Fascism's major hallmark is fervent hypocrisy. That's how people could live within half a mile of death camps and just casually brush the ash of burnt people from their hair, then smile like they're going on a picnic as they're led into the death camps at the end of their street, then ten minutes later, after seeing actual corpses stacked like cordwood, they're vomiting and swearing they had no idea.

We can't let the uneducated masses lead us into that kind of horror again, We need to educate them of what they're advocating for and why that's so horrifically dangerous. We need to stop hedging and beating round the bush, and lay out in detail what they're actually enabling. People die when this kind of nationalistic ignorance is allowed to proliferate. We need to stop this ignorance before it kills people.

snownyte ,

The sad fact of the matter is, we are really leading ourselves into a cycle of repeated history. All that's missing is the declaration of what to do with the minority groups once a certain politcal party gets power. They've already got the dismantling of rights down. We're just waiting for the next announcement to be "THEY'LL BE ALL CARTED OFF INTO THESE ENCAMPMENT SITES! WE'RE GOING TO TURN PRISONS NOW INTO THE NEW GAS CHAMBERS! I DON'T REMEMBER A SINGLE THING OF A HOLOCAUST!"

Because you know we're now dealing with generations that have people who're actively trying to whitewash that entire bit of history away or going to lengths to try and make it not as big of a deal as it really was.

The moral isn’t “don’t be a hypocrite”

The moral is: be sexy and good looking

madcaesar ,

Hate and anger will make you ugly on the inside and outside.

suction ,

I think the point is that the inner ugliness influences the appearance

nifty ,
@nifty@lemmy.world avatar

Who is sexy and good looking in any of this?

Emmie , (edited )

Lemme rephrase: if you have enough charisma you can pull off anything and no one will notice

The essence of politics isn’t to not be a hypocrite but to look good being one.

It turns out true times and times again when after elections the ‘more moral side’ does the same thing as what they said is evil but makes it look like a good thing.

It isn’t unreasonable to assume such skill also comes handy in day to day life. Look good, be sexy, get rewards. Spoils. Loot. Benefits.

To swim in the sea of shit you need to have some buoy.

I’m quite serious in that I think the right to vote should be removed from most of these people.

FrostyTheDoo ,

Unfortunately that's not the correct solution. When we start taking away citizens' rights to participate in their public democratic government, we no longer have a public democratic government. Down the line, you would lose your right to vote as well, for a reason that you think is bullshit. And it would be bullshit, just like it's bullshit to suggest removing voting rights from Trump supporters.

maculata ,

Yeah ok. I’m talking out my ass.
But then how DO we tackle the brutal misinformation situation that has fueled these chucklefucks?

FrostyTheDoo ,

That's the trillion dollar question man, and I honestly don't know the answer.

My approach is to try be a rational voice that people in my circle feel comfortable talking to about anything, and telling them honestly and assertively when they're not making sense or when they're spouting harmful rhetoric (sort of what I did in my first reply to you here). It is exhausting and demoralizing, but I have found that when given the opportunity, people do trust their friends and family more than the random angry Russian people in their phone.

We have to engage with these people and try to help them, because they are going to vote and raise children in our country either way.

AngryCommieKender ,

Jury duty seemed to work for juror #2. Whomever they were, they were following Trump on Truth social, and they still voted to convict. Mandatory jury duty for all!

maculata ,

You sound like the lovely calm person I wish I was when I’m not spouting rage against the RW and China, on Lemmy.

FrostyTheDoo ,

I won't pretend to be as calm and rational as I'm presenting myself in this thread, all of the time. But I do try, and when I fail I try to learn something from it

maculata ,

Oh hey, failing to learn from mistakes is my favourite hobby!

InternetUser2012 ,

Make laws to make the news neutral and factual would be a great start. Remove the russian and china troll/bot farms from the online platforms. Remove religion from politics. The real difference maker would be to focus more on real education.

maculata ,

Personally I’d like remove governments of Russia and China altogether.

InternetUser2012 ,

The world would be a better place

ThatWeirdGuy1001 ,
@ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world avatar

By increasing funding to public education systems, debunking any misinformation that's put out, holding news sources like fox accountable for lying to millions of people on a daily basis, stop using kid gloves whenever republican congressmen break the law, follow the money trail and expose the oligarchs running our country from the shadows through bribes and lobbying, never be a single issue voter, and always participate in local elections.

The sad reality of our world is stupid, greedy, evil pieces of shit will put in all the effort they can to get what they want. Good people tend to be apathetic and then get fucked hard when the bad people get their way. Good people need to pull the rocks out of their asses and get a fuckin move on.

jaybone ,

But removing voting rights and ending democracy is exactly what the right wants to do.

This is almost like a version of tolerance of intolerance that we see on the left sometimes.

