I think maybe the rich folks just don't think about their staff or employees as people, or they think they're out to get them.

I work manufacturing adjacent and see a lot of this attitude from the management layer. They think they own people and that every dollar they give them, every break, every word not out of necessity is the worker pulling one over on them.

It's a sad othering, like they're not raking in money with these people. It's like they think the money is coming no matter what, and every wasted moment is direct theft in opposition to them.

Colonialism was super popular, so a couple of dudes with machine guns could mow down a field of natives with much less risk.

Plus a machine gun is much more impressive than some dudes with single fire guns. A platoon (or whatever fits on a boat or three) can be overrun. Throw a couple of machine guns in with a couple of brutal shows of force and you got yourself a colony.

WW1 was still a ways off and it wasn't really the target market for your Gatlings and Maxims.

China has been pretty well known for bringing in their own workers on foreign construction projects. They're unapologetically nation building. I could easily see them continue to do so with manufacturing.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out a majority of US cars are manufactured with Chinese parts. The US is absolutely not nation building. The rust belt has been exported and nobody really wants to bring it back.

Though, to be clear, El Salvador had a super horrific gang problem. The gangs were wildly murdering boatloads of people.

I don't know that the west could really sanction or tax China. It'd take a lot of time and money to start manufacturing again.

At least in the states I couldn't really see it as feasible. It's trade routes and infrastructure to start with.

We are pretty dependent. They don't even really buy our weapons. I don't know that we have enough to bargain with.

No political entity could withstand the backlash of no more cheap Chinese manufacturing.

Like one third of the US doesn't even bother to vote. The banks own all our land and houses so there's be no economic gain. There's plenty of reason for everyone to be upset, but not really enough reason to go to war.
