How arrogant of those American governers to assume they changed dictate how other countries deal with people smuggling weapons into their country (even if those people claim to have done it as a casual accident).

kent_eh ,

Presumably books that describe themselves as fiction is part of the criteria.

Being promoted as fact while clearly not being is disqualified

kent_eh ,

I am constantly baffled how refusing to futute-proof the company meets the definition of "fiduciary responsibility".

"Let's spike today's profits by destroying tomorrow's profits" doesn't seem very responsible to me.

kent_eh ,

I'm seeing several of these as campaign slogans from some American politicians.

kent_eh ,

To me, the first 3 do look the same.

But I have a diagnosis that explains it.

kent_eh ,

Gaza should not be nuked.

I'll even be so bold as to say nobody should be nuked.

kent_eh ,

Unable or unwilling?

kent_eh ,

They had intense disagreements about how to build the country, and no single design or designer had enough influence to get exactly what he wanted.

The difference is they were willing to give-and-take to eventually come to a mutually tolerable compromise solution.

Contrast that with today's "if you are from the other party, I will thwart you even if it is a good idea"

kent_eh ,

Oh goodie, you did the bare minimum and voted.

Have you involved yourself in actually improving the process?

kent_eh ,

giving Netanyahu the 26 Billion in bombs

An American tradition of blindly supporting Israel since 1947

kent_eh ,

Ask her what she thinks about immigrants and minorities.

The guy she wants to work for has called them "animals", so...

kent_eh ,

They've been indiscriminately killing Palestinians long before October.

And during that very long time, Eisenhower, Johnson, Ford, Nixon, Regan, Clinton, both Bushes, Carter, Obama, Trump and until recently Biden didn’t stop selling Israel weapons.

And now Biden has started to cut them off.

kent_eh ,

What do I think?

It's fiction.

Don't read too much into it.

kent_eh ,

I'm most shocked that this was ever allowed in any trial.

There are a lot of pretty obvious situations where you wouldn't want the accused or their "associates" to be able to identify a juror (or their family or anyone they might be connected with).

kent_eh ,

It becomes more crazy looking the more he tries to connect everything he is suspicious of into some grand interlinked conspiracy with some grand unified masterplan.

kent_eh ,

Israeli citizens do, however have some valid problems with how they're treated by the Islamic nations

Largely as a reaction to the previous actions of the government of Israel towards Muslims.

Most of the citizen-to-citizen issues (in both directions) stem back to decades of government-to-government mistreatment and abuse. All the way back to the creation of Isreal and resulting displacement of Arab/Muslim people who were already there.

And, actually, it ultimately goes back centuries before that, but 1947 was a signifigant increase in hostility and mistrust.

kent_eh ,

That's the one I typically use. Didn't even know (or care) it had an official place in scarf tying culture.

kent_eh ,

Did you try the Back To The Future double tie?

kent_eh ,

Another factor is the increasing focus on work from home, and remote learning.

The less "forced" in-person interaction you have with a wide range of people, the less practice you get in developing the social skills that would be useful in navigating relationships later in life.

Axios: Biden told Netanyahu U.S. won't support an Israeli counterattack on Iran ( www.axios.com )

"I told Prime Minister Netanyahu that Israel demonstrated a remarkable capacity to defend against and defeat even unprecedented attacks — sending a clear message to its foes that they cannot effectively threaten the security of Israel," Biden said.

kent_eh ,

What "stupid prizes" did Israel win?

All their neighbors trying to kill them?

Biden vows G7 response, ‘ironclad’ US support for Israel after Iran attacks ( www.aljazeera.com )

US President Joe Biden has condemned Iranian attacks on military facilities in Israel, pledging a coordinated Group of Seven (G7) diplomatic response while highlighting the United States’s help in taking down “nearly all” of the attacking drones and missiles....

kent_eh ,

The US has been tied to Israel since its founding.

No matter who (or what party) was in the white house, the US would be propping up Isreal after the Hamas attack.

Just like it has done for decades.

kent_eh ,

Worried about the increasing instability that they fucking created with their sociopathic levels of wealth seeking.

kent_eh ,

I say the continuing existence of the Catholic church is a grave threat to human dignity.

kent_eh ,

the actual "issue" here does seem to just be that the US isn't able to compete with China in these fields anymore.

That'll happen when you outsource all your manufacturing for a few decades in the pursuit of quick profits for wall street.

kent_eh ,

Of course, that's a political problem not a scientific one.

kent_eh ,

Fuck off with the tipping bullshit already.

Pay your damn staff properly and stop trying to guilt your customers into subsidizing your cheapness.

kent_eh ,

One of the reasons I am on Lemmy is to get away from all the bullshit Reddit drama and infighting...

kent_eh ,

this thing started because two oblasts didn't want to be part of Ukraine anymore.

Bullshit.

kent_eh ,

Save the world? We can't even convince much of the population to slow down fucking up the world.

kent_eh ,

What it means for me is that I'll have to listen to even more dumb whining about "trudope bad" from my inlaws while I enjoy my rebate.

kent_eh ,

Updates forced at inconvenient (or inapropriate) times aren't a good thing though.

Don't interrupt my work right bloody now.

You can update later when I'm done doing what I'm in the middle of.