FrostyTheDoo ,

I'm not tolerating intolerance. I'm saying stripping voting rights from people is not the right answer. I'm really not sure how you got that twisted...it seems that you agree that removing voting rights and ending democracy would be a bad thing. Yet you're advocating for it anyway? Can you explain that position a bit more clearly?

In my opinion you should spend your political capital and energy on influencing others to vote for candidates you support, rather than spending it advocating for the end of democratic voting in America.

jaybone ,

I’m not agreeing or disagreeing. I’m making an observation.

The right has the right to vote. They want to vote to elect Trump. Trump wants to be a dictator and end democratic elections, removing everyone’s right to vote.

I will agree that education is key. Having an informed and educated society is the only way to have a working democracy. But the right also wants to eliminate education, so that’s a problem.

ironhydroxide ,

Nah, go the other way.
Make voting a requirement. You vote, or you don't participate in society.

Liz ,

Among other things, yeah, we really should make voting mandatory.

ironhydroxide ,

Yes. we. should.

The only reason to restrict voting is to keep "undesirables" from having a say in government.

In a fair government everyone should be represented. The only way to even approach that is to make it a requirement that everyone votes.

positiveWHAT ,

Maybe include an update to proportional election systems so that you can have more than two parties/better representation?

ironhydroxide ,

Definitely not a bad idea. But we gotta start somewhere.

InternetUser2012 ,

The right thinks anyone democrat shouldn't have the right to vote. The lunatic I worked with thought that, and was going on about you shouldn't be able to vote unless you understand what you're voting for.... How ironic.

cron , in MAGA then vs now.

They advocate for 'law and order' until it impacts someone from their own circle.

Malgas ,

The core conservative belief is that there are two groups: those the law protects but does not bind, and those the law binds but does not protect. Everything else flows from there.

positiveWHAT ,

One of the cornerstones of evil. It's funny how they keep yapping about Animal farm and 1984 when the books keep reflecting their own behavior. 'Newspeak' and ‘Some animals are more equal than others’.

A lot of them probably are, but thwre are still a lot of deluded "true believers" who will actually vote.

Let's not get complacent and lull people into not voting against the orange turd.

KevonLooney ,

That's the benefit of trump seeing actual punishment for his crimes. His supporters won't vote for Biden, but they might feel dejected and stay home without voting. That's what trump supporters and Russian trolls are trying to do with Gaza.

madcaesar ,

jaybone ,

I don't think they do, but I see a lot of liberals accuse communists of being secret MAGA for not supporting genocide, escalating the trade war with China, brutalizing protesters, locking migrants in cages, etc when it's Biden doing it.

Thanks for providing an example.

Is it hard to believe someone might actually feel that things that were bad when Trump did them remain bad when Biden does them? Except for the genocide, that will be bad when Trump does it.

Ah you clearly know my conservative friend, Brian. His Facebook posts state he still wants to lock her/him up but was rather upset his lord and savior was now a convicted felon. Logic was never his strong suit, but he’s part of the friend group of mostly liberals and knows to keep his mouth mostly shut when it with us.

Juvyn00b ,

I run around with a group and when the guilty verdict was rendered, oh my - the amount that started digging in surprised me. It's a group that typically doesn't delve into it and I saw that as a big plus. Now I'm not so sure what to think other than just keep my mouth shut.

It's crazy to think how bad he was and he was great compared to tRump.

someguy3 ,

I remember reading an article (must have been during the Obama years) saying that for the GOP to get its act together they had to recognize what a trainwreck Bush Junior was. Yeah...

makyo ,

Yep and then they realized that the voting bloc they had assembled was in no way interested in any kind of redemption for the GOP or the Bush years.

phdepressed ,

I mean McCain and Romney both did fairly well with their base. What the Rs realized and Ds have yet to realize is that pandering to the center doesn't help. You have to go farther right(R-facisn) or left(D-socialism) to get people actually wanting to vote for you.

InternetUser2012 ,

I think they did realize it. They also realized they're getting old and the younger generations aren't buying into the "trickle down" bullshit because they can't buy a house if they wanted to. Gone are the days of the man working at a factory and supporting a family with a house and two new cars. I think the current GOP is going for broke, they know if they don't win now, they are absolutely fucked. The more boomers die off, the more boomers go into nursing homes, the more fucked it all gets. The planet is in deep shit, they know it, they don't care because they'll be long gone before it effects them. Younger people and even older are beginning to realize that religion is a sham, and that too hurts the GOP. This is pretty much it for them with what they've been working on since Reagan. My hope is the brainwashed suckers snap out of it and we can actually get some republicans in office that will work with the democrats and start working on making lives better for everyone, not just the rich as fuck.

someguy3 ,

The Chicago school of economics runs deep.

PrettyFlyForAFatGuy ,

I remember a linkin park song on the minutes to midnight album about this. I'm sure that wasn't even close to the beginning tho
