The young bald eagle we've been watching in the park woods seemed about ready to fledge today--e was perched far out on these branches calling out piteously. When eir parent came back to the nest e got so excited and kept flapping eir wings and bouncing on eoe bough before getting back to the nest in two big jumps. (Terrible light in this photo, but the moment was too sweet not to share.)

A sort of washed out photo taken of a juvenile hawk clinging to a pine bough against a hot, almost-storming sky. The light is weird (and its correction in the photo mishandled), but thanks to it we can get a good look at the young bald eagle, who is standing, leaned over his shaggy pantaloons and strong yellow claws, with eir huge, brown wings lifted and spread to show off the long "fingertips" as e readies emself to jump from the branch back into the nest, hidden in the dense shag of needles on the left-hand side of the photo. Eir sharp, curved yellow bill is open plaintively.
