My terminal of choice on Mac, Warp, just got a Linux release! I don't use any of the warp ai/drive features but I do like the Launch Configurations feature and it's general workflow. Now we just need to convince them to flatpak it. 😜

Progress on the #compiler. The Z8 now passes the test suite and the build coverage test. The test suite is pretty basic so there are probably plenty of bugs left. Code density is not great on the Z8 though. Also added register keywords for arguments to the compiler and split I/D to the linker.
The bytecode output for the #1802 also works with a bytecode engine in C, but the 1802 part is a long way off. Might have to stop putting off debugging the 65C816 now and carry on with #6502

A Bitcoin investor was recently scammed out of 9 Bitcoin (worth around $490K) in a fake “Exodus wallet” desktop application for Linux, published in the Canonical Snap Store. This isn’t the first time; if nothing changes, it likely won’t be the last.

This is a rather long blog post to accompany @linuxmatters episode 23.

In a previous version of this blog I pointed the finger at a service called exchangerate-api. After some online comments and thinking about this, I have removed that section and screenshot. I drew a direct line between a scam app and a third-party legitimate service. I didn't deeply investigate what APIs were used by the scam app, so it was unfair to draw that line.

After using a service, how do you feel about being told you'll get a survey and being explicitly asked to give a "9 or 10 out of 10"? What if someone phoned you a few days later and told you this again?

popey OP ,
@popey@ubuntu.social avatar

@darkling For me, the first one was to my face! The second was a phone call. I said I'd be unlikely to be giving them 9 or 10. They asked why. I explained, "Because you're the second person to ask me to give you 9 or 10, which immediately gets my back up and makes me not want to".

One thing that always made no sense to me in the #Linux community is people recommending Ubuntu as a "beginner distro" – and also the concept of beginner distros overall.

After you install #Ubuntu, you have to install an additional settings app to make it behave as you'd expect, run a script at startup to adjust scroll speed, and likely set up EasyEffects to get your laptop speaker to sound decent... etc.

Just recommend Linux Mint. It solves so many problems out of the box.

What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

@ajsadauskas Based in a town in the UK. I can get to all except a University and Sports Arena. But I have two train stations within 15 mins which can take me to pretty much anything.

Hello friends,

There has been too much spam coming into my timeline, causing a high load on my server. It was challenging to block as it was coming in through relays rather than directly mentioning me.

In the end, I applied a script that forcibly opens and inspects SSL communication content for filtering.

This has proven effective. I hope it helps someone.
