LordCrom ,

Seeing the windows 3.1 interface took me back to a much happier time.

Here in Florida, I think the bubble finally hit the house flipping limit. At least 5 homes on my block were sold for 600k or more, bought by people who painted, tiled, and made the houses all white inside in order to flip them. All 5 were relisted again within 3 months for 700k and up. 2 sold, were worked on, then up for sale for 100k o er the original price. Now all 5 homes are empty....on sale for 700 to 850k... All by fucking house flippers.

I'm not crying for them.

They are the ones stuck with the 16k per year propert tax bill. Who the fuck can afford an 800k home in this middle class area? Glad I bought when prices were under 200k. My taxes are reasonable, even if my insurance isn't anymore

LordCrom ,

I have a rack in my garage.

My advice, keep it simple, keep it virtual.

I dumpster dove for hardware and run proxmox on hosts. Not even clustered, just simple stand alone proxmox hosts. Connect to my Synology storage device and done.

I run next cloud for webDav contacts and calendar (fuck Google), it does photo and do. Storage. The next client is free from F-Droid for Android and works on debian desktops like a charm.

I run Minecraft server

I run home automation server

I run a media server.

Proxmox backs everything up on schedule

All I need to do is get off-site backup setup for Synology important data and I'm all set.

It's really not as hard as you think if you keep it simple

LordCrom ,

I think it's actually

The law of the jungle

LordCrom ,

Ooooo. Can't wait till a hurricane is coming and they raise the price of water and canned food.

I wonder how much price gouging will be permitted. If they can raise the price of water when it's hot then could they raise it "just enough" to not get in trouble with the state when a hurricane is coming

LordCrom ,

Government says there's no more draft... Just a registry for boys who could be drafted...not that it's gonna happen.

So rest assured, there's no more draft, until Congress implements a new draft

LordCrom ,

So a huge, chaotic, CGI, seizure inducing battle of multiple armies....

What they don't get, Gladiator was great. It told a story and that was the end of it.

This is so, just so.... Desperate? Clueless?

Its like someone pitching an ET pt 2... They don't understand that the story is over. We want stories, not CGI armies or monsters.

...unless it's Godzilla, I could always use more Godzilla

LordCrom ,

Property hoarding could be solved by quadrupling propert taxes on any home that isn't a primary residence of the property owner.

LordCrom ,

That's like 1 hour of profits? Ooooo. They're scared now.

‘Will I ever retire?’: millennials wonder what’s on the other side of middle age ( www.theguardian.com )

Claire*, 42, was always told: “Follow your dreams and the money will follow.” So that’s what she did. At 24, she opened a retail store with a friend in downtown Ottawa, Canada. She’d managed to save enough from a part-time government job during university to start the business without taking out a loan....

LordCrom ,

Hell. Gen X also are worried about retirement.

Will social security be here in 15 years? My 401k has not kept up at all.... Everything today costs soooooooo much there's no real room for saving.

LordCrom ,

At this point, I'm still looking at working till the day I die.

LordCrom ,

I was thinking the same .... And what is this council about? Doubt the Vatican gave a thumbs up to this.

LordCrom ,

During the Obamacare debates, we were sooooo close to getting a public option....you could taste it. But powers that be didn't want to introduce Medicare as an option because it would upset the status quo and for profit health care aystem

LordCrom ,

Yes, it was exactly that.

LordCrom ,

And don't forget about separating parents from children, holding illegal immigrants in overcrowded cells made from chain link fences inside buildings.... They are America's version of the Show me your papers patrol.

LordCrom ,

Iirc, either the Colbert report or John Oliver did a story on Sinclair owned stations and how anchors were forced to read prepared stories that were obviously right leaning propaganda.

LordCrom ,

I've been to Disney in Orlando dozens of times growing up. Haven't been there for 10 years or so....so took a few days and went to the park.

Wow, sooooo many people, like sooooo many people you can't walk down the paths without doing the New York shoulder to get through. I didn't know about the phone thing.... It's a new smartphone system where you reserve spots in rides at certain times, but all reservations are gone 5 min after opening time for the app. The entire park was filled with people staring at their phones trying to get in on a canceled reservation. Well I didn't know about this....so I was in the stand by lines. 1 to 2 hours per ride and a non stop stream of fast pass people kept walking right in. The New Tron ride was fast pass only.

All day there and I think we got on 4 rides. Peter Pan standby was 3 hours long.

For all the money paid to get in, the crowds, the stupid new smartphone thing.... I will never go back to Disney. Let the stupid international tourists have it.

Cape Canaveral visitor center was sooo much better.

LordCrom ,

I see the difference as
Would is indicative of intent. E.g. would you drink coffee
Could us indicative of ability. E.g. could you drink coffee

And this we get the best ending lyric from Alice in Chains..."if I would, could you ?"

LordCrom ,

No lie. For 6 days straight it was at or over 105 F outside. My air could barely keep the indoors at 80 F and my bill was 600 for the month of high heat. I have insulation and attic vents and all that.... It's just so hot outside you can't stand it.

LordCrom ,

But aren't blackberries good to grow? My market charges like $8 for a tiny box of them

LordCrom ,

I bought a sager laptop, matching the models that system76 uses. Loaded pop os and away I go.

So far, very stable. I am forced to use Nvidia performance mode if I want an external monitor which is slightly annoying, but I can reboot into normal mode when on battery.

Its the poor battery usage that irks me. The battery life gets me 90 min of use, so not great.

