Much warmer last night and a few more came out to play. Finally, my first muppet-coloured ELEPHANT HAWK-MOTH and a delicate (if slightly battered) SWALLOW-TAILED of 2024 ... and just for good measure, a SPECTACLE with the biggest mohican you've ever seen on a moth hilariously clearing for take-off...

Overhead shot of a large, delicate, flat tissue paper moth in very pale lemon. It looks very delicate. It has a furry head with a bald patch where it is ageing. The forewings are triangular with the apex meeting at the head, so one side of the triangle appears like a top wing edge. The forewings are shorter than the hindwings, so the hindwings poke out very visibly beneath. Each have a point with two black dots so that it resembles a bird face but the effect is to create a very, very, shallow fork of the wing like a swallow's tail. The forewings have two orange brown stripes stretching from one side of the triangular wing to the other, but because the apex is at the head, the stripes look vertical. In between each stripe is a very short stripe of the same colour, barely a third of the length.
Face on shot of a spectacle moth on an egg box hump. Its wings behind are fuzzy as they flap ready for take-off. It has a distinct light brown marking on its darker forehead that resemble a pair of spectacles, above which, centrally is a ginger brown mohican that sticks up. Two antennae stretch horizontally a bit like a wiry moustache. Overall a quirky appearance.

Well, well, well, my froggy friends coming out in full force just in time for froggy Friday. They normally just like hiding between the plants.

Same frog but this time we see it from behind.

Dad's has provided me with many opportunities for over the years, even when he was no longer able to tend to it. Pics here from 2016 to earlier this year, clockwise from top left: Common , , Seven-spot , and Brimstone .

A European Robin perched on top of a globe-shaped garden light. This is a juvenile, almost in full adult plumage (so he or she has a brown cap, back, wings and tail, orangey-red on the face and chest and a whitish belly) but the feathers are little 'scruffy' in places, especially around the head, where the transition between young and adult feathers has not been fully completed.
A male Brimstone butterfly on Sweet Pea flowers. The Butterfly's wings, held closed together above the body, are a bright greenish-yellow colour, with pointed corners giving a leaf-like shape, and with noticeable veins plus a single, small brown mark in the middle of each one. The underside of the furry body, and the legs, are also yellow, while the top of the head, the eyes and the antennae are shades of brown. The Sweet Pea flowers are a pinkish purple, with paler patches.
A Seven-spot ladybird (or Ladybug) on a pale green leaf. This is a small, rotund beetle with shiny red wing cases, each case bearing three black botches, with a seventh black mark spread across both close to where the abdomen meets the thorax. The thorax is black with some white markings and small head is black, with short brown antennae. The legs, also short, are black.

Today in: how to make more manual labor for yourself.

Told the tree crew down the street I'd take the chipped trees they are working on today as mulch (due for a refresh). Going to get a full load, I think. 😂

Not like I don't get enough exercise as is...

I'd like a giant load of mulch for free,
Something I've done before you see,
Keeps down weeds, keeps the garden cool
Leaves water in the soil, that's the rule

Now, the only problem with this plan today
Is moving mulch is hard, I must say
It's great and saves you money
But you'll pay in sore muscles and back, sonny

Here's the first leaf-veined slug we've ever seen in our NZ suburban garden. It's the 404th species of invertebrate we've now found in our garden, after over ten years of looking for such things. My wife found it under an old wood heap (over the fence from where our chickens forage).

NZ leaf-veined slugs all eat fungi, and are a welcome addition to gardens, unlike the introduced European slugs and snails that eat NZers vegetables.

A photo looking face-on at a yellow leaf-veined slug crawling across a hand (if slugs "crawl"—more of a "slime").

I think this is a band-winged dragonlet (Erythrodiplax umbrata), perched on the tip of one of our obedience plants in the front garden yesterday evening.
