Why does your version of climate change mitigation include intractable suffering from the poor and minorities?

rockSlayer ,

Turns out they're legit, and partner with lgbt+ organizations. Unfortunately a lot of the lists I saw for other queer friendly companies are pretty localized to microbreweries. So as usual if you want to support lgbt+ companies, look local

rockSlayer ,

Brought to you by the same people involved in the last one, it's time for Cold War 2: Electric Boogaloo

rockSlayer ,

Instead, we spend a lot of time in high school biology on hydras ... maybe that time would have been better spent on some history of plagues

I think there's a different class that might be better suited to discussing past plagues lol

On a serious note, I get what you mean. I think classes need to be more integrated on their lessons, so like the science class is discussing the mechanics of how diseases reproduce at the same time history class is covering past epidemics, while the social studies class covers how systemic injustice worsened epidemics for the poor and minorities.

rockSlayer ,

This looks amazing! I love it so much. I bet my coworkers will too

rockSlayer ,

I feel you. My ex-fiancee broke up with me on Thanksgiving while we were driving home. it will sting, but you have to accept that it happened first before anything else. You can't control others, so even though it might have come out of nowhere, you can't blame yourself entirely.

Consider and think critically about any reasons they told you to decide if it's something you need change. Think about the relationship itself and if you were content. My ex broke up with me for being unable to constantly mask my autism, seemed to feel bad for it after realizing the same thing, and then truly ended the relationship after I forgot to clean a dish 2 months later. Like yea, I definitely need to be better about remembering to do dishes, but I will never apologize for being autistic. Could you believe that I wasn't content in a relationship where my partner would get upset at me for reasons I don't understand? By the time I moved out of the apartment in March, I was already done grieving. Imo, if someone you thought you could marry breaks up suddenly and with little reason, they were too disrespectful to deserve you.

Finally, after the fallout, you need to rediscover who you are for yourself. You've likely been emotionally reliant on that person, which is ok, but now you need to sort out who you are after growing from that relationship. I've been going for long walks every day, listening to audiobooks. I've been reconnecting with college friends who I lost touch with during the relationship. I chose to treat myself with an expensive gadget. I've been leaning into my activism. You get to choose for you and yourself what to do with your free time, with no reason to coordinate with someone that may be uninterested.

I hope we preserve all our robot heroes like this when we have settlements on Mars

rockSlayer ,

No one considers the coconut anymore 😔

Hearing damage is part of the concert experience though. If you don't leave with mild tinnitus did you really even go?

rockSlayer ,

Actually I'm also the weird friend that uses hearing protection lol all my friends tell me that. I still have tinnitus and plenty of hearing damage from not doing that when I was younger though

"Dog" is a pretty decent guess, without the context I would have assumed it was an otter

If we keep heading this way, the US is going to fucking balkanize.

The fast-food industry claims the California minimum wage law is costing jobs. Its numbers are fake ( www.yahoo.com )

I don't think this is actually about needing to pay wages, I believe that the real target is the fast food worker council that was created to make these changes. I think they're going for a tried and true method to gain conservative sympathy, but Republicans are self-segregating away from California and their political influence...

I think it's kinda funny that even their more subtle attacks are blatantly obvious

rockSlayer ,

I always loved these hybrid gun designs. With modern safety features, they might almost be practical

rockSlayer ,

Unfortunately it would be critically underfunded and expected to make a profit. Also they have to have the entire funds of government pensions available for all workers in advance

rockSlayer ,

Typically TAs aren't public unless the mobilizing committee and the bargaining advisory council choose to make it public. It allows for issues to be resolved in bargaining before collective action occurs.

There's been a MASSIVE shift away from business unionism of the 70s-2010s towards direct worker democracy in the labor movement, especially in the AFL. Business unions surrender their power for short term gain. Democratic unions hold on to their power so they can win more over time.

Chiquita found liable by U.S. jury for killings by Colombian terrorists ( www.msn.com )

Chiquita Brands was ordered Monday by a Florida jury to pay $38.3 million to the families of eight people killed by a right-wing paramilitary group in Colombia, which the banana grower had funded for years during that country's violent civil war....

How do you connect with people and make friends without social media?

I'm struggling to figure out how to make friends without having Instagram or any other social media. I have discord but don't use it much. I see all my acquaintances in discord channels and sharing Instagram posts and stuff. It's already hard for me to make friends, but I feel like not having any of the traditional social media...

rockSlayer ,

I'm a firm believer in friends through building solidarity. I helped organize a union at my workplace, and became a steward. Being united in struggle has brought me closer to the people around me. If you're too nervous for that, volunteer for a local cause you care about. If there aren't any, start organizing your community.

rockSlayer ,

It's intimidating, but being united in a cause is a pretty powerful force. It brings focus to the energy everyone has and directs it collectively. I was extremely shy and not comfortable with confrontation or being approached at work. Over the course of 2.5 years of organizing and being outspoken, I still like my space but none of that is true about me now. I never knew how to just talk to people at work, but now I've gotten pretty good at talking to people I've never even met before and can get pretty comfortable with folks I'm closer to.

