Totally agree with @PavelASamsonov UX Design research isn’t about producing/writing output “persona” document. It’s about designing, setting up & running your experiment to prove/disprove human behavior hypothesis.
This would be like a chemist not bothering with the laboratory experiment or Pharma not bothering with clinical trials & letting LLM come up with words, cos cheaper & unethical as hell!
> "No, AI user research is not “better than nothing” — it’s much worse"

kellogh ,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@futurebird @dahukanna @PavelASamsonov why? because that’s not exactly what they’re doing. as you scale up model size, new capabilities emerge, things they weren’t trained to do. “emergent behavior” isn’t a theory, it’s an observation. the open question is, what other sorts of capabilities will emerge when we scale further up. will they acquire an element of surprise? idk, i’d say no but i’ve also been wrong so far about what their limits should be

kellogh ,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@futurebird @dahukanna @PavelASamsonov hmmm… 🤔 most applications of LLMs don’t simply use the model alone. it’s typically a mixture of the trained model + banks of knowledge + input from the user. i’ve definitely built LLM apps that interview SMEs and then turn around and use that as a bank of knowledge in another app

Altogether, the exercise reinforced my previous opinion: LLMs are terrible writers, but decent editorial rubber ducks.

@molly0xfff yeah, i’m always confused when people assert that the primary use for LLMs is writing, imo it’s their worst use. then again, i like writing, so idk, maybe i’m biased

Just read this article by Molly White @molly0xfff a well reasoned and articulated thought piece on LLMs, potential use cases but perhaps most importantly arguments against their use (and alleged usefulness).

AI isn't useless. But is it worth it?

https://www.citationneeded.news/ai-isnt-useless/

> AI can be kind of useful, but I'm not sure that a "kind of useful" tool justifies the harm.

kellogh ,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@nopatience @molly0xfff i don’t personally find it well reasoned, it skips over some pretty glaring upsides — non-english speakers enabled to apply for jobs or navigate government bureaucracy to keep their homes or healthcare, learning new skills, getting fast feedback on ideas, … whereas she really only mentioned a non-benefit: SEO optimization

kellogh ,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@molly0xfff @nopatience eh, that bleeds together with the next sentence, making it seem like people are purely just using it for reading & writing emails. realistically there’s lots of people using it for applying to jobs, navigating health insurance, navigating housing programs, etc. i don’t think you did it justice

futurebird , to random

I've largely dismissed the strain of AI alarmism based on the notion the a computer will be so smart that the danger it poses to humanity is outsmarting us.

There are real dangers in AI, most of them relate to people using these technologies in improper ways due to having a poor understanding of what they really are... and most important the exploitation & degradation of the human body of knowledge creativity represented by publicly available digital information. 1/

kellogh ,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@futurebird i also tend not to believe it, but i’m skeptical of myself because 100% of the top AI experts believe in the scenario where AI becomes that intelligent

idk, we’ve been talking about anti-science regarding climate change, are we doing the same thing with AI?

@futurebird every single one of the deep learning “pillars”, the experts that are working on AI — Hinton, LaCunn, Ng, Bengio, etc.

Trump sleeping in the trial makes a lot of sense when you consider how unpleasant it is to hear things you just don't like, even if they are true... like the jury he might have been convinced to some degree of his own guilt if he paid too much attention. Some deep part of his mind that protects his ego over all things allowed him to simply fall unconscious so as not to hear or see things that might upset the fiction of his own self image.

Mirrors are not always pleasant things for some of us.

(Curious how well the relation between oz and metric is generally known.)

kellogh ,

@futurebird my rule of thumb is that a liter is about the same as a quart. a nalgene bottle has quart and liter markings at the top, almost the same. so 8oz is ~1/4 of a liter

    Politicians and political commentators whine about young people not buying homes and starting families (not getting married) and then do NOTHING to help the young people (who do exist) who would love to do one or more of these things but can't because it's too damn expensive.

    Build housing and coops where young people want to live. Protect their jobs with unions. Make health care not an issue.

    Do not make some marriages impossible because you don't like the genders.

    My current radical take that is driving the principal insane is the idea that to better educate our students about social media, online safety etc. we should have them set up and run their own social media on the school intranet.

    And I get why. But, why do we just throw young people out into the wilds of the internet where they are surrounded by ads, creepy people, criminals etc.?

    The Attack Turkey

    this morning on the run i got to the top of the hill and was resting, bc i'm out of shape, and off in the distance i see a bird trotting my way

    as it gets closer i realize it's a turkey. it had a big red gobbler and its neck was iridescent. It was actually really pretty, so i just watched as it approached

    kellogh OP ,
    @kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

    it kept coming straight at me, eventually it was like 2-3 feet from me and my feeling shifted from awe to nervousness. i don't think turkeys are aggressive, but i also don't want to physically learn about a new aspect of nature today either, so i bolted

    to my surprise, and anxiety, the bird chased after me. i sprinted across the hill, down and up a gully. It was still following me, but getting further behind, so i walked a bit, but it caught up, so i ran.

    kellogh OP ,
    @kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

    Eventually, it came to the long downhill and i lost it for good because, as out of shape as i am, i can still run faster than a turkey downhill

    unfortunately, i still had to come back. and it was waiting for me at the top of the hill. i picked up a long stick and kept it at a distance as i walked around it. as i sprinted downhill toward the creek, it followed me, but i think i lost it after the creek

    kellogh OP ,
    @kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

    part of me wonders if the owners of the new development at the top of the hill got a turkey to defend its land from intruders, my trail does thread some Posted signs. but that's crazy, right??

    kellogh OP ,
    @kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

    i’ve seen plenty of apex predators on the trail. bald eagles, black bears, moose, also rattlesnakes and copperheads. never have i been so scared as with that turkey. i can still feel the sudden shift from awe to terror as it got a bit too close.

    kellogh OP ,
    @kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

    after i got home, i looked it up and yes, turkeys can indeed be aggressive, especially around breeding time (i got news for you, Mr Turkey, i’m not your competition)

    if it happens again tomorrow, i think the answer is to be more overtly aggressive. so maybe i need to yell and chase it rather than just defensively tip toe around it. idk

    kellogh OP ,
    @kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

    TURKEY UPDATE

    yesterday i went running again, same place. said turkey was WAITING FOR ME at the bottom of the hill.

    i'm like "f this" and turned to run away but it followed me, again.

    i started yelling at it with my best Will Ramos #metal screams but it did not flinch

    i picked up a stick and swung hard it close to it's head, hoping that would scare it off. it was not scared off.

    kellogh OP ,
    @kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

    @futurebird tbh they don’t seem to run that fast, so maybe turkey trot is a great way to get in shape, or at least motivation to run faster than a 15 min mile. 🤔 new business idea
