Well now I can finally share - I just started my first day as a federal scientist at NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory.

I'll be continuing research on improving our understanding of climate prediction and projection, especially with data-driven approaches for high-impact extremes.

Hmm, slug trap had (finally!!) caught some slugs last night... but somebody (ie the local wood rat) apparently went and fished out all the dead slugs in the beer and ate them last night.

RECIPE FOR BEER MARINATED SLUGS

Preparation time:
2 to 3 days

Ingredients:

  1. Beer (any beer will do, cheap beer is fine)
  2. Garden slugs

Procedure:

  1. Place a container in your garden, and fill it with cheap beer. Any beer will do, but cheap beer will be fine. Do not be alarmed if a wood rat drinks most of the beer the first two nights.
  2. At some point, slugs will crawl into the container by themselves! You may see dozens and dozens of slugs, but only catch one or two at a time.
  3. Once slugs start falling in, you will see a half dozen that will self marinate themselves in the beer. This is okay.
  4. Give a day, and then you can fish out the well marinated slugs.

@futurebird @alec Most of the gun owners I know are highly paranoid--and afraid. (not all, but enough to worry you). They are definitely sold something to "make you feel safer" even if they actually add a lot of risks.

Told the tree crew down the street I'd take the chipped trees they are working on today as mulch (due for a refresh). Going to get a full load, I think. 😂

*Free local mulch -- where you are able to inspect the trees being mulched is FAR better than 1. imported mulch which might have bugs, 2. random trees from tree crews, which may include diseased trees, 3. Commercial mulch imported across the country which also might have pests and 4. far better than retail wood mulch which costs $3.33 for a 2 cubic feet bag (!!!!!).. and 5. WAY, WAY superior to toxic rubber mulch

Mulch Moving Tip: After day one, it might be advisable to wear a mask (N95 or similar) while spreading this, because of a large amount of Aspergillis mold that tends to develop as it starts to compost...     @alienghic LOL yeah he has Portland and Spokane in there (heat dome!) and he has Vermont and Maine as "safe" from a litany of climate risks, LOL. I like to tell people that you can run but you can't hide! (I hope I haven't caused too many people to uproot themselves from current climate disaster areas elsewhere... but I know that is the case for some, for sure.)

    @h2onolan The best book I have read so far on the topic -- far off the mainstream, mind you -- is Building Power While The Lights Are Out: Disasters, Mutual Aid, and Dual Power -- which is very grass roots/community/anti-government disaster response. I wonder if buying it gets you on some government "troublemaker" watch list, though, LOL.

    It addresses disasters and climate change from those most affected by it -- the disadvantaged, poor, and overlooked -- who turn to each other instead of government organizations and NGOs for support. (and very fairly points out many of the failings I've seen in our official approach to disasters)

    Well, another beekeeper totally screwed up a swarm capture at our local elementary school. The vacuumed up the bees instead of boxing them up and waiting until evening. Thus leaving half the swarm wondering where the queen went, and not solving the problem at all. I was called by one of the teachers... nothing I could do. Although most of the bees crawled into my bag of bee gear and I took them home. #beekeeping #failure

    @futurebird @artemesia Hmm, I'm curious if bees do some similar screening. They will accept workers into a hive, but NOT guard bees or raiders.
