It's a coping mechanism if anything I guess, thinking we could do something to mitigate or at least delay the crisis.

The best carbon emission bang for buck would be making cities cyclable and walkable. The best long term carbon reduction investments per lifetime $ are by replacing car and flight intensive travel with rail, highspeed rail and bus transit, reducing our reliance on oil. Imagine if these "carbon offset" scams were instead grants to building dense, affordable housing units.

Even if humanity dies a horrible death due to our insatiable need to consume, it is better for our collective conscious to say we died trying to fix it rather than deny it completely, even if such distinction is futile or practically insignificant in the long run.

Workers at three Station hotel-casinos ― Red Rock, Boulder Station and Palace Station ― voted 627 to 534 against joining the Culinary Workers Union in 2019. But the board, which referees private-sector labor disputes, found that the company broke the law several times by making threats, punishing union supporters and promising new benefits so that employees would reject the union.

This is great and the first news I heard of the Cemex decision taking affect. Now employers will think twice before doing anything it takes including illegal stuff to coerce a "No" vote.

Yeah I think the philosophy of Linux is to not assume what you are going to be use it for. Why should Linux know where your priorities are better than you?

Some people want to run their rustc, ffmpeg or whatever intensive program and don't mind getting a coffee while that happens, or it's running on a non-user facing server anyway, to ensure that the process happens as soon as technically possible. Mind you that your case is not an "average usecase" either, not everyone is a developer that does compilation tasks.

So you've got a point that the defaults could be improved for the desktop software developer user or somehow made more easily configurable. As suggested downthread, try the nice command, an optimized scheduler or kernel, or pick a distribution equipped with that kind of kernel by default. The beauty of Linux is that there are many ways to solve a problem, and with varying levels of effort you can get things to pretty much exactly where you want them, rather than some crowdpleasing default.

Rentlar ,

Even with a server, you'd still want the UI to have priority. God knows when you do have to remote in, it's because you gotta fix something, and odds are the server is gonna be misbehavin' already.

That's a fair point.

I still contend that regularly using processes that hog every available cpu cycle it can get its hands on was not a common enough desktop use case that warranted changing the defaults. It should be up to the user to configure to their needs. That said, a toggle switch like the hidden windows setting you described would be nice.

That's right, a good campaign strategy I think would be to tout his accomplishments such as taking antitrust seriously, a major investment in public infrastructure and instituting a minimum corporate tax level, but under a veil of irony such as through a "Dark Brandon" character so that Democrat business interests don't get upset.

Rentlar ,

The government knows where you live and where you go pretty much all the time when you're in a car. That includes your lifted pickup truck and your minivan covered top to bottom with words.

All yous conspiracy nuts out there, let's advocate for better bike and passenger train infrastructure and walkable cities, to make it harder for governments to know where you are and track what you do, thanks.

Rentlar ,

There is a record of you being the owner of a 1986 Fiero. Nobody needs to know the make, colour and serial number of your bike unless you register it in a system to ensure it's not stolen.

US and Canadian Intercity trains have upped security since 9/11 like everything so there is more tracking than before. You can still buy tickets with cash at least. Denser cities make it easier to blend in the crowds.

And yeah my last car had no always connected tech bullshit, and if you live in a remote area then of course, mass-transit isn't for you. Rural folks do also advocate for better city planning because it helps keep suburbanites out. Extreme cold and heat (beyond +/- 40 deg C) makes it hard but most winters and summers it can work

Rentlar ,

You can be tracked with facial recognition, etc. but not in the same way or with the ease of a car as demonstrated in the article so I think that my point is relevant to the article. Sure some states ban or don't have traffic cameras, but in Ohio specifically, we see that a better intercity transit system could be better for privacy.

I already mentioned that sure, mass transit doesn't work as well in rural and remote areas. Clarifying my point on that: planning cities for more density, more walkability and car free travel is good for country people outside of those cities, because it keeps the suburbs from sprawling out into the countryside. These exurbs take up what could have been useful farmland with people who are just LARPing country life and spend 4 hours every day travelling to and from their job that was in the city anyway.

Rentlar ,

You're right. I was hoping conspiracy nuts wouldn't be looking for the obvious solution.

