Step 1: Dig big hole in rocks, sand, and clay.

Step 2: Sit on chair wishing had cool beverage but at least done digging forsaken hole.

Step 3: Realize nobody is coming to plant rhododendron.

Step 4: Pull rhododendron from big planter and realize hole is enormous compared to root ball.

Step 5: Mix new soil with less crappy parts of soil just removed from hole.

Step 6: Plant in semi-filled hole.

Step 7: Oops, no pictures of hole. Take pictures of plant.

Step 8: Cool beverage.

@sollat The rhododendron thanks you. Extra wide planting holes are an act of service. , .

The soil still needs to warm up but I’ve sown two beds of carrots and spring onions.

The idea of the hessian is to see if it makes a difference keeping the moisture in the bed while waiting for the carrots to germinate. One bed is covered, one bed uncovered.

Three beds on an allotment plot with wood chip paths. The central bed is covered with hessian and weighed down with upturned plant pots and bricks. The beds either side are topped with home made compost.