‘IRL Fakes:’ Where People Pay for AI-Generated Porn of Normal People ( www.404media.co )

A Telegram user who advertises their services on Twitter will create an AI-generated pornographic image of anyone in the world for as little as $10 if users send them pictures of that person. Like many other Telegram communities and users producing nonconsensual AI-generated sexual images, this user creates fake nude images of...

kent_eh ,

People have been Photoshopping this kind of thing since before there was Photoshop. Why "AI" being involved matters is beyond me

Because now it's faster, can be generated in bulk and requires no skill from the person doing it.

kent_eh ,

HP printers?

kent_eh ,

The farming equipment exemption smells like John Deere's lobbies have been involved.

Do you have some kind of subconscious awareness of interests you already have or know you eventually will take deep dives into at some point in life?

I mean like awareness that, just under the surface, there are deep explorations waiting for the right time and place to emerge; things you've set aside or placed on the back burner but will tackle eventually/many you already have tackled....

kent_eh ,

Maybe circuit board design.

I've hand etched a few basic boards in the past, but I'd like to do a few "properly" using some CAD tool and have them professionally fabbed.

So far each time I've tried, I have failed to wrap my brain around the CAD workflow and after a few weeks I give up in frustration and move on to something different.

kent_eh ,

The schematics are no problem for me, I've been drawing those by hand since the '80s.

It's the steps between that and generating the Gerbers that mess up my mind.

kent_eh ,

Thank you. I'll keep that advice in mind when I get brave enough to try again.

kent_eh ,

Devices and tools are intentionally designed to be less reparable,

That is a big part of it.

Device/tool repair is typically not taught in schools, and from my perspective seems far less likely to be taught at home than it was in previous generations.

But it is taught online, with a lot of very detailed, very specific tutorials.

You can find step-by-step repair guides for almost everything on youtube. Sites like Ifixit or Repairclinic or Truatedrepair have tons of very detailed guides as well.

.

I think a big part of the problem is that people simply don't have the mindset of fixing things.

How many times do you see comments like "you spent all this time fixing that, but you could have just bought a new one at Walmart in 20 minutes ".

kent_eh , (edited )

a far cry from the situation today.

Until the late '90s, almost everything Radio Shack sold came with a schematic included in the user manual.

Today, everything is glued together with no non-destructive way to even open it.

Google will start showing AI-powered search results to users who didn't opt in ( www.engadget.com )

If you're in the US, you might see a new shaded section at the top of your Google Search results with a summary answering your inquiry, along with links for more information. That section, generated by Google's generative AI technology, used to appear only if you've opted into the Search Generative Experience(SGE) in the Search...

Just because it was trained on a huge wealth of knowledge doesn't mean that it was trained on correct knowledge.

Which makes its correct answers and it's confidently wrong answers look as plausible as each other. One needs to apply real intelligence to determine which to trust, makikg the AI tool mostly useless.

Redditors Vent and Complain When People Mock Their "AI Art" ( futurism.com )

Setting aside the usual arguments on the anti- and pro-AI art debate and the nature of creativity itself, perhaps the negative reaction that the Redditor encountered is part of a sea change in opinion among many people that think corporate AI platforms are exploitive and extractive in nature because their datasets rely on...

kent_eh ,

My complaint about AI here, if we will set the enormous scale of theft to one side, is simply that it is being used to create art that doesn't mean anything, which is inimical to the pursuit of art itself.

Thank you.

The meaninglessness and soulelessness is a big part of the problem with AI art.

It has no more "point of view" than a random number generator.

kent_eh ,

and they asked Google to be involved to give them identifying information after

If it was a court order, then it's much more than simply "asking them to be involved".

It's literally a legal order requiring them to comply or face legal consequences.

I don't see Google being the ones we should be the most angry at in this scenario. They were obeying a court order.

kent_eh ,

Seems Meta wants a long positive session.

I'm sure their advertisers prefer to be associated with positive activities more than negative ones.

kent_eh ,

not eligible to participate and still got the emails.

Same.

kent_eh ,

And no mention of him approaching the RNC; that's odd.

Didn't the judge specify that funds couldn't come from political party or campaign funds?

Or was that a different one of the cases he has been found guilty in?

What are Some Good, Recent, and Available Dumb Cars?

I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla. She's been my trusty steed for the last 14 years and is in good working order. I recognize she won't last forever, and if, god forbid (mostly for her) I get in an accident, I will need to get a new car. So what dumb cars do you drive, and what would you replace them with?

kent_eh ,

Honestly? Consider grabbing another Corolla if you liked your Corolla

Agreed. My 2020 corolla has very little of the digital bells and whistles that are increasingly getting in the way of things "just working" in the driving experience.

Still, more than I'd like, but much less than any other vehicle I've driven in the last 10 years.

And, as far as I can tell, it doesn't have any way of "phoning home" to tell the corporate overlords if I'm doing something they don't approve of.

kent_eh ,

In 2024 there have been more "mass shooting events" in the US than there have been days in 2024.

One that happened 7 years ago isn't top of mind for most people.

kent_eh ,

That's a challenge.

The job I do didn't exist when I was in high school, and most of the technology it was built on didn't exist until the early 1900s.

I suppose I could just call myself a general repairman and leave it at that.
