I need help with a playlist.

I’m putting together one called Meow Mix, and it’s just songs about cats (but not from Cats).

I’ve got stuff like
Delilah, Queen
Sheila, Morphine
Lucifer Sam, Pink Floyd
Tommy the Cat, Primus
Maceo, Jane’s Addiction

But I need a few more. But not ones that say cat but mean women.

@robindlaws Brits use the word "catapult" to refer to what we would call a slingshot, so it's not clickbait it's just intercontinental language confusion — or, as George Bernard Shaw would put it, "two countries separated by the same language."

The decisions and policy that have the most profound impacts on the greatest number of human lives often aren't the ones talked about most often in political discourse.

What is the biggest difference between life in this era and say... European feudalism?

I would argue it's near universal literacy. And along with simply having access to the written word, the highest percentage of a population armed with some scraps of what you might call a "liberal arts education"

The ability to self-teach.

pooserville ,
@pooserville@dice.camp avatar

@futurebird It’s worth reiterating that the “liber” in “liberal arts” means “free” — as in this is the knowledge needed to participate in society as a free person.

how did americans end up with such stunted moral philosophy?

i guess maybe it's not just americans per se we just open our mouths and make complete fools of ourselves more often.

pooserville ,
@pooserville@dice.camp avatar

@quinn My short answer is: Slavery. In order to justify holding other human beings as property, we decided that 1) the appropriate way to read the Bible was to select individual verses and ignore broader themes and 2) believing the right things was all-important and actually doing the right thing was at best irrelevant and at worst a distraction from the important work of believing. And the result is a moral philosophy unworthy of humans.

    @mneme @LeviKornelsen Is the Cycle controlling events or is the Cycle a prophesy that ends up being self-fulfilling because of the elites' view of things? For instance, when Adron's coup failed was that inevitable because the Cycle called for a reborn Phoenix? Or was the "reborn Phoenix" how people justified the fact that the Cycle had failed to move even though a Dragon had replaced the previous Emperor? Maybe the Cycle is the opiate of the masses....

    The thing Trump did in Dayton – celebrating his fascist movement's dubious "martyrs"–is exactly what Goebbels & Hitler did bw Nazis' failed coup & their seizure of power. Their song was called the Horst Wessel Song.

    Nazis were obsessive abt being the victims. Once in power they put up monuments to their "martyrs." They sang their Horst Wessel Song as they conquered countries & killed millions to say that they, Nazis, were real victims and therefore always innocent.

    An idea from my life for your game:
    I once lived in an old Victorian house that was converted into apartments. One day, I looked up at the house from outside & noticed a window on the corner where my bathroom had a blank wall. I checked it out. The bathroom at the end of the hall was 5 feet shorter than the hall. Behind a set of shelves at the end of the hall, I found a door with the knob removed so the shelf would sit flush against it. There was a secret corner room!

    Thinking about these imperial naval bases out here at the far end of the spinward main (yes, a jump 1 could go to Regina from here).

    These are imperial client states, which mostly means they agree to let the navy have a presence in exchange for the protection that adds. Also little imperial embassies in most systems.

    I’m thinking a cruiser squadron each for Hollis and Duì, and a battleship squadron at Xùn. All older models. And of course scouts everywhere.

    @deinol Depends how dangerous the area is, but I'd go for a single heavy squadron at Xùn and a few patrol cruisers at the other two and figure the squadron cruises around showing the flag.

    pooserville ,
    @pooserville@dice.camp avatar

    @deinol Probably a cruiser squadron with a battleship as the flagship, something too old for frontline duty but still enough to remind the client states that changing their pro-Imperial policies might have... repercussions.

    And then maybe a half-squadron of patrol cruisers on anti-piracy patrols.
    Xùn as the home port for the heavy squadron but regularly calling on Hollis and Duì, moving back and forth at Jump 1 unless they have reason to move fast.

    pooserville ,
    @pooserville@dice.camp avatar

    @deinol Honestly, I'm a big fan of the late David Drake's RCN series for a variety of reasons, but not least because the protagonists regularly find themselves operating within their client states, opposing client states, and neutral backwaters and their adventures have given me a ton of ideas for Traveller adventures. (Way more than I hope to need, since I'm only running CT until one player's health recovers enough to finish our D&D campaign. Currently hoping he'll be back in action by May.)

    pooserville ,
    @pooserville@dice.camp avatar

    @deinol Whatever makes sense for your campaign. For myself, I'm currently running with the 3 LBBs, so a light cruiser is in the 4-600 dton range, heavy cruiser around 12-1600 dtons, and a battleship in the 3-5000 range. But once you bring in High Guard those numbers all need to increase by a factor of 3-10....

    pooserville ,
    @pooserville@dice.camp avatar

    @deinol I feel like 1200 tons to 20,000 tons is a huge jump from heavy cruiser to battleship. If you look at the WW2 US Navy, the USS Wisconsin was 58k tons and the Quincy (heavy cruiser) was 14k tons. If you keep that ratio a modern battleship might be in the 6-7k range, and an obsolete one a little smaller.

    But every Traveller universe is (or ought to be) a little different, so do what fits your concept!
