Okay, this is possibly going to be controversial in some quarters, but it has to be said for the good of the Fediverse:
Mastodon.social is not a good way to join Mastodon. If you're already on mastodon.social, you might want to move your account to another server. I've done an article about this topic at:
Yes I agree, but I have seen one prominent member of the #fediverse and proponent of #FOSS advise against starting a self-hosted single-user instance, and I have seen a few people on Reddit say the same in the various fediverse related subreddits.
It seems weird to me too, and I wondered if it was a common opinion among more established fediverse users. Obviously I don't think you share that opinion based on your helpful guides showing people how to start their own single-user instances.
Do you remember a couple of weeks ago when I complained that a very large #python contribution to #inkscape was poorly formatted and I felt embarrassed about pushing back and asking them to run a linter over it?
Yeah I'm not fucking embarrassed now, I'm furious. 🤬
Update: Apparently they meant a small section of it was, not the whole MR. I'm annoyed, but I'll have to take them at their word.
Popular opinion seems to be that #GNOME and #KDE are "fighting/competing."
Sure we have our differences in philosophies and design, but it's way more akin to siblings having small spats. But in the end we are siblings in #FOSS family and I like GNOME folks a lot. And if anyone attacks my siblings, I'm there to defend them.
We can and we should work together as much as possible, not just GNOME or KDE but all other DE's too like #Budgie and #XFCE to be the best computing experience possible.
It's not perfect and it's never gonna be because perfection is unattainable, but perfect is also enemy of good.
#OptGreen with #GNU/#Linux to keep your device in use! These machines will run beautifully for many years to come.
Not only wallet friendly, #upcycling keeps CO2 emissions out of the atmosphere. Ca. 75% of Apple's emissions comes from production alone (details in alt text).
Fedora: “The Fedora Quality Team is joining Week of Diversity with an Accessibility Test Week!
Much like other Test Days, the goal of this week is to put Fedora through its paces and catch as many accessibility related issues as we can for our disable users.”
Me: Fedora, your screen reader is broken.
Fedora guy: Patches welcome 👍

Here's another #LibreOffice feature you might not know about! If you're looking for a feature but can't find it in the menu, go to Help ▸ Search Commands (or use the shortcut ⇧ Shift + Esc). Type a few letters and you can see where in the menu to find it! 👍 #foss#opensource#tip
WOW WOW WOW is my initial reaction to the Ditto community server
It is exactly what Nostr needs and what I had hoped atproto would have
It is even compatible with Mastodon API
--previosly nostr relays, storage and ids were complicated
--atproto lacks the ease for self hosters to build their communities compared to those on activitypub
It's been some time since Proton 9.0 released so I was wondering why I wasn't seeing any updates for wine-ge in Lutris. However, it looks like everyone has moved on to working on ULWGL (now called "umu") instead.
As someone who teaches digital art and design, I used to expose students to Adobe products because they are industry standard and often listed as job requirements. I am switching to only using free and open tools.
This is handy graphic by Twitter user @xdanielArt has many interesting options.
I hope Adobe’s hubris leads to great new software made by communities.
Hey content creators!
now is a good time to upload #adobe alternatives tutorial/walk through videos and streams.
There is going to be a lot of people googling:
how to paste in gimp.
why they can't find keyframes in DaVinci Resolve.
Or how does one even in RawTherapee. #foss
for artists* that haven't transitioned from Adobe's Creative Cloud toward FLOSS alternatives—whether because of work demands, time constraints, learning curve, etc—you can install Objective See's Lulu to block Adobe's software from reaching out to their servers, preventing them from harvesting your work and thereby exploiting you for their own gain.

to all y'all federated folk, my old #introduction was lost to the migration void so here's it reposted:
I pride myself on being a generalist maker but most of the time I'm working on art or hardware/software.
super interested in the worlds of: #photography (esp film!), #FOSS, music, privacy, digital/physical security, the agony of existing under capitalism & plants.
