Along a canal in Florida a tiny Sandhill Crane chick explores with its attentive parents. Surprisingly its parents let it approach rather closely. I kept it at a distance becaue I was not comfortable with this little one being that interested in humans. What a joy to watch and photograph though. Zoom in to see the detail.

A collage made out of four work in progress stages of my acrylic painting, from pencil sketch to finished painting. Robin in the green is an acrylic painting in contemporary square format hand-painted by the artist Karen Kaspar. A European Robin sits on a branch and looks to the left. The background is abstractly painted in different shades of light green. The orange-red breast feathers of the songbird stand out against the green. The robin is a welcome visitor to my garden and always inspires me to create new paintings.

The rabbit has raised its right rear foot to touch its down-turned muzzle giving the impression that it is smelling its rear foot. Cotton-tail rabbits have brown fur with white mottling and a white, cotton-ball-like tail. Cottontails have typical rodent features (large, whiskered muzzles, large eyes, larger back feet, etc.) with the exception of their ears which are proportionally larger/longer than other rodents.

    Blue-Wing feed by diving and nibbling along the bottom of the water for vegetation and small insects and mollusks.
    In this , one teal has its head underwater, feeding. The other has just finished and is swimming on the water’s surface at the Merritt Island National Refuge.

    I mentioned this past week that we may have two active eagle nests this year. I've known about one nest for three years now but last year on the trail people kept telling me about another location. I finally found it👇 and plan on monitoring both this year as much as I can to be on the lookout for chicks. Typically, I see eagles around the nest when the nest is being used so this pic is a good omen👍.

The nest is made up of large branches and is wide and deep enough for the eagle to fit comfortably with plenty of room to spare. Adult eagles are typically around two and a half feet tall with a wingspread of six to seven feet. Just a guess but the nest looks as though it may be roughly four to six feet wide and four to six feet tall. Bald eagles have brown body feathers, white head and tail feathers, clear, light yellow-green eyes with large pupils, yellow-orange beaks that curve downward to a point, yellow-orange legs, and yellow-orange feet that end in sharp black talons.

    A Strix nebulosa I saw in Grand Teton National Park a few years back. Great grey owls are one of the most amazing creatures. Their ability to hover, hear prey under lots of snow, and dive up to a foot into the snow to catch prey is amazing!
