Still testing #matrix having the account on matrix.org. Found out that I have no messages history older than May 10 for some reason 🤦♂️
Did I missed something?
I looked into Matrix back in 2020 on a far more superficial level. Back then I simply wanted to know whether non-technical users can rely on Matrix for encrypted chats without shooting themselves in the foot.
What I found was a huge mess. The different Matrix clients all had very different capabilities, also when it came to encryption. It was pretty much a matter of luck whether your Matrix client could establish an encrypted connection to another Matrix client, whether it would do so by default and whether it would notify you in a useful way if it failed to encrypt the connection. Even the official Riot messenger didn’t perform well. There clearly were no baseline requirements, and expecting users to recognize whether they are secure or not just doesn’t work.
I later got a reply from the developers. I can only quote approximately since that was on Twitter so the conversation is lost now. It essentially boiled down to the fact that reliable encryption was never a design goal of the protocol. They wanted to give client developers the most flexibility. So client developers took that and largely implemented only the easy parts.
@dansup I can't see why it can't be a telegram group with topics and hashtags , so why not federated #telegram ( it #Matrix) where op actually controls their content
About the modding, yes there re admins , who can create topics , privileges can be voted in or out
#Followerpower. Die Überarbeitung der Messenger-Matrix ist nun vollständig abgeschlossen. Über einen Tipp/Klick auf Teilen würde ich mich riesig freuen, damit sich die Messenger-Übersicht (weiter) verbreitet. ❤️ 👍
> Half a century ago, a philosopher imagined a world where we could fulfil our desires through an 'experience machine' like the Matrix. He argued we'd prefer reality, but was he right?
We absolutely need an alternative to Twitter, but Threads, Instagram, and Facebook all being down at the same time shows how dangerous it is to consolidate all social media under a single corporation, and people need to stop encouraging it.
GNOME, KDE, various corners of BSD, Mozilla, Thunderbird, FSFE, Nextcloud, OSM, Eclipse Foundation, AI Verify Foundation, Open Source Initiative, and now Ubuntu:
I am absolutely thrilled to see more communities making a home for themselves on Matrix 🚀
We Distribute is a CC-licensed open media project. It serves as a people-focused tech publication, with the goal of informing and educating people about three things:
Decentralized Communications
User empowerment
The future of the Internet
Most of what we do involves reporting on the day-to-day developments of the #Fediverse. In fact, our articles are ActivityPub-enabled, and integrate directly into the network.
However, the Social Web / Decentralized Social movement involves far more efforts and technologies that we think are also worth reporting on: #Matrix, #XMPP, #Bluesky, #Nostr, #SecureScuttlebutt, and #Solid all bring interesting pieces to the puzzle.
Our ultimate goal is to showcase the ongoing efforts to change the shape and form of the Internet itself, at a grassroots level. Join us on this exciting journey. #WeDistribute
Exciting news! The Ubuntu Community is now on Matrix. As of today, we're now fully federated with the rest of "The Matrix"! Anyone can join the party 🎉
Did you know that you can also find the Ubuntu HPC community on Matrix? We're an active group supercomputing professionals that meet every Wednesday over Jitsi. Just look for hpc:ubuntu.com when exploring rooms.
Hope to see you there with the rest of the Ubuntu Community 😎
Similar to IRC, where I never found nice usable apps for my taste, I thought XMPP was deprecated, but that doesnt seem so?
A very easy to use phone app is #Snikket. When I force normies to reach me over XMPP, I generally suggest Snikket to them. For the desktop I like the text UI of profanity. But it is glitchy and would be hard to use for anyone who lives in the shelter of a GUI.
#Matrix is theoretically decentralized but the mere fact that the flagship instance is on #Cloudflare suggests the developers are not on the ball about privacy or digital rights. Whenever I have been asked to join a Matrix room, there was reference to that Cloudflare instance, so I refuse it.
#Signal has many problems. I won’t even consider touching it as long as supplying a mobile phone number is a registration requirement.
(btw, i did not see the youtube video so I don’t know if it covered the problems I mention)
