#YouTube is rapidly turning into a cesspool of stock video clips, AI-generated clips, and deeply annoying synthetic voices. That's not to say good stuff isn't still there -- it is -- but it's being rapidly buried under a massive mountain of manure.
I suppose I should post something introductory now that I'm on my own instance.
I'm a Linux lady who used to work in COBOL development and assorted legacy systems management gigs.
Nowadays I make videos and occasional blog posts about Linux and vintage/retro tech. Entirely supported by viewers like you (no sponsors as of writing). Links in bio.
We're releasing today another bonus clip from behind the Patreon paywall. This originally was produced by Christina as a bonus clip to follow the early release of S5E5; supporters on Patreon at the Companion tier and higher gain access to bonus content that is either excerpted from episodes or prompted by their content every other week. Here is the original description:
"I didn't have any extra clips from the interview with the organizers of The Solarpunk Conference. Instead, here's me (Christina) reading my contribution to The Solarpunk Conference Journal that was published after last year's conference.
Enjoy!
PS- you can catch videos of many of the presentations from the conference on The Solarpunk Conference's YouTube channel (including the presentation/panel that @arielkroon was a part of)."
@randahl is fresh air and is somehow both hard hitting and fun. He’s getting established so he’s up top as someone to support first. You need a Patreon Randahl! Take the minimum fees option. https://youtu.be/Z7fsxRI7SHc
@KyivIndependent produces outstanding, best in the world reporting. No joke. See their latest. Here is an earlier one. I’ve moved off Patreon to direct funding once they could take it. https://youtu.be/Mskr4VDxgog
Denys Daydov is the nicest guy you’d ever want as a war correspondent. The best daily source. Patreon for him. https://youtu.be/VKMxugv0RGA
Reporting From Ukraine. Support on Patreon. Incredibly connected analysis. They know things. https://youtu.be/JXowjLcXBY8
Anders Puck Nielsen is a world class military analyst. When he does speak, I listen. https://youtu.be/OZ-R1WVGwQg
Ryan McBeth. This was the guy who went to YouTube at the start of the assault on #Kyiv, specifically to teach Ukrainians how to kill a tank. Outstanding! Probably had an impact on the war, not kidding, so it would behove you to listen. Check the date on this: https://youtube.com/shorts/e5UsENUts-c
Ukraine Matters. Georgie is one of those people whom you quietly realise is really smart and really plugged in. https://youtu.be/iRLeeG2JIe8
Jake Broe. Smart, clear and common sense. An amazing guy with a big heart. Decided to raise $40k for his 40th birthday. Raised $1.2million. https://youtu.be/0mKrlbZO3qU
Is it me or is Denmark 🇩🇰 really representing this #FollowFriday
The manipulation of social media by some political groups became abundantly clear when, after a solid diet of physics and mathematics videos, with occasional ducks and movie trailers thrown in, just one accidental viewing of a Daily Telegraph video showing CCTV footage of a robbery (which on the face of it would appear apolitical, but which has been hi-jacked in the comments) has videos about Reform U.K. Ltd and an extremist German political party at the top of my #YouTube recommendations.
Check out Nine Worlds on YouTube. It's a new science oriented channel by a Mom (scientist) and son (junior scientist) and they are fairly adorable together.
Picture 1: Smaller YouTubers like Jake Broe or “Reporting from Ukraine”, have been forced to blur out even mildly graphic videos like this video of damage to a building.
Picture 2: Large YouTubers like German DW can show highly graphic videos, like this one of a drone dropped grenade killing or severely wounding a Russian soldier.
I strongly believe, we need the EU and the US to regulate this, so all creators are treated equally.
#YouTube closed the account of the new Ministry of Foreign Affair of #Iran.
The YouTube account of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran was deleted after the publication of a video in English with the title "Resistance, the only option for #Palestine", under the pretext of violating YouTube policy.
I'm always pleased to see #YouTube creators who keep churning out over a period of years a series of many nicely done, long-form videos that are obviously an immense amount of work. And they continue posting these right up to the present, even though their view counts mostly never exceed 10K on any of them. (Of course, all manner of YT trash videos accumulate 100s of 1000s or millions of views.)
These creators are clearly creating for the joy of creation alone.
In a world of largely garbage media focused entirely on the eyeball counts, it's reassuring to see that some creators are still in the sunlight.
Really pissed at #Youtube today because it gives me a new layout for the main page with smaller thumbnails and more ads. The videos now show 5 columns instead of three. This is a big Fuck You to content creators (including myself). On my large monitor, I see 6 columns and some rows with two goddamn ads in them. #enshittification
from #YouTube #RashidKhalidi, the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at #Columbia gave this blistering speech about the university’s crackdown on pro-#Palestine protesters on May 1, 2024.

Students in #Cuba Stand with US Student Encampments for #Gaza
Hundreds of students gathered at the University of #Havana to condemn the police repression of US student protesters and show their support for #Palestine. On the same steps, students were repressed by the Batista dictatorship in the 1950s.
