Writer, migrant, surprisingly nice in person. Old queer. I would rather be blocked than tone policed. More meme literate than I should be at this age. I mainly shitpost, then sometimes make you cry.

Hey there, big moment for me. I'm (softly for now) launching a new publication. It's a zine about the future. Find it here: https://cassandrazine.com/
You can also follow the Cassandra mastodon account here: https://social.yoyodyne-it.eu/@CassandraZine

Since people seem to be pissed off at me today about private messages for some reason, now is as good a time as any to repost my blog on how to test Faraday containers, which also, inexplicably, seems to infuriate a small set of people.

@mattblaze At least the crazy locksmiths bring whiskey, ime. next time we're in the same town i'll buy a round and toast the wonders of social media 😂

@mattblaze i don't have many locksmiths, but the ones i have are suuuper sweet. 😬

In case you wonder where EU projects money goes into, assume it is administrative overhead. And storage capacity is mainly copies of the same documents they asked over and over again.

With stamps.

It is definitely unrelated to anything I'm doing right now.

@rafi0t @whvholst Brazil was a documentary.

Young people are waking up every day to media about war, genocides, dead children. They are unsure of being able to make a living, scared by debt, violence, addiction, homelessness. They are unsure if the burning planet will even support their lives. They are struggling for secure basic housing after having their lives upended by a pandemic...

meanwhile the NYT:

I really am thinking these days that the best historical parallel for our current moment is the 16th century in Europe, and boy, it that a rough place to be.

I'm incredibly happy to see that Nabiha Syed has taken over as director of the Mozilla Foundation. I think this is the first real ray of hope I've had for the future of the open web in... Idk, like a decade? We worked together while she was at BuzzFeed, and it's been a genuine delight to stay in touch since. I look forward to seeing where she takes Mozilla, and to a future with much less bullshit in it.

Doing things productively is really difficult when it feels like i wake up every other day with a new medical emergency.

quinn OP ,
@quinn@social.circl.lu avatar

Make that every day, today was dizzyness, and nausea/vomiting that hit if I tried to lay down. I'm holding some food down but my limbs feel like paper maché.

quinn OP ,
@quinn@social.circl.lu avatar

Today in medical nightmares my doctor told me to eat meat. Because of my anemia. In the esprit de l'escalier, I didn't manage to tell her that it was probably having periods with 2x, 3x, sometimes even 4x the normal menstrual blood loss rather than vegetarianism.

quinn OP ,
@quinn@social.circl.lu avatar

She also gravely told me if this next treatment doesn't work (the last one took most of a week out of my life) that I'll have to go to the hospital for a transfusion. "Please can we just do that," I said. Because it would solve my problem and put me on the road to recovery. But no. Now we're doing another iron treatment I might tolerate but I don't see exactly why this one won't make me sick. She pointedly told me it's for children.

Ok, lady. Whatever.

quinn OP ,
@quinn@social.circl.lu avatar

@dymaxion probably because i don't have a dx'd blood disease. "heavy periods" isn't normally a reason, and i get that, but at some point i just need some damn blood in my body again. (I'm actually right at the French transfusion threshhold, annoying. I wish I could say just this once to get me back on track please) But no, I need to get worse before they'll treat.

quinn , to random
@quinn@social.circl.lu avatar

It's kind of amazing after doing the absolute most extractive colonialism around the world, slave trading and genocides and ruination of land and societies just looted into the isles, the Brits have managed to squander everything so much in the last 70ish years that they've turned themselves into a backwards, increasingly poor nation. They've thrown the richest empire the world has ever known away to become a broke rump nation on the edge of Europe, with literal shit in the water supply.

For the record: Yes, I sometime do discretionary travel by air. That's not ideal for the environment, I know that. On the other hand, I also have never owned a car, I walk or take public transit to work, and I have a solar system at home.

@mattblaze There was a point where I couldn't afford a place to live in the Bay Area where my child was, but I could afford to fly around all the time and stay with different people, because that was more manageable than rent, and how I could remain part of my child's life. How badly does society have to fuck up for that to be the best option?

I am genuinely confused why American insurance companies don't leverage medical tourism more. Like, "we'll cover everything if you just go to this country and get it done there" would save them heaps of cash and buy them goodwill.

Open Source is fascinating. Imagine a pastry chef who spends all day making pastries at work going home to make pastries in the evening. Imagine them wandering around giving these pastries to others for free. Imagine them finding out their free pastries are a huge part of a local company’s lunch offering. Imagine the company complaining because the chef doesn’t make enough pastries for them. Imagine the chef staying up all night making them more pasties instead of just telling them to fuck off.

quinn ,

@puercomal wrote a wonderful revisit of the law I accidentally made in https://monkeynoodle.org/2024/01/20/nortons-law/ very nicely explained. The examples of Ea-Nasir and Gilgamesh are absolutely lovely.

The main thing I'd add, and I should revisit this, is that it's and expression of not too complex information theory/physics in our current data landscape: information, in all its glorious forms, requires energy, and if it doesn't get it, it is subject to entropy. If is is energized, that's usually copying.

I really hate the 'it's immoral to stay on twitter' stuff. Many people have spent their lives in hostile infrastructure. That didn't start with Musk and it won't end when he's gone. Most black people in America have to pay their taxes to governments run by white supremacists, women have to pay the people who take away their rights. It sucks, but if someone's support network lives on hostile ground and yours doesn't maybe think on that before you judge.
