It’s odd how much things change and how much they stay the same. An interesting, difficult to notice language shift amongst kids is the complete absence of context for some pejorative uses of “gay.” For instance, the catchall rejection “no way, that’s gay” would elicit confusion first and possibly indignation after. However, other pejorative uses of “gay” still exist, for instance conflating homosexuality with femininity, with femininity having a negative connotation. It’s a partial extinction of meaning and I kinda love it.

All of that to say, the future is looking up in select ways and I’m all about those minuscule victories.

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy's massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It's been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let's say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they're what's colloquially referred to as...

So long as any active communities on .ml end up on the front page, they will inevitably draw attention away from less censored spaces. An interesting one is !comics which tends to rise and fall in popularity in inverse proportion to !comicstrips.

I agree that other communities have popped up to fill the same niches, so that’s step 1 and 2 done. Completely moving away from them, as OP intends, doesn’t seem like a plausible solution.

It’s difficult to bring attention to censorship by way of active censorship of the censorship. I occasionally wonder whether folks on .ml understand that they’re being fed a very particularly catered experience. At least .ml isn’t the largest instance anymore, otherwise getting the word out would be nigh impossible.

And it was a nice bit of foresight to spread the load!

One side argues “maybe we should be authoritarian buttholes and quietly silence dissent on our website of 10,000” and the other side replies “don’t be an authoritarian butthole or we’ll make fun of you in our community of 200.” I’m not impartial in this, but historical revisionism and whataboutism serving the cause of spreading propaganda is generally not the right direction. Looking at the result of both actions is a decent method for determining what you’d like to support or stifle.

Will the actions of the .ml admins, course unaltered, produce an environment that you're willing to post and interact with? For me, the answer is a big no.

You’ve misread the situation entirely. The most active community admin on our instance has described themselves as being staunchly pro-communism and it hasn’t evolved into a slap fight because they’ve been gently pursuing the goal of proliferating their views. Kind person, no clue how they tolerate the internet.

On the other hand, I’ve been hearing the same complaints about the Lemmy devs for like 4 years, long before META came around and before I had even tried lemmy. In this case, I firmly believe people simply dislike clandestine political chicanery and its intended goal.

The absence of an algorithm, funnily enough, encourages me to spend more time here. Reddit, Facebook, Insta, etc., all utilize algorithms that feel as if someone is attempting to actively distract and sell you something and that quickly becomes stressful. So many distractions vying for mindspace saturates my attention and makes me, personally, feel less human.

This is one of my pet peeve misspellings, so I apologize but I can’t help myself. It’s impossible to “effect” anything as it’s only ever a noun. Effects are the result of someone affecting something. For instance, someone can affect a justice, the effect being that they hold sway over the daily lives of many Americans despite the absence of credentials.

I don’t believe any of their spouses set out to do so when they married them but they certainly do so to the detriment of humanity at large, and that’s bad enough.

A bike wheel with an open air center without visible spokes would necessarily have to impart momentum across the top or bottom of the wheel, rather than the center, otherwise the momentum wouldn’t have a medium to travel through. The simplest method would be powered wheels set in a semicircle above or below, with a matching unpowered pair on the opposite side of the spokeless wheel. Or the chain loops all the way around a wheel fully enclosed in a large load-bearing construct. It’d look futuristic. Someone get on it, I can only get high and offer engineering ideas so often.

But in all seriousness, after reading the article I feel I need to enquire, in a general sense, what in the flying fuck? Did they not own enough garbage to be rid of some more? If so, that’s horrifically depressing. They would need to be so destitute that even their refuse is scarce. Was it even voluntary? Were they ordered to shit in the packages? The complete absence of reasonable causes is distressing. I mean, who chooses to give an entire city a Chicago sunroof?
