I decided to find out if any progress had been made on the science behind why some ants are attracted to electrical fields. After filtering out exterminators (it's so demoralizing to search for information on creatures you love and find nothing but people who know nothing about them boasting about how they will kill them all) I found what looked like a blog. But, who the heck is "James Brown"? Never heard of the dude. Maybe he could be my new friend if he likes ants enough to blog about them!

Google doesn't care about burning down their brand. They have so much power and such a large monopoly they don't need to care about appeal anymore.

They're burning down facts, communication, news and learning.

The people who built this botshit want us all floundering and disconnected.

I keep wondering when they'll try rolling out some kind of Ministry of Truth to "save" us and tell us what's real.

The conclusions of abolition may sound simple, but the reasoning behind it goes much, much deeper than this "lego block" assumption you're scoffing at.

Note where Rodney King (1991) falls on the timeline of this chart:

violetmadder ,
@violetmadder@kolektiva.social avatar

@mozz @ninjaphysics @BendingUnit

Yes. The prison population has finally begun to go down somewhat, but the apparatus is still expanding.

You may have heard of the 85-acre Cop City they're trying to build in Atlanta. You probably haven't heard much about the others, like the one near Nashville that will be over 800 acres.

Anyway-- I highly recommend Michelle Alexander's book The New Jim Crow.

She's a civil rights lawyer, but even she thought the complaints about the system were exaggerations, for a very long time. When she finally really connected the dots, it shook her badly. We've been conditioned to accept some truly horrific things as "normal".

violetmadder ,
@violetmadder@kolektiva.social avatar

@mozz @ninjaphysics @BendingUnit

Sure, and your chart doesn't show the longer period where it stayed steady before it suddenly climbed. I just grabbed the first chart I found, there are many ways to visualize it. Either way the backlash after Rodney King didn't slow it down at all.

Yes!

I first encountered her work in this video of a lecture she gave at Chicago University. It kicked my (pretty white and sheltered) worldview right in the gut and I had to sit down for a long minute.

Usually the discourse is funneled into little silos of separate (and polarizing) topics, and this was the first time I really started to grasp how poverty and the lower classes are used as integral parts of a bigger machine, and how the parts relate to each other.

It first occurred to me when I realized that Trump's trials were turning into just one more horrible Reality TV show. TUNE IN NEXT SEASON FOR THE SENTENCING!! dramatic music, closeups of shocked faces, oh the suspense

violetmadder ,
@violetmadder@kolektiva.social avatar

@peachfront @pete @BeAware @glencoe

And the other reason kayfabe fits perfectly, is how resistant people often are to believing it.

What do you MEAN wrestling's "not real"?? Look how much they hate each other! Look at the fighting! The blood!

What do you mean they actually drink together after the show and collect their paychecks from the same oligarchs?? That's ridiculous!

When the rumors really started to break through into common knowledge in wrestling fandom, some people were highly pissed off-- and some people probably STILL don't realize the big match outcomes are scripted.

Arthropods can get humongous. The main reason they don't is they are far too tempting targets for warm-blooded vertebrates.

But about that? Why couldn't an arthropod also be warm-blooded? Maybe some were.

Define "plenty".

Let's say we haven't lost 90% yet, say it's 25%. You wouldn't pull 25% of the tubes and screws out of an engine and still expect it to keep running properly, now would you?

Okay, so natural systems attempt to heal, and organisms reproduce, but just how much damage do you really think it can take? How many keystone species are already gone, causing damage and ripple effects we're not going to fully see or understand for years?

Systems fail in cascades. Between the changes in weather, introduction of invasive species and diseases, habitat loss, toxins-- we are in very, very big trouble.

The trouble is it's really difficult to fully grasp the scale and complexity of the issue, and the usual level of education people have on science and biology falls woefully short.

There's always something more we can do, something to save, reasons to fight. It's strange how many people go from "oh it's not a problem" directly to "oh well nothing we can do" without much problem-solving in between.

I'm volunteering at local nurseries and gardens, and propagating native plants. Hopefully more word will get out about what people can do in their own yards (or neighbors' yards or even road verges) to help.

The primary blame for an atrocity rests squarely on the person who perpetrated it. Every time. Whatever their reasons or excuses, they chose to pull the trigger. The person with power is responsible for what they do with it.

Slaughtering 20 civilians per terrorist is a deliberate choice, for which there is NO excuse. Period. Bombing children is not an issue to quibble over.

Our "freedom" and "democracy" has always been shallow. Different classes ruled by different laws-- certain people get to feel free, while others get stomped.

I think what's happening now is, as climate change cranks up the pressure on us, the power structures are consolidating their hold and preparing for major unrest. They are focused on the resource scramble-- the competitive looting of our natural resources and what blood is left to drain from the lower classes, to be used to secure the nicer resorts they'll camp out in to watch the world burn.

They're getting less and less concerned with maintaining the plausible illusion of peace and security-- that's fading in favor of cultivating fear, insecurity, precarity. Normalizing large-scale violence and injustice, encouraging people to hope for nothing more than the dubious favors of the less horrible oppressors. The velvet glove is fraying as the iron fist prepares to tighten its grip.

  1. Palestinian lives don't matter and are automatically forfeit because of Hamas or whatever,

Here's a rant from Stephen Moore that I strongly agree with...

Something has changed.

I feel no sense of joy using the internet. No curiosity. No intrigue. No excitement. That feeling of tapping into an endless world of possibilities is gone, replaced with a begrudging realization that I’ll have to enter it again and battle to find what I need, trudging through ads, paywalls, vitriol, disinformation, and more.

I’ve come to the realization that I kinda hate the internet now.

It's polluted with ads of every form, type and size — popups, banners, baked-in ads on videos, sponsored posts — and they are now invasive to the point that they have harmed the internet experience. They are everywhere.

Worse, we’re tracked around the internet (thank you cookies) in an attempt to make these ads more ‘relevant’; instead, they’re just creepy and have convinced huge swathes of the internet-using population that their computers are listening to them.

Thanks in part to these ads, most websites are bordering on unusable. Huge areas of white space that are really video ads struggling to load. Then, a chatbot pops up to ask if you need help (and if you engage with them, the advice is the opposite of helpful). Then popup windows offering you shitty PDF guides in return for your email address.

I used to be GOOD at using search engines. I'd sculpt my terms with booleans and quotes, subtly tweaking and ahhhh there it is what I was looking for...

Now, it's everything I WASN'T looking for, flooding in to drown out anything good. Bullshit, and bullshit, and scams, and botshit, and actual human content made by people who give an actual damn about what they're saying just vanishes under the clamoring sewage.

I hate it. I hate it so much.

It was so beautiful, when it actually worked. Now it's lost. Eaten. Cannibalized. Infested. Shambling. Coming for our brains.
