The laws criminalizing abortion also effectively criminalize miscarriages because of the way they investigate things and the fact that dilation and evacuation/curettage is frequently needed for miscarriages that occur after 10 weeks or so. The conservatives in question will refuse to accept that the fetus died in utero without any intervention and prosecute women that have to have dead fetal tissue removed to prevent sepsis, save their lives, and preserve future fertility if that's what they want.

medgremlin ,

This is my plan. I have to finish medical school anyways, and once I've done that, I'll be in a better position to help other people.

medgremlin ,

I'm very curious as to why you think I'm naive in some way, and why you see yourself as so much wiser than another internet stranger.

medgremlin ,

Unless your graduate school is medical or law school. I'm taking out around $90k per year for medical school for tuition and living expenses.

How does "being able to handle yourself" apply when someone else has removed your ability to handle yourself with drugs or alcohol? How does it apply when your choices are "go along with it and try to escape later" or "fight back and probably lose because you have less muscle mass and are physically smaller than them"?

How does your argument apply when you are a teenage girl in high school being harassed by adult men? Reality is a very different place when the world perceives you as a woman (or girl), and your prescriptivist approach entirely fails to account for the fact that your perspective has a lot of blind spots in it.

medgremlin ,

Speaking as a woman who has been assaulted and harassed on multiple occasions by more than one man, I'd just interject that bears can at least be pretty predictable. If you don't bother it, it very probably won't bother you. The men who have assaulted and/or harassed me were people that (I thought) I knew and had been normal up to that point.

This is a hyperbole, and if push comes to shove, I would rather be dropped in a forest with another human... but if that human is a man that is a stranger, then I'm going to have a different kind of guard up than I would for a bear.

TL;DR: It's easier to predict animal behavior than human behavior, and the best won't lie about being a friend before attacking you.

*Downvotes from people who are thoroughly unimpressed with your narrow viewpoint and seeming inability to empathize with other people who have very different life realities than you do.

Not everyone can drive. Many households only have one car between multiple adults. Some can't afford childcare and rely on nearby relatives to help out, and would have to start paying for childcare if they moved. Some people don't have the education or job training that would allow them to get a job worth commuting to. Some people are reliant on social services or medical care that is not available otherwise. Many of the suburbs around American cities are just as expensive as the cities themselves but without walkable areas, nearby shops, or any public transportation.

This is just a handful of examples and it barely scratches the surface of the more complicated issues at hand here

Is there any medicine that can give me happy hormones and does not need a doctor's prescription?

Things are becoming more depressing every day and I can't afford for professionals and don't want to jump to the last resort or drugs. Is there a medicine that can make me happy if I take it in proper doses and does not require a doctor's prescription?

medgremlin ,

What the above commenter said is generally good advice, but I would add on limiting your social media intake. Finding an online community to interact with (with voice or video chat kinds of things involved) is a better use of online time. For the coding, you could try moving that to the morning, and socialize in the afternoon/evening, and that will help you get on a more normalized schedule. If your leisure time is spent mostly with other people, it's a lot easier to sign off and go to bed when everyone else does as well.

Edit: Also throw in a multivitamin and 2000-5000IU of Vitamin D3 because nutritional deficiencies can cause psych problems as well as exacerbate or prolong said psych problems.

Domestic abuse isn't just physical violence, it can also include manipulation, coercion, and other forms of control.

medgremlin ,

OP has said elsewhere in the thread that they knew this couple at the time and she did not have a meaningful say in the situation. She was threatened with divorce if she had gotten the vaccine. For a lot of women, their economic situations are such that a sudden divorce would likely lead to poverty and homelessness as well as loss of meaningful support for any of their children.

medgremlin ,

Then you don't have a very good understanding of what domestic abuse situations are actually like. I hope that you can expand your understanding through empathetic learning and that you don't have to learn via personal or close vicarious experience.

Let’s Thank the Alabama Supreme Court ( www.nytimes.com )

I never thought I’d be grateful to the Alabama Supreme Court for anything, but now I am. With its decision deeming frozen embryos to be children under state law, that all-Republican court has done the impossible. It has awakened the American public, finally, to the peril of the theocratic future toward which the country has...

