@funn Online content is, sadly, more vulnerable than we think. All it takes is one server to go down, and the entire website/thing goes bust.

Just tried the mobile version of Winamp looking for a better Android music player. The interface looks great tbh, but man, they got no support for wma files and some of the tags are not read correctly (on the songs I own). I know this is not an issue for most of the people, but for me, it's really limiting on the music players I can use on my phone. Sadly, Winamp doesn't fit in this category either. Thank god there is Foobar that supports all these from day 1

@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

Thanks! I'll check it out. Foobar is fine and does a lot of things that I do not see other players doing. What I didn't like was the fact that it has no adaptive icon and there is no way to display the lyrics of a song. Plus that I was looking for something that was following the material design guidelines more.

Edit: just checked it. Seems like it's not properly reading some artist tags, so it cannot find them:

i.postimg.cc/Y249YqV3/Screensh…

Plus, in Foobar, a split album is displayed in both artist's views. Poweramp simply creates a different artist entry, just for the split:

i.postimg.cc/66DQ0xxN/Screensh…

I did not check how an album with multiple discs is displayed, but I still find Foobar's library management capabilities unlike any other's.

I do have to admit that Poweramp has a cool interface though.

search results will become secondary as they push their service

Oh, so they're gonna emphasize less on search results and more onto their half-arsed services that they're axing from time to time? This is so Google of them.

Of course this is for neutrality and not because they actually support Russia. Just like refusing Romania to join Schengen is for neutrality and blocking non-existent migrant routes, and not because they actually support Russia.

The whole proliferation of the AI has been, by far, the worst technological advancement out there. Worse than using personal data for advertising and gathering huge amounts of it.

Stuff like this can happen to anyone and can deceive everybody. We'll no longer be able to trust what we're seeing or hearing at all. And the person being faked will have the most to lose out of this.

RSS and OPML

Can somebody explain me how OPML works for RSS? Are these files usually imported into the RSS reader apps or are they used where they are? @electro1 Which app more exactly? I'm not aware of Friendica having any mobile app. The web version seems more than fine. If, however, you want a dedicated mobile app, then check out Relatica.

Friendica also supports the Mastodon API, so you can also log in with pretty much any Mastodon app.

petrescatraian , (edited )
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@electro1 they do need to update their website a bit fwiw. Friendiqa is not that great at all. But no, that's not an official one either. They do not have any first-party app at all.

Edit: You can also find a help section wherever you might choose to create an account, or a wiki available at wiki.friendi.ca/ with more information.

And if you want to get more familiar with how Friendica works, you can also check out (and share) anubis2814's videos on YouTube on the topic:

I want to settle on a browser independent bookmark solution. What do you suggest?

I got inspired by this article to look into such a solution. I tend to use different browsers on different devices, so using one browser vendor everywhere is not the solution. @GadgeteerZA it's not really that new, it's been around for as long as Mastodon got the first boost back in Autumn 2022 (at least that's when I first heard about it, something like that). There's plenty of other microblogging servers out there, as microblogging is overwhelmingly served via AP and not only. There's even a Nextcloud app for that.

Check out the list below and sort by Social network (micro):

@jeena I only use DeepL to translate and that's it. I also started taking notes in .md files, so that could make for a good use case in the future if there was an AI that I could use without connecting to the internet (e.g. to only let me tell stuff based on the files I got). Otherwise I am pretty reticent on AI. Perhaps I watched too many fiction movies, but I am afraid it will become too sentient and somehow escape the human oversight, thus creating havoc in our lives.

@hedge Wow, this is big. Fedi needs more macroblogging options to compensate for the domination of Mastodon and other microblogging platforms. And also it being another corporate actor like Meta, but smaller, will create the incentive for Meta to play more fairly in the long run and not EEE the Fediverse with Threads, just like it did with XMPP by integrating it under Facebook almost a decade ago. This is exactly what we need to become and stay mainstream.

Israel Attack on Iran Is What World War III Looks Like ( theintercept.com )

But this, in fact, is what actual war looks like these days: Sometimes it’s a volley of 300 missiles and drones, and sometimes it is lean, targeted, and carried out covertly. Gone are the days of vast conquering armies and conventional military confrontations between two parties. So long as experts, the government, and the...

Apple pulls WhatsApp, Threads and Signal from app store in China ( www.washingtonpost.com )

@Stillhart yea, you can, but that means trusting the third party providing the apk. Besides that, China also has a big power over the internet. They could outright block the apps from working altogether only by cutting the connection. Especially with Threads and WhatsApp where you cannot choose any proxy within the app.

In fact, I think they already did it.

    @ElCanut geee, I wonder how did they make Microsoft Access.

    petrescatraian ,
    @petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

    @sonori the problem is that Discord tried to mix social media with Instant Messaging. This is not something that's working well. On one of them, you just talk to people, ask them about stuff and whatnot (this is why it is also called direct messaging). On other, you want to have stuff that is rather more easily accessible and has various other social functions - and it is also designed around it.

    You also have a place where you can centralize all discussion (i.e. the feed) so you can at least get an idea of what is going on.

    Discord (as a messaging app, primarily) is totally unfit for these tasks.
