As we know this has been an election of silences...

While to some extent this has left Keir Starmer plenty of room to manoeuvre, with little opposition in the HoC the question of 'mandate' will be of little importance, until measures reach the HoL.

It will be interesting to see how the Lords look on (obstruct) policy that was not in the manifesto (at all, or only in general terms) when it comes to specific legislation.

Will Lords reform return as a key political issue in 2025!

We are in a crisis of crises.

Accelerating climate change, ecosystem breakdown, the sixth mass extinction — plus a complete failure of political leadership in Europe, Canada, and the United States.

But it's not time to give up. It's time to get to work.

Supreme Court Bestows Supreme Immunity on Donald Trump. Now, We The People are the Jurors.

“There will be evidentiary hearings, and we will begin to see and hear... some real time reporting coming out of federal court in DC, as the hearings are being conducted. We will learn about the evidence of Donald Trump's crimes, his corrupt attempt to hold on to the power of the presidency after he lost the presidential election”

'Sophomoric and foolish': Harvard Law professor rips into chief justice's immunity logic

"For all practical purposes, this is absolute immunity. It's dangerous, and it means we have to be even more careful, never to elect a president who would think, let alone say, he wants to be a dictator on day one."

Tribe specifically pointed out that the president could take a bribe, for example, if he claims that it is an official act as a president.

Few things feel more defeating than sharing how fed up I am with the President of the United States and getting some canned response about how none of that matters and that the only practical thing to do is vote for them.

“This isn't about your ideals at this point; it's about maintaining power. If you don't vote for them, the bad guys will win.”

“It's basic game theory.”

I'm so tired of getting told that line because I already know that. You know who doesn't?

The President of the United States.

lety OP ,
@lety@doesstuff.social avatar

The President is not only above the law but also above moral reproach.

They are above the question of compromising on the ideals they hold dear to their heart to better ensure the preservation of democratic rule in the United States.

As of today, nothing is stopping the President from disbanding the Supreme Court via the powers just granted to them by the Supreme Court.

That is a rational and reasonable flex of their executive authority in this moment of crisis. But they will not do so out of respect for tradition and the expectation of limits on their powers.

The bad guys won't share this sentiment.

Populism is on the rise – from the United States and Turkey to India and Hungary.

If you don’t know, “populism is a political ideology that positions ‘the people’ as a morally just, good group in society, in contrast with other people who are elitist or out of touch.”

But not all populists are the same, and there are some things that can be done to counter its rise

What is Fascism and Where does it Come From?

Fascism prospered from a paralysis of the state’s capacity for dispatching its key organizing functions, whether in the economy or for the larger tasks of keeping cohesion in society. At the worst points of the crisis, that paralysis encompassed the entire institutional machinery of politics, including the parliamentary and party-political frameworks of representation.
