.

dream_weasel ,

I'm fine with nuance like that and I agree.

It's like we are on a slick road headed for a tree. Biden is the brake and Trump is the accelerator: same 3 options for voting.

dream_weasel ,

It's a democracy as long as enough people vote that the results are clear cut. If it's close, it's easier to hide undemocratic behavior to nudge the results.

dream_weasel ,

Yeah CLEAR just needs to be it's own line, no problem. Need to do this with special assistance and higher class of service lines too.

As a person who used to frequently travel for work it's still really annoying to be in a line with people who don't know the rules they paid for even if it's in a separate line. I'm still waiting for the line you have to pass a time trial to get access to.

dream_weasel ,

Same on all fronts.

In my state you can just walk into a store at 21 and buy a handgun then concealed carry it. You don't have to prove proficiency, know you to service or maintain it, or even prove you know basic gun safety rules. All you do is bring money and ID, then wait for the waiting period to expire. It is bonkers.

dream_weasel ,

Also your right to protest is well protected.

If you try to protest in the US like France you might as well fucking die lol. Either the cops are going to shoot you or you lose your job after day 4 or less of protesting and your kids starve / you can no longer pay for the gas to get to the protest.

dream_weasel ,

That bundle of insurance or benefits with work was originally a fringe benefit to inflate value of positions iirc, but in current times yeah I think you got it.

dream_weasel ,

Ah yes, the old "it's propaganda because it doesn't include literally everything that has ever happened".

Bush dodged that shoe like a fucking boss so how bad a president could he have been?!

Is it rosy colored? Sure. Does it still have a generally true premise? IMO yes.

dream_weasel ,

The meme here overstates Biden, but that's not where you were originally poking.

It's totally fine to want a better candidate, but I don't get down with cutting off your nose to spite your face: "Haha allowing authoritarianism and the erosion of democracy by non participation or durden voting will sure teach the Dems to pick a better candidate! Got em!"

Side note, I think you mean right of Nixon, yeah?

Trump juror quits over fear of being outed after Fox News host says she should scare Trump ( www.salon.com )

I feel like I'm the only person who goes to a hotel to sleep, not chill a 24 pack of diet Coke and a bottle of champagne to drink (without this hotel ice) after eating a ham sandwich out of my rolling cooler which needs a top off.

Where are you all traveling with your champagne and ham sandwiches?!

dream_weasel ,

Cool man, definitely pass, but maybe before you do look in the rear view. If someone is coming to pass the 55 at 75, maybe you wait 8 seconds? If not, kinda YTA.

That's like when you see a chain of traffic and pull out in front of the last guy in the group: they have to brake because you couldn't wait a few more seconds to actually have enough time and space.

dream_weasel ,

This is not how calorie content is measured...

Biden promised to install thousands of EV charging stations. Only 7 have been built [so far] ( wapo.st )

“State transportation agencies are the recipients of the money,” he said. “Nearly all of them had no experience deploying electric vehicle charging stations before this law was enacted.”

dream_weasel ,

Almost like work costs money and it takes time to do said work and gain the experience to do it faster...

Or maybe Biden should have snapped his fingers and Tesla would build 50k more stations for free? Is that how it's supposed to work?

dream_weasel ,

So volunteer to let them drill for oil in your back yard? Is that the answer since anything that takes more time or more money than that is obviously not a worthwhile solution.

Even expanding public transport takes time to build infrastructure and contractors would need to get paid, you know, "funnelling money" to them. None of it is a one presidency job and none of it is free.

dream_weasel ,

By my read the money went to state transportation departments, or at least 5 of the $7B.

It sounds like a lot of money, but look at these high speed rail cost estimates. I do visual segments are HUNDREDS of billions of dollars. To re-design city bocks in Metro areas across the country is also quite expensive and ONLY benefits the people of those cities.

If we are going to make a swap to electric cars, which is IMO more plausible than a complete eisenhower-esque infrastructure overhaul, a fast and reliable charging network is a necessity.

Hate Biden if you want for in rental progress, but at least there IS some progress. I can't imagine it's easy to move the needle when an entire branch of government (the two houses) will actively vote against their own plans to keep Biden from getting any wins at all.

dream_weasel ,

It's less than $10B across 50 states for charging infrastructure, not to auto manufacturers as I understand, despite what you're saying. And yeah I have 2 electric cars in my garage and live next to two of the largest wind farms in the country.

Redoing rail the right way, doing full scale infrastructure overhauling to enable bicycles and revised public transit, or whatever else that services all 50 states are all projects with two more zeros and probably decades of work to build. Sorry you're jaded about that, but thousands of charging stations would be, I suspect, better in the long run than handing out bird scooters that you can only use year round in less than half of CONUS.

I will take the increment. If you don't want to buy an electric car, don't. Burn some gas and go vegan I guess.

Because there is still a reasonable veneer of democracy. The "both sides-ing" part of the electorate that doesnt see what is happening as a slow conversion to authoritarianism or fascism still know how to count and how elections are supposed to work. The system is getting slowly rigged from the inside, and it is extremely enabled by having questionable election results and need for recounts and exploitable legal actions.

You can see by watching coverage of Trump's second impeachment that there are principled old guard Republicans with lines they won't cross. There's also huge portion of the non-maga "center and center right" electorate thinks that this is all just some overblown BS and dont love Trump, but think it's all the same either way. A close election? Sure recount, sue, whatever, and those people will go along. Have a blowout confirmed by media and election polling and those people wake up and give a shit. All is not lost for democracy, but basically only half the electorate is even engaged in the discussion. In a close race a steal looks legit, in a landslide race that is overturned all the "nothing burger" crowd gets proof that there is blood in the water.

The US isn't Russia yet, but the insides are changing because fuckwits "protest" by sitting on their couches, not voting or engaging, and whining about how it doesnt matter. IT. MATTERS. This whole conversation is like the "first/then they came for the XXX and I said nothing" situation, but it starts at the ballot box.

dream_weasel ,

That's sort of my point. When everything looks close and reasonable, democracy is the veneer, but when it's fully exercised, democracy still works.

I have a hard time feeling bad for sanctioning a country whose government is actively expansionist and an extension of the mafia even if I feel bad for the citizens, but that's a separate discussion altogether.

Indiana Law Requires Professors to Promote ‘Intellectual Diversity’ or Face Penalties ( www.nytimes.com )

dream_weasel ,

Jurors provide no value beyond the markings even if they are over-classified. I mean I guess you could beat out the security classification guides and a derivative classification course... But even so, the president is only an OCA while in office so the point is kinda moot. I don't think the specific document content matters, just whether or not updated SCG exists with same content, yeah?

Basically, "this line is referencing this item in the guide, the guide still says classified, ergo this is a spill".

dream_weasel ,

Those were serious nominees? AND they didn't see the problem? How excruciatingly tone deaf.