I want them to seize the Trump tower and turn it into low-income housing and a job training/community college with whatever liquid assets they do squeeze out of him. Use the disgorgement to help the people of New York have better lives.

medgremlin ,

What do you think would be a good use for the buildings they are almost inevitably going to seize?

medgremlin ,

They could fund the community college in perpetuity if they auctioned off all his gaudy crap to his cult.

medgremlin ,

Change it to Alice Paul and we might have something going there. (But housing, job training, and education are some of the most needed things in low-income communities.)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Paul
(Of note, Alice Paul was against abortion as were many of the suffragettes as they viewed it as a form of exploitation. However, her legacy as a leader in the women's rights movement and in nonviolent protest are very important to world history as a whole. There is some debate about this, but it has been claimed that Ghandi kept correspondence with her and learned from her example of nonviolent protest.)

One of the most significant pieces missing from LLM's is the capacity for judgement and reasoning. The mark of a good physician is the one who listens to the patient to figure out which question to ask next, and to know what testing would be useful. I'm studying for boards right now, and the question stems give you the exam and history findings...in the real world, you have to get those yourself. Medical students are terrible at H&Ps because they have to go through every single question and exam by a list, and they only gain skill in paring the interview and exam down to the relevant portions with experience.

Unfortunately, they are kind of right at least in terms of this coming election. The best thing we can do is to try to get the fascists out, then come January 20th, 2025 at 12:01pm, take them all to task and demand that they make good on their promises. Protests, rallies...hell, riots even...just make them understand that they serve at our behest and make them earn their keep. But we have to get through November first.

medgremlin ,

The problem was the down-ticket candidates. There's only so much a president can do when the legislature is polluted with or outright deadlocked by a bunch of sycophantic fascist toadies. That's why I'm hoping that the RNC does blow its entire budget on Trump so that we can pack the House and Senate with candidates that aren't hell-bent on executing every whim of a bloated, washed up reality TV personality.

medgremlin ,

We watched him instigate a goddamn coup on live television. There were hundreds of millions of witnesses. Trump's innocence is not the question here...the extent of corruption of the system is what's really on trial.

I grew up in the Bay Area (Silicon Valley), and my AP US History class in 2006-2007 included Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States" and in-depth discussions of groups like the Black Panthers. Our teacher was open about being a socialist and when we talked about things like the Red Scare, he made a point to really humanize the victims of the politics of the time like the Rosenbergs.

(Edit: It is important to note that our discussions of the Rosenbergs in class pre-dated the release of the classified information regarding their actions. Our teacher's approach was to include information about who they were as people instead of the boogeymen they were presented as in the standard textbook.)

I will just straight eat peanut butter with a spoon. The peanut butter is what I really want and putting on or in something just adds that many more calories.

(I do run into problems sometimes because my cat tries to steal my peanut butter.)

medgremlin ,

Personally, I'm partial to Skippy smooth peanut butter. It's one of the things I'll always buy the brand name of.

medgremlin ,

The SAVE plan and the rules around PSLF really do make medical school a lot more viable for people like me. Doctors get paid a pittance in residency, and the interest on medical school loans would add up really fast on the old income-driven repayment plans.

medgremlin ,

Minnesotan chiming in here, I will be making cupcakes and cocktails for the occasion.

medgremlin ,

Well, I suppose you could make a boozy milkshake with cake batter ice cream or something.

There's a lot of reasons to sit at the kids' table these days.

Plotted, and executed. He just didn't succeed.

A Vermont mom called police to talk to her son about stealing. He ended up handcuffed and sedated ( apnews.com )

What happened next that evening in May 2021 is the basis for a lawsuit by the mother alleging that Burlington police used excessive force and discriminated against her unarmed son, who is Black and has behavioral and intellectual disabilities....

medgremlin ,

I see your point, but that is a bigger can of worms than I think you are expecting. There are dozens of genetic or congenital disorders that can lead to intellectual disabilities and hundreds of acquired ones; all of which result in a range of severity. Also, "intellectual disabilities" and "behavioral problems" are very large buckets of different manifestations. In order to differentiate in the way that you are asking for, they would need to report exact diagnoses and give a detailed description of the individual to differentiate them, and even then, there would need to be a lot of context and clarification if they are to avoid misinterpretation or misunderstanding of any terms or descriptions used.
