Most supposed centrists are small-c conservatives; things are working well for them, and they're comfortable; they'd like a little progress, but, you know, as a treat.

Conservative political parties have largely long been reactionary, and many are trending (some deeply) fascistic.

We all know this, right? This is obvious in my circles, I think?

With minecraft mod now documented and posted in starter state, it is time to do the refine/expand cycle until the spirit of blocky obsession leaves me and I go back to usual projects.

The question now being "What kind of weird crap to pile in?"

I am always interested in what's part of someone's personal Star Wars canon - the works they personally consider a core playlist, which win the mental argument of what's "rightest" automatically in their head if there's a contradiction.

But!

I do not give the smallest shit about what anyone thinks the central "official canon" is; that is a deeply fucking boring way to try and power move the speaker's favourites to the top.

This makes fan discussions tricky.

If I see someone posting about their windows woes, there is a chance (somewhere around 1 in 4ish) that I will then post a "Everyone should try Linux" thing (which is true).

I will, however, do this on my own fucking timeline, because I have just enough self-control and awareness not to be That Guy.

Please, join me, in not being That Guy,

Baseline Star Wars is Laser Wizard Nonsense, and always has been, and that's great! It that's not actually your speed, or not anymore... I mean, you can watch selectively; some of the off-baseline stuff is really different.

But trying to claim that Laser Wizard Nonsense is NOT the baseline just makes you look silly.

LeviKornelsen OP ,
@LeviKornelsen@dice.camp avatar

@Xenograg - I submit to you that Laser Wizard Nonsense is a specific subgenre-or-sibling of Space Opera (much like Planetary Romance).

Listen, if I was obscenely rich, I would not only rig an absurd and horrible contest that people would need to play to get my money after my death, but I would get it started before I died, so I could watch them play.

LeviKornelsen OP ,

@conductor - Oh, that probably comes first; there's very few ways to get the obscene wealth without becoming a corrupt creep.

@Xenograg - (Said smoke bowls would also naturally appear in heist planning, and "wizard cases the joint" would be something theft targets might take measures against, not just academies...)

Minecraft mod: Actual working components are ready for a 1.0 release (there's tinkering and expanding to do, but there will ALWAYS be more of that to do, until I am exhausted of it).

I just need to document it well enough for users to get into it and arrive at the fun.

...Uggggggggghhhhhhhh, documenting....

Since it got a big mention, I wanted to say a thing about Manyfold that I think is important.

Manyfold is, I think, an extremely clean and helpful tool for analysis and troubleshooting, but utterly cold to initial design.

An appealing design is carried by it's light ease, fevered creative heat, smooth marketing, or some similar factor.

Technical sweetness and maximised function follows appeal.

I can help you with your bottle, but not with your lightning.

My Minecraft mod of witchy stuff has achieved the level of depth where I need to make a list or table to explain the feature differences between magic brooms.

(Mangrove broom go fast over water! Acacia broom is landspeeder! Oak and birch are major fliers; Oak flies better, but Birch recharges in water, for treks that include ocean).

This is probably overkill. I like that about it.

LeviKornelsen OP ,
@LeviKornelsen@dice.camp avatar

@pteryx - Checks spruce and jungle broom features, doesn't favour them all that much.

Well, they WILL, by this time tomorrow....

My current favourite is the Warped Wood one:

All brooms "fly" by making huge jumps with gliding and slow fall, and midair double-triple jumps, etc; they have a maximum charge for jumping.

The warped broom has no maximum on midair jumps; instead, it siphons an XP level from you for each jump. It's deeply bad most of the time, but there ARE situations....

The problem with getting a properly moral leader at the helm of a nation-state whose entrenched interests are rapaciously imperialistic, hegemonic, and exploitative, is that the job is contrary to their character.

You can sometimes get a reformer in love with an invented idea of that nation-state, soon to be embittered and aged by the reality. But even that's a long shot.

Anywaaaay.

@thebrand - Given that I most often hear this from people who are extremely proud of their particular other bent (theatrical or segments of OSR thinking in the region of "combat is a failure state"), the term "legalistic" seems a bit forced, though I won't argue the rest.

As someone who uses "folks" a lot because I grew up in a hick Alberta village of 600 people (named "Mannville", no less), I love the fact it's been widely adopted as inclusive language.

Not least because that usage would've irritated a notable chunk of said hick village back in the day.

I don't always think about ancient Rome, but when I do, I think about how chariot racing was vastly more popular than gladiators, to the point that mobs wearing the colour of their preferred stables had riotous brawls, politicians were heavily involved, and more.

Roman sports hooligans were chariot fans.

Consider:

Stinking hairy man-creatures with only a patch of pale skin around their bright eyes, dressed in layers of filthy rags with a few furs crudely lashed on - untrustworthy, often spiteful, but offering and trading in marvels.

I'm just saying; early colonial traders as monster-men works way better than the "savages" they traded with.

Urban Fantasy Concept:

  1. Ritual behaviour is how you talk to your unconscious, and the more personal, the better.

  2. Psi-like abilities are controlled primarily at the unconscious level.

  3. The art of magic is the design of psychologically-personal religions.

  4. Psychics half-believe batshit stuff, know perfectly well that it's batshit, will stab you for trying to explain it's wrong.

Got proper plaster for moldmaking yesterday and started in on printing off a batch of new masters for the chess-type dudes (with arms on).

Spent my free time today pouring new molds; still need to cure, dry, and get the edges finished, but that's for tomorrow.

Thursday or Friday, I should be testing glazes on pieces out of the old molds, and starting pouring in the new molds.

Been picking my way through this project for about three years now, but satisfyingly finished bits are now in sight!

Awen (with cards) live playtest went extremely well. Nailed every design objective I had.

Some parts sing perfectly, while others are merely functional,and a couple things got skipped intuitively with no damage done (and will therefore be dropped for the next iteration).

And, with feedback, I now have a whole list of ways to make the dry parts engaging and the fun parts notably better.

Big win.

  • Bottom row is standard chess: Pawn, Reeve/Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen, King.

Well, I now have an odd new phone - the Teracube 2e. Which got my attention because it's inexpensive, works with the e/os easy installer, and has a headphone jack. Also it's got some long-lifespan environmental cred and a replaceable battery (!), which is cool.

I put in e/os with the launcher, aaaand: 45 minutes, dead simple.

And now, the attempt to get all my main needs without ever connecting to Google (the option to do so is there if I can't, but I'm going to try not to).

LeviKornelsen OP ,
@LeviKornelsen@dice.camp avatar

@chgowiz - The likes are as expected: long battery life, no bloat anywhere (meaning it runs fast and lean), and the actual physical device is pleasant in terms of size, weight, headphone jack, etc etc.

Dislikes: Camera is just bad, looking at changing phone cases provided way less options than usual, and I had to re-enable some of their built-in-but-not-really software (and then disable it again) when they did a major update, to keep the three-button navigation I like.

LeviKornelsen OP ,
@LeviKornelsen@dice.camp avatar

@chgowiz - There's an official forum for the OS, and people who work on it post there? It feels like a hybrid of a usual open-source community and a business.