I got steam for some gaming, guitarix and ardour for music, libre office, IDE and git tools all good to go.

Worth it

LordCrom ,

I'm sure MAGA water will be at $7 per bottle

LordCrom ,

Sounds like another thing to be racist about for typical dumb fuck populations.

Costco Working on Ad Network to Sell Its Shoppers' Data, Report Says ( gizmodo.com )

Costco is the perfect place to shop whenever you need a 3-pound tub of pretzels and four gallons of mayonnaise. Or, perhaps more famously, those $1.50 hot dog combos. But now those purchases will help the retailer target you with ads, according to a report from Morning Brew Thursday.Read more...

LordCrom ,

I thought they were already doing this years ago

LordCrom ,

This was done in the movie 'Master and Commander' also.

LordCrom ,

In Florida, anything under 78 F and 50% humidity is just lovely

LordCrom ,

What the government should do is make solar legal to install everywhere without hurdles. In Florida, you can't get windstorm insurance if you have panels on the roof .... Thanks for that FPL, you fuckers. And FPL also implemented a requirement for a million dollar policy if you get solar installed to your house and still maintain a connection to the power grid.

Several PA House Republicans boo officers who defended Capitol on Jan. 6 | Harry Dunn and Aquilino Gonell were invited to PA’s House of Representatives — but several GOP lawmakers booed and walked out ( wapo.st )

“I heard some hissing and I saw about eight to 10 of my Republican colleagues walk out angrily as they were announced as police officers from the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6,” state Rep. Arvind Venkat (D) said in a phone interview Thursday. “I was shocked and appalled,” he added. According to Venkat, the commotion lasted...

LordCrom ,

Name the GOP cowards that were booing.

Is it possible to "manage up" on customer expectations? Or am I doomed to unreasonable SLAs? (Database as a Service Company)

I'm just so exhausted these days. We have formal SLA's, but its not like they're ever followed. After all, Customer X needs to be notified within 5 minutes of any anomalous events in their cluster, and Customer Y is our biggest customer, so we give them the white glove treatment....

LordCrom ,

Ive managed an SRE team. I see 3 issues in your story.

  1. Upper MGMT and sales need to establish SLA and notification policy. Does the customer want to be notified of a high CPU over 5 min, or do they want notification of a slow down. If it's the latter, then you are alerting on the wrong metric. Someone needs to set expectations. If the customer wants and pays for any anomaly, well then it's your job to report it.

  2. SRE should make sense out of metrics. If all you do is stare at dashboards, then you are OPS, not SRE. SRE should setup and gather metrics and present them in ways meaningful to Dev and ops.

  3. If you are SRE, then man up and tell your manager what SREs should be doing and show some kind of idea or plan to push your monitori g forward. Be the Lead SRE if no one else is doing it.

About to finish:
"How to Make an Apple Pie from Scratch"

Step 1: invent the universe

LordCrom ,

It's excellent. Basically a history of particle physics.

LordCrom ,

Next cloud all the way. I run it in my garage and I grab the free Android app from fdroid

LordCrom ,

Went there recently, plain bean burrito used to cost me 1.29...now it's 2.85 AND they now charge extra .20 if you want extra onions.

Crazy prices now.

I miss Taco Viva

Can I refuse MS Authenticator?

So my company decided to migrate office suite and email etc to Microsoft365. Whatever. But for 2FA login they decided to disable the option to choose "any authenticator" and force Microsoft Authenticator on the (private) phones of both employees and volunteers. Is there any valid reason why they would do this, like it's...

LordCrom ,

Maintain a veil of separation between personal and business. Just say you can't install it.

They must then provide you with needed hardware.

Just say you don't have a smartphone....you have a flip phone...doesn't matter.

And don't fall for the argument that companies require ties also, they can require cell phones..... Not at all same thing.

LordCrom ,

Don't mix business and personal.

Don't Install any corp app on a personal phone. No matter what.

LordCrom ,

If information is ever subject of a subpoena, your phone could be seized as evidence.... OS separation doesn't matter. Just like you wouldn't check corporate email or keep corp documents on your personal laptop...because your laptop could be seized for any corp legal action

LordCrom ,

File this one under "No shit, Sherlock"

LordCrom ,

Fucking disgusting.
That's not proper procedure, that's assault.
I would totally back that crowd if they swarmed in and beat the shit out of those cops after seeing that.

LordCrom ,

I hope they give the moderator power to cut off mics ....

But part of me thinks that networks want Trump to run his mouth because a shit show like that brings viewers

LordCrom ,

Number 1, i don't want to have my face scanned by the bazillion different cameras all over the place.

Number 2, these people are citing campus protests as the reason why masks should be MORE illegal. They want to identify legal protesters for what reason? Seems fishy

LordCrom ,

Just like in bush v gore, Supreme Court may say immunity is allowed, but only for this 1 case.

LordCrom ,

Any Jesus movie....
"Father, Why have you abandoned me? You piece of Shit"

LordCrom ,

"Supreme Court will hear a case regarding whether the former president could attempt to overturn a national election and not face criminal charges. "

If they allow this for Trump, then the peaceful handover of power is done in the US as every President can stage his own insurrection and attempt to maintain power without it being treason. An insurrection every 4 years will be the norm and we become a banana Republic with nukes

LordCrom ,

Don't be blind.... Every President gets more money for rich people in some way or another. Some just also try to help the little man sometimes.

All presidents kinda suck....you can't get to that level of power without some compromise of character