The Curious Case Of The Underselling Arena Tours ( www.stereogum.com )

“Who can afford to go to multiple shows?” says the anonymous tour manager. “Two tickets to a show, you’re talking probably about $200 with fees and everything. You go to a meal around the show, you’re talking at least $100 or $200 for a nice dinner. Then you got parking and babysitters, then you add the VIP stuff to...

Rentlar ,

It's a vicious cycle. More groups are skimming artists' revenues off the top. So ticket prices rise. Then customer's demand more glitzy superficial features to justify the value. That adds cost and raises prices more. Rinse and repeat.

In my experience, the existing lemmy servers really started taking off from the dozens of active users that were there into the hundreds, with each day after May 31 having exponential growth. By the time Lemmy.world started around June 17, we were into the thousands. This was a huge change many of the users and admins weren't expecting, and the servers were barely ready for.

Is it because the ideas of what a liberal and conservative is have shifted way to the right on the political spectrum in the last 25 years?

Rentlar ,

That's why the ad just refers to him as Convicted Felon rather than mention his name. The idea is to associate the words felon and criminal with his face.

Rentlar ,

I think this is a good thing. If all the different requirements are too much for a billion dollar company to handle, they should split into 50x 20 million dollar companies that can tailor to each state's privacy needs.

During the pandemic after Win 7 went out of support Jan 2020, I changed the harddrive to an SSD, and installed KDE Neon on a laptop from around 2014. At the time it was an Ubuntu 18.04 based distro with a KDE frontend.

All I had to do was put Chess, Go apps, shortcuts to use common sites, put two web browsers (Chromium and Firefox) to separate my parents' browsing and it was ready to go.

For the most part after I showed them how to use it they had no issues. I had to show them how to print, and scan things, transfer files from their phone (honestly doing it by email was less complicated). The computer had an icon in the tray that told them to update every once in a while (and the sudo password is 1234, they wouldn't know how to even mess things up using the GUI only).

The slightly annoying issued that cropped up now and then was keeping the browser up to date to ensure that video sites didn't nag my parents for the computer being out of date. Chromium eventually stopped seeming to work at some point.

Fast forward to today, only my mom uses it because my dad got a separate, faster laptop, cuz idk, they got tired of sharing. The laptop's still humming along and quite responsive. Since Bionic Beaver has been end of support for a year now, I have to go back over and upgrade it to 1 or 2 LTS versions up. I hope this doesn't introduce new lag or break my mom's workflows which are 90% just web browsing.

Rentlar ,

Yes I know, I have played with the options. I just wanted to set something up and get two different icons for them with nothing shared and installing two browsers seemed like the easiest way at the time.

Very interesting because the bills will be different sizes similar to other countries currencies. Before they were all fairly fat sized bills.

Honestly it can be worked around, I know places have stickers that read "does not accept new 500 yen". They can have change machines 両替機 or a counter person that can give out old 1000 yen bills from 5000 yen etc or a token.

Media

There is a new functionality for users to list all images they have previously uploaded, and delete them if desired. It also allows admins to view and delete images hosted on the local instance.

When uploading a new avatar or banner, the old one is automatically deleted.

Instance admins should also checkout lemmy-thumbnail-cleaner which can delete thumbnails for old posts, and free significant amounts of storage.

This is great news, and addresses what was until now a big shortcoming... a user had no way of managing uploaded images and admins had to crawl through the DB to manage or delete them.

Biden Administration Tightens Mileage Standards to Buoy E.V.s | The new rule requires automakers to achieve an average of 65 miles per gallon across all models by 2031. ( www.nytimes.com )

We (Canadians) use L/100km more often.

A hybrid sedan might get 3 to 4 L/100km in ideal Canadian conditions using a lot more of the battery, closer to 5 in winter.

Your normal sedan ranges from 5 to 8. (40MPG = 7 L/100km)

An SUV ranges from 8 to 13. (25MPG = 10.9L/100km)

A pick up truck will be from 9 to 16 L/100km. (20MPG = 13.9L/100km)

Do you have English, French and Undetermined selected in your language settings (on desktop, control+left click each)? It's a frequent issue users encounter just from unclear wording that makes content seem to "disappear".

If it's not that, then some screenshots could help find the source of the issue.
