This made me realize that Canadian political parties stick to their conventional colours more than US ones do. Republicans, like Trump, are conventionally red - Democrats are blue. But Trump's election signs do seem to have blue background in most cases based on a quick internet search. Could you imagine a Conservative, Liberal, or NDP sign in Canada not being blue, red, or orange respectively lol?

Rentlar ,

Well Americans like the Dutch flag colours so it makes sense. It would be a bit boring if every Canadian party had Red and White colours only.

streetfestival ,
@streetfestival@lemmy.ca avatar

I wonder if there's a place with many more parties, like 6 or more, and they all riff on the same 3 colours :P

ramjambamalam ,

Canada has green (Green Party), Orange (New Democrat Party), purple (People's Party), Blue (Conservative Party) and Red (Liberal Party) among others.

PhlubbaDubba ,

Blame NBC, apparently they're the ones who set the trend of blue dems and red reps

https://inews.co.uk/us-election-2020/republicans-red-democrats-blue-what-colour-us-election-results-map-explained-747786:

According to Professor David Scott Kastan of Yale University, writing in The Conversation, the system’s origins lie in the spread of colour TV in the late 1960s, when colour-coded maps were first used on election TV broadcasts.

The red and blue colouring was a nod to the British system, The Verge reports, but initially there was no permanent colour association for either party.

TV networks changed the map coding from election to election, with Prof Kastan explaining: “In Cold War America, networks couldn’t consistently identify one party as “red” – the color of communists and, in particular, the Soviet Union – without being accused of bias.”

Though red and blue have often been used to stand in for opposing sides in U.S. political history, it's only since the 2000 election that red and blue have been assigned to the political parties consistently.

That year, The New York Times and USA Today published full-color electoral maps for the first time, and according to The Verge, they assigned the colors fairly arbitrarily.

"[R]ed begins with r, Republican begins with r," senior graphics editor Archie Tse told The Verge. "It was a more natural association."

CanadianCorhen , in Gold for House?

I mean, this is like saying "$10,000,000 would buy you a house in 1910, and $10,000,000 would buy you a house in 2023"

It would take a lot more gold to buy you a house in 2023 than it would have in 1923

Anticorp ,

The price of gold has kept up with inflation. Same amount of gold required in both periods.

EmpathicVagrant ,

Yet house prices have not. The price of housing, let alone homes, has outpaced inflation and wages not too gradually for half a century now.

MrCookieRespect , in Gold for House?

For anyone wondering, the current gold price is:

59.790,42 EUR/kg or 64.898,53 USD/kg

So this post is fact checked. You can buy a good house for 648.985,30 USD.

bahbah23 ,

How much was it worth in 1920? I'm struggling to find that info online...

ILikeBoobies ,

https://nma.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/historic_gold_prices_1833_pres.pdf

1kg = 32.1507 troy ounces

So ten kilo of gold in 1920 would be worth $6648.76 with the average home being around $6300

Of note and why the above comparison is meaningless

A two-tiered pricing system was created in 1968, and the market price for gold has been free to fluctuate

German anti fascists don’t fuck around for obvious reasons

tryptaminev ,

Unfortunately there is very little dedicated antifascists left. And they have been villified and persecuted by mainstream politics and society since forever. The "center" of German politics was deeply apathic and subconsciously racist (which it still is very much is).

We are just at the beginning and it is entirely unclear, if this starts to make a change.

Pretty sure they’re called “The Dixie Chicks” and not just “The Chicks”, though maybe that’s a fan name or something. Should still give the full name for those who maybe never heard of them.

They dropped the Dixie part in 2020, out of respect for BLM and to remove themselves from association with the Confederacy

targeting military targets across the Gaza Strip to dismantle the Hamas terrorist organisation.

I also feel sorry for these people to have terrorist military cells in their buildings.

Does anyone calls, sends messages or leaflets to Israeli citizens (including non-jews) before attacking them? No, because THEY are the target.

Hamas has maybe a few million dollars worth of weapons and military hardware and some dumb rockets they aim in the general direction of Israel ... they're also capable of launching a minor military invasion that can kill 1,200 Israelis ... compared to Israel which has nuclear weapons, the support of the world's largest military, the support of the world's military corporations and billions of dollars of funding support that lead to the deaths of 17,000 people (and counting).

Israel can spend a few decades steadily terrorizing Palestinians by penning them up in an open prison and limiting their resources and killing them on a regular basis .... about 3,000 Palestinians over the past 15 years ... compared to 200 Israelis in the same time period.

This is like saying someone took revenge for the killing of their sister ... by slaughtering the family of the murderer, his neighbours, and a few extended family members as retaliation.

There are bad actors on both sides ... a third party should step in to cease hostilities ... negotiate everything and stop the death and killing. This isn't medieval Europe ... the world can figure out how to resolve a modern dispute no matter how complicated, deadly or difficult it is ... it's just a matter of convincing world leaders to stand up, take responsibility, hold everyone accountable and do something to resolve all this.

Continued bombing, shooting, killing and indiscriminate violence will not resolve anything and will only make the situation worse for everyone on all sides.

speaker_hat OP ,

Hamas has maybe a few million dollars worth of weapons and military hardware

This is false. Hamas has an annual budget of around $1 billion (€938 million) to govern the Gaza Strip and run its military arm. Source: https://www.euronews.com/business/2023/11/02/sanctions-on-hamas-secret-investment-portfolio-unlikely-to-have-major-impact-on-groups-fun

and some dumb rockets they aim in the general direction of Israel

So because the rockets are dumb, this is fine to aim in the general Israel direction? well, no.

minor military invasion that can kill 1,200 Israelis

By latest count, the attacks by Hamas—the Arabic acronym for the Islamic Resistance Movement—killed more than 1,300 Israelis and third-country nationals, including at least 29 Americans, in a country whose population is less than 10 million. In America, that would be equivalent to killing nearly 40,000—13 times more than the number of Al Qaeda victims on 9/11. Minor, well, no. penning them up in an open prison

I hope that you will be able to lead your people on the path of democracy and maintenance of law and order, until the establishment of an independent and democratic Palestinian state. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon who withdraw IDF from Gaza Strip. Source: https://www.gov.il/en/departments/news/speech080205

There are bad actors on both sides … a third party should step in to cease hostilities … negotiate everything and stop the death and killing.

Now, I agree. However, 3rd party negotiation doesn't work, because this is what was done until today, and as you can see, it's not resolved.

Continued bombing, shooting, killing and indiscriminate violence will not resolve anything and will only make the situation worse for everyone on all sides.

I also agree, however, unfortunately bombing shooting and killing is the way terrorist organizations (i.e. Hamas) operates. And, unfortunately terrorism can be only treated by force (e.g. ISIS, al-Qaida, and hopefully Hamas).

The problem is that Hamas terrorists are necessarily Palestinians, but Palestinians are not necessarily terrorists.

rigatti ,
@rigatti@lemmy.world avatar

They're not in any room, because they don't actually exist.

speaker_hat OP ,

This is false.

There are a lot of people who are afraid to say they support Hamas, because they know that this is something to be ashamed of, and might be illegal in their area.

And according to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamas (reduced for TL;DR):

  • Allies
    • State allies:
      • Afghanistan
      • Algeria
      • Iran
      • Qatar
      • Syria (until 2011, again since 2022)
      • Turkey (partly)
      • Venezuela
    • Non-state allies:
      • Hezbollah
      • Islamic Jihad
