@Nonilex
Ignopring that the money not going to paying the excessive interest will be going into the local economies, as people have money available to buy furniture or better housing.
President #Biden on Tues will announce sweeping new #protections for hundreds of thousands of #immigrants who have been living in the #UnitedStates illegally for years but are married to American #citizens.
#POTUS will detail the policy at the WH on Tues while marking the 12-yr anniversary of #DACA which protects people who came to the US as children from #deportation.
@Nonilex I remember that in December 2016 scientists were rushing to copy and preserve federal climate data before Trump took office. It was a frightening time.
Glad that federal agencies are preparing for the worst.
@Nonilex Japan has had something similar in their policy discussions since before the primaries started—referred to as “moshitora,” a contraction of a phrase literally meaning “if Trump.”
“This is not a return to #Trump,” he said. “There is no comparison.” #Biden’s plan, which went into effect on Wed, does limit most #asylum claims for #immigrants crossing between ports of entry, until the daily avg of migrant arrests falls & stays below certain thresholds.
But Clemens pointed out that migrants could still schedule appts to appear at #border posts, or apply under a separate, special admissions prgm the Biden Admin set up for residents of #Cuba, #Haiti, #Nicaragua, & #Venezuela.
Nevertheless, he & Peri both agreed that there is an urgent need to accompany the new #policy w/more legal-entry options for immigrants who are trying to cross the southern border. “We can easily absorb these people, & the #economy needs them,” Peri said. Clemens also argued that expanding #legal channels is necessary to #secure the #border: “Just denying access is very likely to encourage more clandestine entry. It may be completely ineffective.”
“…when he gets to be president, not only is he gonna secure the #border, he’s going to #deport hundreds of thousands of people here illegally. And if you wanna shut down illegal #immigration, those coming need to see an outflow by the tens & hundreds of thousands. That will deter. The only #policy change that will work is to have #MassDeportations.”
Try as I might... to not, I do find pleasure in watching Graham grovel hoping for a few drops of whatever drizzles from #Trump's gluteal drapes. If John McCain were alive today, he'd be spinning in his grave... or swirling in his urn, depending.
A streak of record-setting #heat that began last summer has now persisted for an entire year across the globe, researchers announced Wed, pushing #Earth closer to a dangerous threshold that the #world’s nations had pledged not to cross.
Temperatures surpassed the 1.5°C #warming threshold over the past year, & scientists warn they will again soon.
The #Biden admin has a plan to shut down the #border. But it needs #Mexico's help.
The admin hopes to unveil a series of executive actions that President Biden can sign but will likely have to wait for the outcome of Mexico's June 2 presidential #election.
Election years are strange. The #Biden campaign sees #immigration as an issue, & #Republicans are making it worse by refusing to pass #legislation IN ORDER TO KEEP IT AN ISSUE w/o a Democrat solution to campaign on to their uninformed electorate.
Biden’s policies are more humane, he doesn’t use family separation or detention concentration camps like #Trump among other things.
Still, #ClimateChange has drastically increased #immigration of #climate-displaced people so the numbers of immigrants are actually higher than before, but it isn’t down to which party is in power.
The US legal system may be excruciatingly long and complicated 😩 with lots of appeals so that when a final verdict of conviction will be reached, the country may be suffocated, burnt to the ground and drowned in poisonous mirk....
But that's no reason Not to do it.
It could also be a part of the team work by #Policy#Politicians#Media and #WeThePeople ...
"Michigan wants fossil fuel companies to pay for climate change damages"
by Izzy Ross for Grist
Quotes:
"Harms include severe weather, crop failures, and economic hits from lack of ice and snow."
"Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Thursday that she plans to sue fossil fuel companies for knowingly contributing to climate change, harming the state’s economy and ways of life.
“It’s long past time that we step up and hold the fossil fuel companies that are responsible for all these damages accountable,” she said."
"The department is asking outside lawyers to submit proposals to help with the case, which Nessel said could potentially bring billions to the state to address damages from climate change."
"....into the extensive efforts undertaken by fossil fuel companies to deceive the public and investors about their knowledge of the effects of their products on climate change and to undermine efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions.”
"Nessel said the state has successfully pursued similar legal efforts in the past, including against the opioid industry and chemical manufacturers that produce PFAS."

Migrant crossings on the #US - #Mexico#border have dropped significantly in the first 3 months of the year, acc/to official figures, from a peak of 301,981 in Dec to under 200,000 a month from Jan - Mar. That could ease political pressure on #POTUS#Biden, but #Republicans are likely to continue attacking him by pointing out that border crossings remain relatively high.
#Trump at a rally in Waukesha, #Wisconsin, again contended without evidence that the #protests at college campuses over the #war in #Gaza were an effort by the left to distract attention from the surge of migrants at the #border. “Some people are saying they do the colleges so they can get your eyes off the border,” he said, repeating an assertion that he made on social media last night.
#Freedom, #justice, #equality, and #opportunity are #values the majority of #Americans can agree on. The #GOP as it is incarnated now so narrows the scope of applicability as to make their positions utter falsehoods for large groups of people. The majority can see through their #lies, but adherents see #mendacity as the cost of doing business. But at least they believe what they profess and the means to get there. #Democrats on the other hand, are facing a crisis of #legitimacy. The #contradictions between #democratic values and #foreign_policy have been laid bare. #Israel/Gaza, the #TikTok ban, and the heavy-handed #police response to campus #demonstrations have shown that democratic values will be tossed aside the moment they conflict with #policy goals and manufactured #consensus. It's not that people don't #believe in the values Democrats profess; it's that people don't believe that Democrats believe in these values.
