The changing feel lemmy.ca’s front page

Back when I joined lemmy.ca, the front page was full of bicycles, city/province-specific community posts, and others like woodworking This morning, four or five of the front page posts were making fun of some crazy bikini lady(?). I read their “read this first” post and understand why they’re doing what they’re doing,...

I saw that community once when it was first created. Baffling there is so much traffic there now. Anyway, blocked it, problem solved.

Because, and I have no idea why so many people don’t get this, you’re supposed to signal you’re going to turn, then slow down, then turn. That’s how you safely let anyone behind you know you’re going to do that.

Damn right. I was taught to give a minimum 3 blinks before turning. That also gives you time to look around for other vehicles/pedestrians before committing to the turn.

Bog - horror, but it was kind of funny due to how cheesy it was

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm - made me lol several times. Better than I expected

Stopmotion - kinda disturbing, in a good psychological thriller type of way

How do you define "a loving relationship"? Do you only want answers from people who are happy with their relationships 100% of the time?

What kind of monsters downvoted this? They must be grumpy because they didn't get breakfast.

Movie Trailers Are Killing Movies ( www.gamespot.com )

A great movie trailer can single handedly turn a movie into a success story--like that genius Cloverfield trailer in 2007 that didn't say what the title of the movie was. But it's more common these days, I'd argue, for a trailer to have the opposite impact. A generic trailer can so thoroughly dampen hype for a film that...

I don't care if they are "gaming" specific, but I like PCs because they are more customizable /upgradeable

Possession (1981) was a great movie. I hope they do it justice

Guitar is hard. It takes months or years of practice to even develop the finger strength and speed to play some things. I always had fun learning in my early teens, because I wanted to, even though I was terrible. Then after 2 or so years of playing every day it became really fun and I was able to get the ideas from my imagination to my fingers.

It's like a lot of things worth learning - you have to really want it, and it's never as easy as it appears.

I didn't graduate with my class in high school because I was 1 credit short. Not giving a fuck and home life. I moved out as soon as I turned 18 and finished that last credit. Eventually did some college programs and crushed them because I was interested and in a much better place mentally.

Sit cross-legged. I can do it for maybe 10 seconds max, but it's just so uncomfortable. Never was able to even as a kid. I think I'm just not flexible at all.

Large animals hunting me. Usually big cats (lions, tigers, jaguars, not house cats). But the last few times I remember these types of dreams I have been safe inside some structure, with just the threat they will find a way through a door or window.

At the risk of coming across as insensitive, I really wonder what happened in this guy's life leading up to this. He lived through the "easy times" where boomers were buying houses on a single income, in fact he had a 10 year head start on them. The article says he only receives $1,100 from social security - so does he have $0 savings / investments at 90 years old? Genuinely curious, not taking a shit on him - this will be me at 90 too, if I last that long.

You can try to paint me as a victim blamer all you want. I tried to make it clear that I legitimately wonder. I empathize with his situation, and I bet he would be open to share his stories, cautionary or otherwise, and not act like you are.

Yeah true. It said he was an air force veteran. The world is a scary place.

Something about my work...just feels "off"?

I work in security at a northern michigan ski/golf resort. The resort spans 2 properties and has a combined total of roughly 3000 acres. As you might expect, it can be a tough job at times, with drunks, noise complaints, safety issues, etc but wtf do you do when your job is mostly just tough for simply feeling "creepy"? There's...

@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Are you familiar with the term phrogging? Is it possible someone is secretly living at the resort and that was what you heard? Is there anything preventing random people from sneaking in at night?

    I think morbid curiosity is not weird, people rubberneck at car accidents. What you are describing sounds like it is going beyond a passing interest though, and the further you go down that rabbit hole, the weirder it will be.

    Since you're asking, it might be a good idea to talk to a professional. You might also consider getting into something like an extreme sport.

    I can't stand Queen, even though I have respect for their skill. (my highschool had an "arts program" and they bombarded us with musicals, Queen, and some sort of Queen musical)

    NIN does nothing for me, and I've tried several albums and owned one. It's just.. nothing soup.

    95% of music in any genre is garbage, but you can find the 5% gems if you go looking for it.

    What do you mean men are growing beards "again"? I haven't noticed any trend between clean shaven / bearded. Some do, some don't.

    How should I change my polite behavior to be more accommodating?

    My parents raised me to always say "yes sir" and "no ma'am", and I automatically say it to service workers and just about anyone with whom I'm not close that I interact with. I noticed recently that I had misgendered a cashier when saying something like "no thank you, ma'am" based on their appearing AFAB, but on a future visit...

    eezeebee ,
    @eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

    Yes please and no thank you

    eezeebee ,
    @eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

    To me, please and thank you are kind of the poster children for politeness. Like you can't be polite without them.

    Btw are you in the US? I'm in Canada and I don't think I've ever heard anyone say yes sir/no ma'am sincerely.