Everything is a process. Having focus for the purposes of being together is a very strong social lubricant. From there you might find personalities you don't like, but you're much more likely to find some friends.

It would disqualify the 2 major presidential candidates if it was applied nationally, as well as 50 sitting members of Congress (assuming they all wanted to run)

The biggest ram usage factor is going to be your browser. Beyond that, my first impression is that the browser version of lemmy is far more resource efficient since there's no ads

rockSlayer ,

Fargo is in North Dakota, not Minnesota dammit!

rockSlayer ,

So if we're oversimplifying, the reason is capitalism.

rockSlayer ,

The study doesn't count because it's hamas

rockSlayer ,

I remember an urban planner and climate scientist/communicator discussing the changes that need to be made. He pointed out in his research and the book he published based on it, that it's cheaper for governments to do climate friendly change than it is to maintain the status quo regardless of climate disasters. He says that yea it's degrowth, but it needs to be framed as efficiency to get interest

rockSlayer ,

It was called Project Drawdown. The statements about degrowth are just author comments about the research, and didn't get discussed in the study

rockSlayer ,

it only gets better if you make it better. Organize a union at your workplace

rockSlayer ,

I definitely misread the title as IKEA for a moment. Imagine if corporations helped fix the problem they helped cause.

rockSlayer ,

I hope it inspires them to document their oral traditions in some way on the Internet. Most likely it would be a blog, but video documentation would be invaluable preservation

rockSlayer ,

Capitalism operated almost exclusively as monarchies for the first 200 years. Hundreds of capitalist countries have failed, but why are only the failed communist states counted against the ideology? Vietnam, Cuba, and China certainly haven't failed. Now I don't consider those to be socialist or communist projects, but they're undeniably different from the capitalist status quo. What specifically do you mean when you say a country fails in the first place?

rockSlayer ,

I don't consider myself a tankie, because I'm an anarcho-syndicalist.

I've been called a tankie for suggesting that workers should organize tenant unions to kill the apartment bidding wars in NYC. I've been called a tankie for pointing out that their image of a tankie needs to almost have power to be any kind of threat worth warning against, and there are no tankies anywhere near power with the global rise of fascism. I've been called a tankie for asking someone to clarify what they meant by tankie. I've been told that scientific socialism both is and is not tankie behavior. The term is utterly meaningless. I've come to the conclusion that it's part of a 3rd red scare in an effort to sow division amongst the anticapitalist left.

rockSlayer ,

I hope NASA did an inspection. I'd be terrified to fly into space on Boeing

rockSlayer ,

It didn't end that quick, but he stopped after 9 months due to health concerns. The goal was to earn $1 million in a year, he had earned $62k.

rockSlayer ,

Yea, he flipped free furniture off of Facebook. Only a rich asshole would come up with an idea like that

rockSlayer ,

That doesn't change the fact that it still severely increases the difficulty to seek asylum.

rockSlayer ,

And if people's basic needs are not met through those shitty jobs and go month-to-month or worse, then it's no different than waged slavery.

rockSlayer ,

Polls are also incredibly unreliable this far out in the most unpredictable election the country has seen in recent history.

rockSlayer ,

the effect is the same, because part of the executive order doesn't allow for people that crossed the border illegally to apply for asylum at all and generally makes it more difficult to apply for asylum in the first place. Biden doesn't deserve defending when he makes the same moves as his fascist competitor.

rockSlayer ,

Netanyahu's cabinet is pissed because the far right coalition believes that there can not be peaceful living with arabs or Muslims. Ben-Gvir has stated outright that Palestinians don't deserve to live. Nearly every time a ceasefire is broken, it's by Israel. Every time the IDF "starts an investigation", it falls into the void and never gets concluded. Israel has a lot to prove.

rockSlayer ,

She's a billionaire. She's used to killing people for selfish interests.

rockSlayer , (edited )

"in Hamas custody", or killed by Israeli strikes? So far all the hostages have died from actions by Israel. The difference is extremely important in this case and the weasel word title doesn't help with giving accurate info.

Edit: it's worth pointing out that this is not OPs fault, but the fault of the news org

rockSlayer ,

What you see is a dystopian view of the direction we're headed with AI due to capitalism. What I see is another way to keep 3 bullshit jobs without being able to wfh
