Tandem reflections. This pair of Great Egrets persisted in following a visitor from the south, a juvenile Roseate Spoonbill, around the marsh last July, despite its frequent calls telling them to back off.


Two Great Egrets (large, lanky, long-necked herons with black legs, and pointed yellow bills) standing at the edge of dark marsh foliage in water and vegetation, both facing right with their wings raised to a vertical position, their reflections visible in the dark water. They are standing on either side of a juvenile Roseate Spoonbill (wading bird with pale pink feathers and a large, flat spoon-shaped bill) that is behind vegetation and bent over foraging, so it is just a tiny pop of pink in the center.

    Do you remember "white-wall" tires? I wonder did anybody really think that was a good look. Can you still buy white wall tires? I don't recall if I ever had white-wall tires on any of my cars back in the day. With my cars though, if I did it was probably just one of the four tires and probably a retread. What I thought looked good, on a souped-up, car was just black tires, chrome rims and baby moon hubcaps. I couldn't afford those though, but almost always had hub caps - usually three. Evidently, some cars still come with hubcaps; I got curious and checked. Sooo ... we can still look forward to seeing that stray hubcap laying by itself along the road.

    This is a photograph of some white flowers of a southern dewberry plant. "Imagine reaching out and touching the leaves of a plant. They’re slightly rough, with a texture similar to fine sandpaper. The leaves are shaped like elongated hearts, with serrated edges that feel like tiny saw-teeth under your fingertips. Now, imagine a flower. It’s delicate and has five petals, each one as soft as the finest silk. The petals form a perfect circle, like a miniature sun. In the center of this sun, there’s a cluster of tiny stamens, each one like a miniature thread with a tiny bead at the end. This is a Southern Dewberry plant. It’s a hardy plant that thrives in the wild, its white flowers contrasting beautifully with its dark green leaves. The flowers eventually give way to berries, which start off as green, then turn red, and finally become a deep, glossy black when fully ripe. The berries are edible and have a sweet-tart flavor.     Managed to find a spot with a clear view of one of the males singing so grabbed a video.

    A male yellow-headed blackbird, his distinctive yellow head glowing in the setting sun, perches on a bent reed and calls out to the others in the same lake. He makes various sounds from high pitched chirps to rough yells.

    I've been using the 2024 spring migration map on Hummingbird Central to check out when I should get the feeders ready.

    No, of course not. But, some day I'll take a picture and it'll make it all worth it. Here's to me, photography, and my new camera.

    A female northern cardinal sits on an old fence post. It's a small, mostly grey bird with a hint of red on its chest and a red crest on its head. Its beek is short, pointy, and pink. The sun is shining from off-camera to the right and is very low in the sky. Out-of-focus shrubbery populate the background, giving the shadows a softer look.
