Le 18 juin, la cour d’appel de Paris a jugé recevables deux actions en #justice lancées par des associations à l’encontre de ces fleurons industriels français. Cette décision met fin à de longs débats procéduraux qui freinaient la mise en œuvre du #DevoirDeVigilance des entreprises.
There's a truly comforting sociopathy snuggled inside capitalism ideology: if markets are systems for identifying and rewarding virtue, ability and value, then anyone who's failing in the system is actually unworthy, not unlucky; and that means the winners are not just lucky (and certainly not merely selfish), but actually the best and they owe nothing to their social inferiors apart from what their own charitable impulses dictate.
Certainly, we don't hear much about the "moral hazard" of allowing the Sackler opioid family to keep as much as ten billion dollars in the family's offshore accounts while walking away from the victims of their drug-pushing empire, no matter what bizarre tricks they deploy in pulling off the stunt:

A federal bankruptcy judge in Texas has decided that Jones must sell off his personal assets through a Chpt 7 liquidation in order to pay families nearly $1.5B in #damages for spreading #lies that the 2012 #SchoolShooting never happened.
#PHXPD routinely uses excessive force & discriminates against #Black, #Hispanic [#Latino] & #NativeAmerican [#indigenous] people, part of a broad pattern of unconstitutional policing in America. #Justice investigators also found that the PHXPD violates the rights of the #homeless, improperly arresting them & destroying their #property.
#House Speaker #MikeJohnson has a tendency to think that when things go bad for his party, it’s the product of gross legislative mismanagement, judicial #weaponization, & a vast executive #conspiracy. But when his party wants to do something, it’s because #justice is swift & everything is proceeding according to plan. #HouseRepublicans’ efforts to hold AG #MerrickGarland are no exception to this trend.
The #Project2025 plan calls for a sweeping reorganization of the executive branch, one that would concentrate more #power in #Trump’s hands. At the #EPA, it recommends eliminating the office of #environmental#justice, which was created in 2022 to address the #pollution that disproportionately harms poor & minority communities.
Many #Trump allies had been secretly rooting for an #acquittal. The talking points wrote themselves: It would have been yet more evidence that the #UnitedStates#justice system was rigged in favor of #Bidens & against Trumps. Tues’s #guilty#verdict was inconvenient to that narrative.
Even more valuable would have been the #fundraising potential.
A person w/knowledge of the #Trump camp’s #fundraising plans …said there had been discussions about how much an #acquittal would help Trump, potentially raising tens of millions of additional dollars as they planned to cite it as more evidence the #justice system was rigged. After Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts, his campaign raised record sums online, & some of his advisers recognized that an acquittal of #Biden’s son had the potential to raise Trump far more cash than a #conviction.
Prominent #Republicans, incl those in the #Trump campaign, immediately minimized the 3 felony gun charges, complaining that the charges steered attention away from unspecified #crimes that they claimed President #Biden has committed & a #justice system that they insisted was still very much two-tiered.
It spoke volumes that the first reaction from the Trump camp did not come directly from Trump himself, who still hadn’t posted about the verdict hrs after it landed.
#MerrickGarland: Unfounded attacks on the #Justice Dept must end #ConspiracyTheories, falsehoods & threats of #violence against #DOJ personnel are not normal. Last wk, a California man was convicted of threatening to bomb an #FBI field office where hundreds of agents & other employees work. In one of his #threats to the FBI, the man wrote: “I can go on a mass murder spree. In fact, it would be very explainable by your actions.”
It's a sad day for the Biden family, which like so many families has had to struggle with the addiction of a family member. But it's a good day for the rule of law. #SCOTUS Justice #Alito spoke candidly about the ideological battle between the left & the right—discussing the difficulty of living “peacefully" w/ideological opponents in the face of "fundamental" differences that "can't be compromised." He endorsed…a necessary fight to “return our country to a place of godliness."

Gabby Petito went missing in the summer of 2021 and was later found to have been murdered by her fiancé. So #Republican-generated claims about “fraudulent voter registration,” “mail-in ballot fraud,” &…the various targets of Trump’s #BigLie claims…are “appropriately investigated & prosecuted.”

#StephenMiller, a fmr snr adviser to #Trump [& pure concentrated evil] who still helps guide his thinking on policy, blared out a directive on #FoxNews after a jury found Trump #guilty of falsifying financial records to cover up… his 2016 [#ElectionInterference]. Miller posed a series of questions to Republicans at every level, including local DAs.
“Is every House cmte controlled by #Republicans [ab]using its subpoena power in every way it needs to right now?” #StephenMiller demanded. “Is every Republican DA starting every investigation they need to right now?”
“Every facet of #Republican Party #politics & #power has to be used right now to go toe-to-toe w/Marxism & beat these Communists,” Miller said, using the catchall slurs #Trump allies routinely use against #Democrats.

#Trump has made #payback for opponents central to his campaign, at one point declaring to a crowd: “I am your #retribution.” In private, has told advisers & friends that he wants his #DOJ to investigate specific fmr aides & allies who are now critical of him. And he has promised to appoint a special prosecutor to scrutinize #Biden & his family.
#MikeJohnson vowed to use House oversight powers while cutting funds in the #government appropriations process & taking other unspecified #legislative measures.
“We’re going to do everything we can, everything within our scope of our responsibility in the Congress, to address it appropriately,” Johnson said at his weekly news conference afterward.
One of #Trump’s staunchest allies is readying a more aggressive approach. Rep #MarjorieTaylorGreene (R-Ga.) has threatened to file a resolution before the week’s end to #impeach President #Biden. Greene left a Tues meeting w/ #MikeJohnson demanding “in the loudest most possible way” that he allow the #House a vote on removing Biden or she will force such a vote.
