    A common scene this time of year along the trail at Recreation Area.

    In fact, I believe this is my third year in a row for catching a photo of a dickcissel singing its heart out atop a color-coordinated mullein inflorescence.

Its beak is opened in song and its weight bends the mullein spike to the left. Based on its coloring this may be a female of the species. This bird has grey abdomen feathers, brown wings, back, and tail feathers with dark bars and mottling, a bright yellow chest with grey on either side, a white neck with a slim black outline, a grey cap with a yellow mask across the eyes, a grey cheek with a yellow patch on the lower cheek, dark eyes, a silver-grey beak, and brown legs and feet. This variety of mullein produces a flower spike that towers above the plant. The flowers have five yellow, overlapping petals that form a shallow cup around the yellow center.

    A gold and purple iris in my friend's garden. I never really paid attention to iris beards before and didn't realize they has such amazing color patterns.

    This flowering bush is along a route to a friend's house. It's populated by a small flock of house sparrows pretty much yr round & I catch a lot of sparrow pics there. Don't know that I've seen it in bloom before but appears to be a type of spiraea.

    One of those flowering shrubs that has tiny little white flowers that look lovely but are far more delicate & intricate when you take a closer look.

The clouds are somewhat thin and the sun is very bright and forms a bright quarter disk in the clouds in the upper right frame. The seed head is highlighted from behind creating bright highlights around the circumference of the fuzzy head and creating dark shadows in the seed head center where the dark, heavily textured seeds radiate from from the flower head. A great deal of the photo is in shades of grey except for the bloom's green sepals and stem and subtle rainbow colors where the sunlight is refracted by the fuzzy exterior which is made up of fine filaments.

Cedar waxwings have tan feathers, black beaks, dark eyes surrounded by a black mask, a crest that can be raised and lowered, and brown legs and feet. Waxwings have red "wax" on the tips of some of its wing feathers and yellow wax on the tips of its tail feathers. The "wax" varies by bird and bird age and is caused by the accumulation of organic pigments that come from its mostly fruit diet.

    Went out to feed the birds this a.m. & saw something "mounted" to a back porch support beam. Closer inspection revealed it was a very large #moth. My ID app suggests Polyphemus moth (Antheraea polyphemus) with an average wingspan of 6". It was just chilling during the a.m. storms. I hoped it would open up but it just stayed motionless. It was quite dark so the pics aren't the best. Antennae are very cool!

This species of chipmunk has a grey back and brown sides that are separated by stripes that start at the shoulder and extend down to the tail. There are three stripes and the stripe pattern is black on top of cream on top of black. This species has a grey-brown tail, a white belly, chest, and neck, large ears, large, dark eyes, round ears, a grey cap, and a typical rodent muzzle. This species also also has a striped mask that starts in front of the eyes and extends to the ears. The stripe pattern is cream on top of dark brown on top of cream with the eye located in the brown stripe.

    Got the hummingbird feeder up other day for early arrivals. This is my 3rd yr w/ one.

    Not positive but I'm assuming this is a female ruby-throated. Not sure if it's the same bird but I've had the same type of female visit for the past 2 yrs.

    Was very busy w/ the garden last yr & wasn't able to get a any good pics the few times I had the camera in hand. So we just enjoyed each other's company.

    My ground phlox (possibly Phlox subulata/moss phlox) has achieved blanket status.

    I'm a sucker for mass blooms. A friend of mine has large swaths of this phlox & was kind enough to borrow me a cup 2 yrs ago. A cup that was 1.5' x 2' chunk that I then plopped down in a 1.5' x 2' space.

    Easy peasy phlox carpet squee-sy.

    Photograph of a mass bloom of purple ground phlox (moss phlox seems likely). This variety of phlox is low to the ground and slowly "creeps" along the ground. The plant has moss-like foliage. The flowers have five, heart-shaped, pale purple feathers that radiate from a narrow central cone. Each petal has two, small, purple dots where the bloom meets the central cone. Two orange anthers are visible in the center of the cone while the other reproductive organs are interior to the cone.

    The first wildflower I've come across on . It's the same species an the one I found first about this time last year, liverwort (Hepatica americana or Anemone hepatica seems likely). I don't know if it has opened yet or not but I'm gonna head back today to take a look.

    Pied-billed grebe in ST Morrison Park in Coralville, Iowa.

    Haven't seen a non-mallard/Canada goose waterbird in the pond B4 but I'm sure there's probably been some. Luckily I encountered one once & when this one dived I was like, "That ain't no duck". Stalked it the next day for an hour or so & was finally able to sneak up on it while it dove.

    No others. It just hung out w/ the geese/ducks. Such a cutie!

    The wonderful thing about birding is that you're constantly learning new info about different species. For example, I didn't realize that female red-bellied woodpeckers don't have red on the top of their heads. As far as I know this may be the first photograph I've taken of a female. Before I looked it up, I assumed it was a molting male or perhaps an unfortunate sufferer of male pattern baldness 😉.

    I'm just starting to see flowering fruit trees with a single bloom or two popping but the red maples have been blooming for a few weeks now. I've one out my window that looked like a flowering crab apple from a distance because the red maple blooms were so vivid.

    Came a across a large flock of cedar waxwings feasting on last year's crab apples the other morning. I find photos of cedar waxwings difficult to edit and it's hard to do these gorgeous birds justice with a photo. I was fortunate to have had plenty of opportunities that morning and took (way too) many photos. I'll post more as I'm able to slog through them all.

    I did the staring at the water thing several times but not as long as you did. But now I know how tiny they could be so maybe I'll have better luck next time. The big issue I run into is that if I approach the area they are singing in they give me the silent treatment and so I have no idea where they may be, lol.

    I'm not good at waiting either. Pretty much always chasing what might be ahead. But there is one location I visit where I always hear them so I'm gonna follow your advice and wait for them to start singing again after I approach👍 .
